Book excerpt: The development of active controls has the potential to provide weight savings, cost savings, and safety enhancements for many types of aircraft. With the creation of an aeroservoelastic wind tunnel model and testbed, the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics now has the capability to test active controls on representative flexible aircraft configurations. Simulations of the aeroservoelastic model, validated by experimental data, advance the field of active controls by establishing reference test cases that are ready for testing alternative active control laws. This thesis focuses on frequency response simulations that use inputs from a NASTRAN Finite Element Model to create a state-space representation that aids in modern control law design for Active Flutter Suppression. Two analytical-numerical methods for finding the frequency response of the model are used and compared to one another as well as to experimental data to produce a full aeroservoelastic wind tunnel model test case.

Book excerpt: This report describes the formulation of a model of the dynamic behavior of the Benchmark Active Controls Technology (BACT) wind tunnel for active control design and analysis applications. The model is formed by combining the equations of motion for the BACT wind tunnel model with actuator models and a model of wind tunnel turbulence. The primary focus of this report is the development of the equations of motion from first principles by using Lagrange's equations and the principle of virtual work. A numerical form of the model is generated by making use of parameters obtained from both experiment and analysis. Comparisons between experimental and analytical data obtained from the numerical model show excellent agreement and suggest that simple coefficient-based aerodynamics are sufficient to accurately characterize the aeroelastic response of the BACT wind tunnel model. The equations of motion developed herein have been used to aid in the design and analysis of a number of flutter suppresion controllers that have been successfully implemented.

Book excerpt: This paper describes simulation and wind tunnel test results of preview gust load alleviation (GLA) controllers based on H2 and H[infinity] approaches. Aeroservoelastic model and gust generation system capabilities at the University of Washington’s 3ft by 3ft low-speed wind tunnel allow low-cost testing and, hence, the completion of multiple GLA wind tunnel tests effectively and practically. The test article used for the work reported here is a flexible half wing-body-tail model with active control surfaces, including two ailerons and an elevator. The work reported here demonstrates the feasibility of preview-information-based-control, allowing the control system to respond to advance warning about incoming gusts that would be, in-flight, provided by light detection and ranging (LIDAR) devices. In the wind tunnel, such advance warning is provided by measurements of the motion of gust generation vanes that send gusts into the test section. Discrete output feedback is augmented with various preview lengths of information. The experimental results show that gust load is reduced, compared to feedback only, as a function of preview length and is halved with enough long enough preview information compared to open-loop control or closed-loop control without preview. Test results presented here validate simulation results and add insight.
