Book Synopsis Reconstructing Afghanistan by : William Maley
Download or read book Reconstructing Afghanistan written by William Maley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies some of the main lessons for civil-military interactions that can be derived from the experiences of Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan. The book has three main themes. Firstly, the volume analyses why the ways in which civil and military actors interact in theatres of operations such as Afghanistan matter — for both those categories of actors, and for the ordinary people who their interactions serve. Second, the book highlights that these interactions are invariably complex. The third theme, which arises specifically from ‘the PRT experience’ in Afghanistan, is that such teams vary significantly in their roles, resourcing, and operational environments. Consequently, to appraise the value of ‘the PRT experience’, it is necessary to unpack the experiences of different PRTs, which the use of case studies allows one to do. The volume comprises an introduction, identifying some key questions to which the PRT experience gives rise, and case studies of the experiences of the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, The Netherlands, Australia, Germany and France; chapters dealing with the roles played by NGOs and the UN system and a discussion from an Afghan perspective of the implications of civilian casualties. It is the combination of the diverse cases discussed in this book with a focus on the broad challenges of optimising civil-military interactions that makes this book distinctive. This book will be of much interest to students of the Afghan War, civil-military relations, statebuilding, Central Asian politics and IR in general.

Book Synopsis US Nation-Building in Afghanistan by : Conor Keane
Download or read book US Nation-Building in Afghanistan written by Conor Keane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the US so dramatically failed in Afghanistan since 2001? Dominant explanations have ignored the bureaucratic divisions and personality conflicts inside the US state. This book rectifies this weakness in commentary on Afghanistan by exploring the significant role of these divisions in the US’s difficulties in the country that meant the battle was virtually lost before it even began. The main objective of the book is to deepen readers understanding of the impact of bureaucratic politics on nation-building in Afghanistan, focusing primarily on the Bush Administration. It rejects the ’rational actor’ model, according to which the US functions as a coherent, monolithic agent. Instead, internal divisions within the foreign policy bureaucracy are explored, to build up a picture of the internal tensions and contradictions that bedevilled US nation-building efforts. The book also contributes to the vexed issue of whether or not the US should engage in nation-building at all, and if so under what conditions.

Book excerpt: Five refugees recount their courageous journeys to America — and the unimaginable struggles that led them to flee their homelands — in a powerful work from the author of Beyond Magenta and We Are Here to Stay. “From 1984, when I was born, until July 16, 2017, when I arrived in the United States, I never lived in a place where there was no war.” — Fraidoon An Iraqi woman who survived capture by ISIS. A Sudanese teen growing up in civil war and famine. An Afghan interpreter for the U.S. Army living under threat of a fatwa. They are among the five refugees who share their stories in award-winning author and photographer Susan Kuklin’s latest masterfully crafted narrative. The five, originally from Afghanistan, Myanmar, South Sudan, Iraq, and Burundi, give gripping first-person testimonies about what it is like to flee war, face violent threats, grow up in a refugee camp, be sold into slavery, and resettle in America. Illustrated with full-color photographs of the refugees’ new lives in Nebraska, this work is essential reading for understanding the devastating impact of war and persecution — and the power of resilience, optimism, and the will to survive. Included in the end matter are chapter notes, information on resettlement and U.S. citizenship, historical time lines of war and political strife in the refugees’ countries of origin, resources for further reading, and an index.
Book Synopsis Afghanistan Provincial Reconstruction Team Handbook by : United States United States Army
Download or read book Afghanistan Provincial Reconstruction Team Handbook written by United States United States Army and published by . This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a guide to the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Afghanistan. It contains part of the ISAF PRT Handbook as well as background information on each of the Provinces. There is also a chapter on the Tactical Conflict Assessment and Planning Framework currently used in Afghanistan. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is combating an insurgency and simultaneously rebuilding its infrastructure to become a strong sovereign state no longer requiring assistance from the U.S. government (USG) or other nations. Key to the success of this effort is the provincial reconstruction team (PRT). The U.S. Army established PRTs from a need to stabilize the operating environment by developing the infrastructure and building capacity necessary for the Afghan people to succeed in a post-conflict environment.By design, PRTs have grown into interagency and multinational teams in both organization and scope. PRTs have become an integral part of International Security Assistance Force's long-term strategy to transition the lines of security, governance, and economics to the Afghan people. As we look to the future we know the PRT effort will draw to a close and transition its efforts toward the provincial government. Until that event occurs and while it occurs it remains vital that new PRT personnel are familiar with the concepts, structure, and management of PRTs and the lessons learned and best practices established by their predecessors. This handbook focuses on Afghanistan PRTs; the information contained in this handbook comes from multiple sources inside and outside the USG with the understanding that the way PRTs operate has changed and evolved over time.

Book Synopsis Reconstructing the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces: Lessons from the U.S. Experience in Afghanistan by : Special Inspector for Afghanistan Reconstruction (U.S.)
Download or read book Reconstructing the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces: Lessons from the U.S. Experience in Afghanistan written by Special Inspector for Afghanistan Reconstruction (U.S.) and published by U.S. Independent Agencies and Commissions. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the second in a series of lessons learned reports which examine how the U.S. government and Departments of Defense, State, and Justice carried out reconstruction programs in Afghanistan. In particular, the report analyzes security sector assistance (SSA) programs to create, train and advise the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) between 2002 and 2016. This publication concludes that the effort to train the ANDSF needs to continue, and provides recommendations for the SSA programs to be improved, based on lessons learned from careful analysis of real reconstruction situations in Afghanistan. The publication states that the United States was never prepared to help create Afghan police and military forces capable of protecting that country from internal and external threats. It is the hope of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), John F. Sopko, that this publication, and other SIGAR reports will create a body of work that can help provide reasonable solutions to help United States agencies and military forces improve reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.
