Book Synopsis Attack from the Sea by : William F. Trimble
Download or read book Attack from the Sea written by William F. Trimble and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An award-winning aviation historian chronicles the Navy's efforts to develop a powerful sea-based strike force through the use of long-range attack seaplanes supported by surface ships and submarines. William Trimble traces the concept back to the early 1930s when American strategic planners sought ways to mount an assault across the Pacific with minimum air support. But it was not until 1950, when the Navy was threatened with losing its big carriers and long-range aircraft, that the idea of a Seaplane Striking Force was resurrected. Lured by breakthroughs in seaplane performance and the promise of the turbojet-powered Convair Sea Dart fighter and the Martin Sea Master attack flying boat, the Navy believed it could challenge the Air Force in the strategic role, the author explains, but found that the technology did not live up to expectations. This book investigates the difficulties of weapon system procurement within the context of strategic realities, interservice rivalry, and constrained defense budgets. It also looks at an alternative weapon system that the Navy saw as a means of extending its conventional reach and as a complement to the carrier and land-based bomber used for nuclear deterrence. That weapon, however, proved unsuccessful in the end. The author helps the reader understand that while conceptual and operational flaws kept the Seaplane Striking Force from achieving the goals set for it, the idea of a mobile weapon system capable of long-range attacks from the sea remains valid. Other books touch briefly on the subject, but this is the first to examine the concept in depth."

Download or read book A Flight Determination of the Tolerable Range of Effective Dihedral on a Conventional Fighter Airplane written by Charles J. Liddell and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conventional fighter airplane was equipped with a special device for varying the effective dihedral in flight. A survey of pilot's opinions was made to determine which values of effective dihedral were intolerable. The relation between the findings and the present Air Force-Navy stability and control specifications is discussed.
Book Synopsis An Investigation of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Dynamic Model of a Transonic Seaplane Design Having a Planing-tail Hull by : Archibald E. Morse (Jr.)
Download or read book An Investigation of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Dynamic Model of a Transonic Seaplane Design Having a Planing-tail Hull written by Archibald E. Morse (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a 1/17-size dynamic model of a 160,000-pound transonic seaplane design having a planing-tail hull with the center of gravity located 2.1 beams aft of the step. Longitudinal stability during smooth-water take-off and landing was satisfactory, and the landing behavior in waves was good. These results were similar to that of a previously tested planing-tail-hull model having the center of gravity slightly aft of the step. The thrust from currently available engines was sufficient to accelerate to take-off in 20 seconds in a distance of 2,530 feet (full-size) with a gross load of 160,000 pounds, and in 34 seconds in a distance of 4,320 feet with a gross load of 200,000 pounds. Spray characteristics were very good in smooth water and in waves.
