Book excerpt: The aerodynamics of a generic sabot piece is treated using the Newtonian approximation. The sabot piece is composed of an inner and outer cylindrical surface, conical surfaces on either end, and longitudinal slices parallel to the axis. When assembled, an integral number of such similar pieces form an annular cylinder. A computer program is included which gives the Newtonian lift, drag, and moment coefficients of the piece in terms of the front and rear cone angles, length, ratio of inner to outer radii, and number of pieces. Only pitching motion is treated, and no aerodynamic interference between sabot pieces or projectile is considered. A discussion of a model for sabot discard is given.

Book excerpt: An experimental program has been conducted to investigate disturbances to the trajectories of gun-launched, fin-stabilized projectiles during the sabot discard process. Correlated near muzzle and down range measurements of sabot component and projectile motion are acquired using both orthogonal, flash X-rays and a ballistics range. Apparent anomalous yawing motion of projectiles correlates with asymmetries in the sabot discard geometry. The perturbations to the flow around the projectile due to these asymmetries are calculated and shown to be of sufficient magnitude to produce significant alterations in the desired trajectory. For the rounds tested, the impulse due to aerodynamic interaction during sabot discard is of the same magnitude as the transverse impulse imparted to the projectile during in-bore acceleration.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Muzzle Jet Asymmetry on Projectile Motion by : Edward M. Schmidt
Download or read book The Effect of Muzzle Jet Asymmetry on Projectile Motion written by Edward M. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas dynamic loadings experienced by a projectile passing through the muzzle gas flow field are investigated by inducing deliberate asymmetries in the muzzle flow. The effect of these asymmetries on projectile yawing motion near first maximum yaw is measured in a ballistics range. The measured data is extrapolated back to the muzzle, and the projectile angular velocity upon penetration of the muzzle blast is evaluated. The projectile linear velocity imparted by the asymmetric gas dynamic loadings is estimated using the hypersonic equivalence principle. The total jump of the projectile trajectory due to both angular and linear velocity is computed and compared with measured values. (Author).

Book excerpt: This multi-disciplinary book presents the most recent advances in exergy, energy, and environmental issues. Volume 2 focuses on fundamentals in the field and covers current problems, future needs, and prospects in the area of energy and environment from researchers worldwide. Based on some selected lectures from the Eleventh International Exergy, Energy and Environmental Symposium (IEEES-11) and complemented by further invited contributions, this comprehensive set of contributions promote the exchange of new ideas and techniques in energy conversion and conservation in order to exchange best practices in "energetic efficiency." Included are fundamental and historical coverage of the green transportation and sustainable mobility sectors, especially regarding the development of sustainable technologies for thermal comforts and green transportation vehicles. Furthermore, contributions on renewable and sustainable energy sources, strategies for energy production, and the carbon-free society constitute an important part of this book.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sabot discard process from a slowly rolling, fin stabilized projectile is examined from the time of shot ejection until the round enters interference-free flight. Launch disturbances relating to muzzle blast, fin, shadowing, mechanical contact, and aerodynamic interference are examined both from the experimental data and analytically. (Author).

Book Synopsis Projectile/Sabot Discard Aerodynamics by : David Siegelman

Book excerpt: An engineering analysis procedure which describes the sabot discard process for gun-launched projectiles has been modified in order to provide an improved tool for investigating the effects of sabot, projectile and launch parameters upon near field dispersive forces. Experimental test data generated by BRL has been used to formulate an improved engineering model of the interaction flow field which develops about the projectile/sabot petal package during the removal process. The experimental data indicated that individual compression wave intersections and reflections are present within the annular flow passage. In order to model this behavior, an integrated flow element approach utilizing local shock/expansion procedures has been evolved. (Author).

Download or read book Aerodynamics of Asymmetric Sabot Discard written by Edward M. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results are presented which examine the pressure distributions upon projectiles during the portion of the launch cycle which involves strong aerodynamic interference between the flight body and sabot components. Particular attention is given to the simulation of asymmetric sabot discard geometries since these configurations result in transverse loadings upon the projectile. The pressure distribution in a given section of the projectile surface is shown to be strongly influenced only by the flow field associated with the sabot component facing that section. The basic features of the flow are similar in both the symmetric and asymmetric cases. The experiment is compared with existing analytical models and recommendations for improvements are made.
Book Synopsis Wind Tunnel Measurements of Sabot Discard Aerodynamics by : Edward M. Schmidt
Download or read book Wind Tunnel Measurements of Sabot Discard Aerodynamics written by Edward M. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses the flow field around a fin stabilized, hypervelocity projectile during the sabot discard process. The mutual interference of the flows around the flight body and three sabot components is examined through wind tunnel tests conducted at a free stream Mach number of 4.5. Since it was not practical to attempt the actuation of all three sabot components, the flow field was simulated by using splitter plates to develop reflection surfaces along planes of symmetry. The data show the effects of multiple shock interactions, shock-boundary layer interactions, and the variation in aerodynamic loadings as the sabot discard proceeds. (Author).
Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of Sabot Discard Aerodynamics by :
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Sabot Discard Aerodynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations have been applied to sabot discard aerodynamics for gun- launched, saboted, armor-piercing projectiles. The portion of the launch cycle that involves strong aerodynamic interference between the projectile and discarding sabot (carrier) components has been investigated. Three sabot components were location symmetrically at various positions near the projectile and at angle of attack. The complex system of shock/boundary-layer interactions between multiple bodies (projectile and sabots), during the discard sequence, has been numerically simulated. Computed and measured surface pressures compare favorably for Mach number 4.5 and Reynolds number six million per meter. Comparison of symmetric sabot discard trajectories predicted using CFD and the AVCO sabot design code are shown.
