Book excerpt: The aerodynamic characteristics of several Solid Fuel Ramjet (SFRJ) projectiles are estimated by a combination of the NSWC-Aeroprediction code and a post-processing analysis that account for the effects of inlet and the buttress threads. Comparison between predicted and measured normal-force curve slope for two SFRJ-SPINNER configurations show good agreement in one case and 18%-23% analytical under-prediction in the other. The agreement in center-of-pressure location is very good in both cases. The analysis explains the unstable flight of the 60mm SFRJ-FINNER Projectile, having original fins. The analysis predicts, for the projectile with extended fins, a static margin of 0.5 calibers at low supersonic Mach numbers, marginal stability as Mach number approaches 4.3 and instability at Mach numbers larger then 4.3. Wind-tunnel tests of this configuration show that the open inlet contributes more normal-force than accounted for in the analysis and that contribution of the fin set is slightly underpredicted by the NSWC code. The predicted normal-force curve slope is up to 11% smaller than experimentally obtained and the center-of-pressure location is in good agreement with test results. The experimentally obtained contribution of the buttress threads to the axial-force coefficient is in good agreement with the predicted value. No effect on the threads on the stability of the projectile was observed under the wind tunnel flow conditions.

Book excerpt: Flight tests of fueled and inert projectiles and a computational analysis of the non-burning internal flowfield have been used to study the performance of 40mm Solid-Fuel Ramjet (SRFJ) projectiles. These projectiles, as originally designed, did not produce detectable thrust in flight. the 40 mm SRFJ is essentially scaled down from a successful 75mm round. Design modifications to the 40 mm SRFJ aimed at reducing the internal velocity and/or increasing internal turbulence yielded slight performance improvements. Alternate solid fuels were found to improve thrust generation. Computational modeling is used to investigate the differences in the non-burning internal flow for 75mm and 40mm SRFJ projectiles. Analysis of internal wall pressures, shock waves and flow separation reveals that the internal flow for the 40 mm geometry can be notably different from that of the 75mm geometry. These differences may have an effect on fuel ignition and burning. However, the computational analysis does not address the effects of projectile axial spin.

A computer program (TRAJET) was developed. The program contains ramjet and trajectory analysis. The ramjet part considers conical shock wave losses, inlet boundary layer losses, normal shock losses, subsonic diffuser recovery, expansion into combustor losses, heat losses at the combustor and nozzle losses. A flat earth trajectory with drag and thrust was considered. The various drag coefficients which were considered are: cowl drag coefficient, skin drag coefficient, wing (or fin) wave drag coefficient and wing (or fin) friction drag coefficient. The 5'/54 solid fuel ramjet has a capability to produce fuel specific impulse in the order of 400 - 900 sec. depending mostly on the flight altitude. The thrust coefficient varies in the range of 0.3 + or - 0.1 depending on the internal areas. A range in the order of 50 miles can be achieved with the ramjet operation compared to only 13 miles achieved by the conventional projectile. At low-altitude launch, a range of over 18 miles can be reached in Air-Defense Scenario. The ramjet propelled projectile reaches the ranges mentioned above at high Mach numbers (M0 1.8).

Computational modeling reveals internal flowfield details not attainable by flight or wind tunnel measurements, thus contributing to the current investigation into the flight performance of solid-fuel ramjet projectiles. The present code employs numerical algorithms termed total variational diminishing (TVD). Computational solutions indicate the importance of several special features of the code including the zonal grid framework, the TVD scheme, and a recently developed backflow turbulence model. The solutions are compared with results of internal surface pressure measurements. As demonstrated by these comparisons, the use of a backflow turbulence model distinguishes between satisfactory and poor flowfield predictions. A spin-stabilized 75mm version has been designed for use as a tank gun training round (TGTR) for the 105mm, M68 tank cannon. Computational efforts aimed at modeling the combustion in the SFRJ are essential to future design modifications and applications of the SFRJ to high-velocity, low drag, anti-tank projectile systems. The steady flow Navier-Stokes equations are written in stream function-vorticity form and solved using a Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. A diffusion-flame combustion model is formulated and linked to the Navier-Stokes equations by equations for the conservation of chemical species mass and source terms in the energy equation. Since a steady-state solution is produced, solid fuel ignition and depletion events are ignored. Radiation effects due to combustion are also neglected. The diffusion-flame combustion model assumes a mass-controlled reaction between fuel and oxidizer (air). The reaction occurs in one step and is undirectional. The reaction is diffusion-controlled so that the reaction rate is faster than the diffusion rate. An actual value for the reaction rate is not required since a single equation for the conservation of fuel and oxidizer mass is formulated. The model includes the effects of axial rotation of the combustion chamber. A phenomenological turbulence model is used. Computed solid fuel regression rate and thrust for a solid-fuel ramjet projectile agree well with experimental data and in-flight observations. The ramjet is a tubular projectile which utilizes air ingested through the inlet to burn the solid fuel. When the combustion process ceases, the projectile becomes a high drag configuration. Several designs have been developed as potential tank gun training rounds (TGTR) for kinetic energy (KE) penetrators. This report documents a computational fluid dynamics study of the external aerodynamics of a finned 60mm solid-fuel ramjet in steady, supersonic, atmospheric flight. The main objective is to compute the external contribution to the pitch-plane aerodynamics using established in-house capabilities. Two space-marching finite-difference procedures are used to compute the external flow fields. Viscous flow results are generated using a thin-layer, parabolized Navier-Stokes technique; inviscid results are generated using an Euler solver. Results are shown for three configurations; Body-alone, body with original fins, and body with extended fins. The influence of initial marching conditions on the modeling of an inlet configuration is examined. A generalized scaling law is introduced which may improve the accuracy of future external space-marching flow computations for ramjets.
