This book was released on 1961 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statistical analysis of horizontal-tail loads was made from measurements obtained on a fighter airplane during operational training. The flights covered altitudes up to about 50,000 feet and Mach numbers up to 1.22. The analysis was performed to determine the feasibility of calculating horizontal-tail load from data on the flight conditions and airplane motions. Loads were calculated by two methods, a direct approach and a Monte carlo technique, and were compared with the measured loads for each type of mission performed during the flight investigation. The framework is a multidisciplinary engineering analysis, fully supported by flight simulation, with software validation at several levels. The book covers topics such as geometrical configurations, configuration aerodynamics and determination of aerodynamic derivatives, weight engineering, propulsion systems (gas turbine engines and propellers), aircraft trim, flight envelopes, mission analysis, trajectory optimisation, aircraft noise, noise trajectories and analysis of environmental performance. A unique feature of this book is the discussion and analysis of the environmental performance of the aircraft, focusing on topics such as aircraft noise and carbon dioxide emissions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An analysis is presented of the vertical-tail loads to be expected as a result of abrupt aileron action in accelerated flight, as in rolls from turns or pull-outs, for example. The formulas derived show that the vertical-tail loads obtained in rolling pull-out maneuvers are directly proportional to the load factor, wing loading, and aileron effectiveness and are inversely proportional to directional stability. Sample calculations for an assumed fighter airplane are presented and discussed. It appears that critical tail loads may occur in rolling pull-out maneuvers, particularly on airplanes with good ailerons and low directional stability.

This book was released on 2008-02-08 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft performance is influenced significantly both by aeroelastic phenomena, arising from the interaction of elastic, inertial and aerodynamic forces, and by load variations resulting from flight and ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters. There is a strong link between aeroelasticity and loads, and these topics have become increasingly integrated in recent years. Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads introduces the reader to the main principles involved in a wide range of aeroelasticity and loads topics. Divided into three sections, the book begins by reviewing the underlying disciplines of vibrations, aerodynamics, loads and control. It goes on to describe simplified models to illustrate aeroelastic behaviour and aircraft response before introducing more advanced methodologies. Finally, it explains how industrial certification requirements for aeroelasticity and loads may be met and relates these to the earlier theoretical approaches used. Presents fundamentals of structural dynamics, aerodynamics, static and dynamic aeroelasticity, response and load calculations and testing techniques. Covers performance issues related to aeroelasticity such as flutter, control effectiveness, divergence and redistribution of lift. Includes up-to-date experimental methods and analysis. Accompanied by a website with MatLAB and SIMULINK programs that relate to the models used. Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads enables the reader to understand the aeroelastic and loads principles and procedures employed in a modern aircraft design office. It will appeal to final year undergraduate and masters students as well as engineers who are new to the aerospace industry.

This book was released on 1945 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Comparisons have been made of measured and calculated loads on the wing and the horizontal tail in pull-up maneuvers for six airplanes ranging in weight from 4,700 to 48,000 pounds. The calculated loads were based on the control motions measured in flight. The aerodynamic characteristics of the airplanes required for the calculations were either obtained directly from wind-tunnel data or computed. Good agreement was obtained between calculated and measured loads for a specified elevator deflection when reliable wind-tunnel data were available and when the airplane maneuvers were consistent with the assumptions. The fact that only fair agreement was obtained in some of the cases was attributed either to poor quantitative knowledge of the aerodynamic parameters or to the violation of the assumptions on which the method is based.
