Book excerpt: "The speed and accuracy of positioning movements as functions of distance, direction, and mass were investigated under simulated weightless conditions. Subjects seated on a frictionless device made blind positioning movements by sliding each of two frictionless masses (1000 or 7000 grams) various distances (10, 20, and 40 cm) either left-to-right or near-to-far. Both speed and accuracy decrease with distance; left-to-right movements take longer, but are more accurate than near-to-far movements. Speed decreases with increased mass. With minor exceptions, the effects are similar to those noted when fixed subjects position weightless objects. The responses of fixed subjects were slower, but more accurate, and were not affected by the variable of mass."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The implications of weightlessness as encountered in space flight are discussed, and the known research dealing with the psychological and physiological effects of zero gravity is critically reviewed. Topics are grouped under the headings of orientation, psychomotor performance, and physiological functions, with a special section on methods of research. The major problem area indicated is the effect of weightlessness on gravity oriented sensory mechanisms, particularly the vestibular apparatus, and consequently on both physiological functions and psychomotor performance. An extensive bibliography is included.

Book excerpt: A bibliography compiled from a number of disciplines which bear on the problem of motion and its effects on human performance is presented. Psychophysiological reports in the area of spatial orientation, perception, and receptor mechanisms provide background on the human organism in relation to motion stimuli. The effects of aerospace vehicle motion are represented by a compilation of studies of performance under acceleration, vibration and buffeting, tumbling, and weightlessness. Reports on training and motion simulation, equipment and methodology, and general anlyses of the whole problem area are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature of civil war in the modern world and in historical perspective. Civil wars represent the principal form of armed conflict since the end of the Second World War, and certainly in the contemporary era. The nature and impact of civil wars suggests that these conflicts reflect and are also a driving force for major societal change. In this sense, "Understanding Civil War: Continuity and Change in Intrastate Conflict" argues that the nature of civil war is not fundamentally changing in nature. The book includes a thorough consideration of patterns and types of intrastate conflict and debates relating to the causes, impact, and changing nature of war. A key focus is on the political and social driving forces of such conflict and its societal meanings, significance and consequences. The author also explores methodological and epistemological challenges related to studying and understanding intrastate war. A range of questions and debates are addressed. What is the current knowledge regarding the causes and nature of armed intrastate conflict? Is it possible to produce general, cross-national theories on civil war which have broad explanatory relevance? Is the concept of civil wars empirically meaningful in an era of globalization and transnational war? Has intrastate conflict fundamentally changed in nature? Are there historical patterns in different types of intrastate conflict? What are the most interesting methodological trends and debates in the study of armed intrastate conflict? How are narratives about the causes and nature of civil wars constructed around ideas such as ethnic conflict, separatist conflict and resource conflict? This book will be of much interest to students of civil wars, intrastate conflict, security studies and IR in general.

Book excerpt: Nineteen normal persons and three deaf subjects with bilateral loss of labyrinthine function (L-D subjects) were exposed to Coriolis accelerations during the brief periods of weightlessness in parabolic flighy by having them move their heads while rotating in a Barany chair at 30 rpm. None of the L-D but all of the normal subjects except three experienced motion sickness: Only one of eight subjects selected on the basis of insusceptibility to symptoms in standard parabolic flights was free of symptoms; the other seven were motion sick and completed on the average only six parabolas. Two of three subjects selected primarily on the basis of low susceptibility to Coriolis acceleration in a slow rotation room were symptom free, and one was motion sick but his level of symptoms did not reach the end point of severe malaise during ten parabolas. In addition to demonstrating susceptibility to motion sickness when exposed to Coriolis acceleration in the weightless phase of parabolic flight, the findings are important in emphasizing the difficulty in predicting susceptibility to motion sickness in novel force environments. Book excerpt: Observations were made on normal subjects and deaf persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects (L-D subjects) under three different conditions in parabolic flight: (1) free-floating, (2) restrained in a Fiberglas mold, and (3) 'standing' on the overhead during a motified parabola generating about -0.05 G unit. There were interindividual differences in the reactions among the normal but not among the L-D subjects. Some normal but none of the L-D subjects experienced a reversal of their personal orientation with regard to up-down under all three conditions. This 'reversal' was considered to have its genesis in the vestibular organs, probably the otolith apparatus. Our findings are in accord with Russian reports describing feelings of inversion among cosmonauts in orbital flight. Attention is called to the necessity of distinguishing between information furnished by touch-pressure, kinesthesis, and stereagnosis under ordinary conditions and agravic touch-pressure, agravic kinethesis, and agravic steragnosis. Book excerpt: This volume contains the communications and discussions of the First Inter national Symposium on Basic Environmental Problems of Man in Space, which was held 29 October - 2 November 1962 at Unesco House, Paris, under the joint sponsorship of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) with the cooperation and support of Unesco, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). At this Symposium 31 communications were presented, 8 of which were from the USSR, 8 from the USA, and 15 from other countries, all by special invitation. The presentations, which included three general review papers, were made in ten half-day working sessions by a distinguished international group. The pro ceedings were not restricted to the acute professional aspects of man in space. In fact, the majority of the vast store of material contained in this volume deals with the more scientific aspects, i. e. with problems of the future, which are con tributed mainly by conventional areas of physiology and psychophysiology, including the technical research activities pertaining to the acquisition, analysis and control of biomedical data.
