Book excerpt: The aim of this dissertation is to develop a modeling methodology of a nonlinear dynamic propulsion system and its integration with a computational fluid dynamics tool suitable for aeroelastic studies. A sensitivity study is conducted to investigate the vehicle structural response and propulsion system performance. The new modeling capability expands typical computational fluid dynamics based aeroelastic analysis by adding a nonlinear dynamic model of the turbomachinery that is capable of capturing relevant gas dynamics. An example case of the aero-propulso-elastic (APE) modeling capability is explored for a supersonic transport with turbofan engines. The propulsion system is composed of an external compression inlet, variable cycle turbofan engine, and convergent-divergent nozzle, where each component model uses a computational fluid dynamics approach to capture the dominant dynamics. The turbomachinery is modeled using a volume dynamics approach, where the focus is on one-dimensional computational analysis. The internal ducts of the inlet and nozzle are modeled with a quasi-one-dimensional MacCormack method. Each individual propulsion component model is compared against independently developed higher fidelity modeling methods and experimental test data, where available. The individual component models are then integrated into an overall simple propulsion system model. This allows for dynamic analysis, control design studies, and for a comparative verification of the turbomachinery model integrated with the higher fidelity three-dimensional computational model required for APE analysis. An overview of the methodology for integrating the propulsion system and elastic vehicle is provided. This is followed by a sensitivity study to explore coupling sensitivities compared against typical aeroelastic analysis. Dynamic and static vehicle responses are considered across key flight conditions and vehicle-level angles of attack, where the inclusion of the propulsion system has a 10% increase in vehicle wing tip deformations. It is found that the propulsion system is stable at various operating conditions, with structural oscillations having little impact on propulsion system performance. Perceived loudness, a key performance metric for a supersonic transport, is investigated using the APE model. APE results lead to an approximately 4 dB increase in noise over a rigid body analysis that neglects the propulsion system. By including the propulsion system in the analysis, the greatest impacts are shown during off nominal conditions, indicating that this modeling capability provides a powerful tool for detailed analysis during maneuvers and off design conditions.
Book Synopsis Supersonic Propulsion Model for Use in Aero Propulso Servo Elastic Vehicle Dynamics Investigation by : Joseph W. Connolly

This book was released on 2009 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Program the Supersonics Project aims to overcome the obstacles associated with supersonic commercial flight. The proposed vehicles are long slim body aircraft with pronounced aero-servo-elastic modes. These modes, coupled with propulsion system dynamics, can potentially lead to design challenges that influence performance characteristics such as aircraft ride quality and stability. Other disturbances upstream of the engine generated from atmospheric wind gusts, angle of attack, and yaw may also affect ride quality and stability. These design considerations can also compete with each other as well, which further complicates the development of the vehicle. To study these phenomena and their interactions an integrated model is needed that includes both airframe structural dynamics as well as the propulsion system dynamics. The focus here will be for optimal propulsion system performance, where normal inlet-engine operations are required to be closer to compressor stall and inlet unstart. This paper covers the propulsion system component modeling and controls development of an integrated mixed compression inlet and turbojet engine that will be used for a preliminary overall vehicle Aero-Propulso-Servo- Elastic model.

Download or read book High-Speed Dreams written by Erik M. Conway and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In High-Speed Dreams, Erik M. Conway constructs an insightful history that focuses primarily on the political and commercial factors responsible for the rise and fall of American supersonic transport research programs. Conway charts commercial supersonic research efforts through the changing relationships between international and domestic politicians, military/NASA contractors, private investors, and environmentalists. He documents post-World War II efforts at the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics and the Defense Department to generate supersonic flight technologies, the attempts to commercialize these technologies by Britain and the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, environmental campaigns against SST technology in the 1970s, and subsequent attempts to revitalize supersonic technology at the end of the century. High-Speed Dreams is a sophisticated study of politics, economics, nationalism, and the global pursuit of progress. Historians, along with participants in current aerospace research programs, will gain valuable perspective on the interaction of politics and technology.
