Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is what the French mean by infidelity the same as what Australians mean? Or the same as the Japanese, or the Finns? Do different countries have different rules when it comes to extramarital sex? Delving into this taboo subject, Pamela Druckerman interviewed people all over the world, from retirees in South Florida to Muslim polygamists in Indonesia; from Hasidic Jews to the men who keep their mistresses in a concubine village outside Hong Kong. She talked to psychologists, sex researchers, marriage counsellors, and, most of all, cheaters and the people they've cheated on. Russian husbands and wives don't believe that beach-resort flings violate their marital vows. Japanese businessmen declare, "If you pay, it's not cheating". And South Africans may be the masters of creative accounting – pollsters there had to create separate categories for men who cheat and men who cheat only when drunk. With all this bending of the boundaries of marriage, knowing that by international standards Australians are extremely faithful may come as comforting news. Or maybe not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time Aum Shinrikyõ emerged, most Japanese assumed that they lived in one of the most well-ordered and safest societies, a model that had much to offer the chaotic Western world. This assumption was shaken on 20 March 1995 when the deadly nerve gas sarin was released on the Tokyo subway system. Since that incident, the 'Aum affair' has had widespread repercussions and shaken the Japanese psyche in a serious way. This volume provides a window onto contemporary Japanese society by considering the various reactions and responses to this crisis precipitated by this deviant religious movement.

Book excerpt: ‘An easily digestible, vividly illustrated look at Tokyo. I discovered stuff I’d never known despite living here for over thirty years.’ Rupert Miller. ‘Some amazing photographs that really open your eyes to the city’s history and what it is today.’ Lu Passidino. ‘A must read, browse or dip into for anyone visiting Tokyo for the first time or the tenth time.’ Dr. Ginny Butterfield. In this scintillating new book, the author peels away the fog that so easily obscures the world’s biggest, most baffling city. It is a piercing analysis of the place, the people, its history, and yet the picture painted is both beautiful and eloquent. The book covers much ground and yet is bang up-to-date including the fiasco of the Olympic Games. At the same time it avoids all the cliches that so many books about Tokyo fall back on. It is close to 300 pages long but also heavily illustrated with many images, most of which have never been published before. This is a history that also uses the voices of the people who lived and visited here, adding an authenticity that is beguiling. Tokyo is a baffling city but know its history and this facade can be unravelled. This is a thorough but also a personal history that meanders through a place that can confuse all comers. Read it an enjoy the journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Lovesick Japan, Mark D. West explores an official vision of love, sex, and marriage in contemporary Japan. A comprehensive body of evidence—2,700 court opinions—describes a society characterized by a presupposed absence of physical and emotional intimacy, affection, and personal connections. In compelling, poignant, and sometimes horrifying court cases, West finds that Japanese judges frequently opine on whether a person is in love, what other emotions a person is feeling, and whether those emotions are appropriate for the situation. Sometimes judges’ views about love, sex, and marriage emerge from their presentation of the facts of cases. Among the recurring elements are abortions forced by men, compensated dating, late-life divorces, termination fees to end affairs, sexless couples, Valentine’s Day heartbreak, "soapland" bath-brothels, and home-wrecking hostesses. Sometimes the judges’ analysis, decisions, and commentary are as revealing as the facts. Sex in the cases is a choice among private "normal" sex, which is male-dominated, conservative, dispassionate, or nonexistent; commercial sex, which caters to every fetish but is said to lead to rape, murder, and general social depravity; and a hybrid of the two, which commodifies private sexual relationships. Marriage is contractual; judges express the ideal of love in marriage and proclaim its importance, but virtually no one in the court cases achieves it. Love usually appears as a tragic, overwhelming emotion associated with jealousy, suffering, heartache, and death.

Book excerpt: Patricia E. Roy is the winner of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award, Canadian Historical Association. Canada's early participation in the Asia-Pacific region was hindered by "contradictory impulses" shaping its approach. For over half a century, racist restrictions curtailed immigration from Japan, even as Canadians manoeuvred for access to the fabled wealth of the Orient. Canada's relations with Japan have changed profoundly since then. In Contradictory Impulses, leading scholars draw upon the most recent archival research to examine an important bilateral relationship that has matured in fits and starts over the past century. As they makes clear, the two countries' political, economic, and diplomatic interests are now more closely aligned than ever before and wrapped up in a web of reinforcing cultural and social ties. Contradictory Impulses is a comprehensive study of the social, political, and economic interactions between Canada and Japan from the late nineteenth century until today.

Book excerpt: In Tokyo, Charlie Hillier discovers you can’t always bank on the truth. Fresh off a harrowing experience in Russia, Charlie is keen to lay low, and his latest posting to Tokyo offers him the chance to immerse himself in a truly foreign culture. Charlie is soon drawn into his first consular case when a successful young investment banker winds up in a coma following a car accident. After a man claiming to be a friend of the banker’s turns up dead, Charlie and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police inspector assigned to investigate the murder, Chikako Kobayashi, discover that trusting the banker — who emerges from his coma with amnesia — may be a dangerous decision. As Charlie tries to sift truth from deceit, he’s unsure if he’s dealing with a man whose accident has brought about a profound change for the better or a devious criminal lurking behind a convenient facade.
