Book excerpt: Ten of twenty-five stations making up the Regional Air Monitoring System (RAMS) in St. Louis were equipped with dichotomous samplers and high volume filter samplers for aerosol measurements. The dichotomous samplers were designed for automatic operation and were capable of collecting up to 36 samples in each of two size fractions before filter stacks must be changed. Sample filters were pre-weighed by beta gauging before exposure in St. Louis and subsequently returned to LBL for determination of aerosol mass in each size fraction, as well as determination by x-ray fluorescence of the concentrations of the following elements: A, Si, P, C, K, Cr, Mn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Sn, Sb, Ba, Hg, S, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, As, Se, Br, Cd, and Pb. Approximately 33,000 samples were collected between March 1975 and March 1977. The operation of the samplers in the RAMS network is described along with problems encountered and procedures used for preventive maintenance and quality control. Also described are two streaker samplers specially installed for continuous aerosol measurements and a silicon cell pyranometer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges faced by the atmospheric research community today are vast, complex, and multi-faceted. The book Urban Atmospheric Aerosols: Sources, Analysis, and Effects highlights important aspects concerning the chemical and optical properties, size distribution, sources, and potential health effects of fine urban air particles (PM2.5). The physical and chemical characterization of PM2.5, its source assignment, and the assessment of the magnitude and distribution of its emissions are crucial for establishing effective fine air particle regulations and assessing the associated risks to human health. This book brings together eight papers covering the main topics of the field and will be of interest to researchers who are interested in air quality in outdoor and indoor environments, air particle toxicity, and atmospheric chemistry, as well as global climate modelers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is divided into two sections. The first section presents characterization of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on regional climate from East Asia to the Pacific. Ground-based, air-born, and satellite data were collected and analyzed. Detailed information about measurement techniques and atmospheric conditions were provided as well. In the second section, authors provide detailed information about the organic and inorganic constituents of atmospheric aerosols. They discuss the chemical and physical processes, temporal and spatial distribution, emissions, formation, and transportation of aerosol particles. In addition, new measurement techniques are introduced. This book hopes to serve as a useful resource to resolve some of the issues associated with the complex nature of the interaction between atmospheric aerosols and climatology.

Book excerpt: Containing papers presented at the twenty-first in a successful series of conferences on the modelling, monitoring and management of air pollution, the book Air Pollution XXI covers what has become a widespread and growing challenge to the international community. Governments face a need to balance concern over its known impacts on local and global health and the environment with improving or maintaining economic development. The key to achieving that balance is to use science to identify the nature and scale of air pollution impacts and to formulate effective policies and regulations. As our knowledge and application of the science of air pollution improves, we are better able to predict, assess and mitigate the implications air pollution has for local, regional, national and international economic systems. The papers deal in the book treat advances in a wide variety of topics, including: Air pollution modelling; Monitoring and measuring; Air quality management; Indoor air pollution; Aerosols and particles; Emission Studies; Air pollution chemistry; Source identification; Global and regional studies; Exposure and health Effects; Economics of air pollution control; Policy and legislation; Case studies; Innovative technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this dissertation aim at advancing our scientific understandings about physical processes involved in the aerosol-cloud-precipitation interaction and quantitatively assessing the impacts of aerosols on the cloud systems with diverse scales over the globe on the basis of the observational data analysis and various modeling studies. As recognized in the Fifth Assessment Report by the Inter-government Panel on Climate Change, the magnitude of radiative forcing by atmospheric aerosols is highly uncertain, representing the largest uncertainty in projections of future climate by anthropogenic activities. By using a newly implemented cloud microphysical scheme in the cloud-resolving model, the thesis assesses aerosol-cloud interaction for distinct weather systems, ranging from individual cumulus to mesoscale convective systems. This thesis also introduces a novel hierarchical modeling approach that solves a long outstanding mismatch between simulations by regional weather models and global climate models in the climate modeling community. More importantly, the thesis provides key scientific solutions to several challenging questions in climate science, including the global impacts of the Asian pollution. As scientists wrestle with the complexities of climate change in response to varied anthropogenic forcing, perhaps no problem is more challenging than the understanding of the impacts of atmospheric aerosols from air pollution on clouds and the global circulation.
