Book excerpt: "This book is a religious autobiography. The matter of it is not original, and (I thank God) the conclusion of it is not original either. But, so long as minds differ, there must always be some difference in the most hackneyed of pilgrimages, as the pilgrims compare notes at the Confessio. I have tried to avoid all references that could be damaging to anybody but myself; if and where I have failed, I must take this opportunity to ask forgiveness. The publishing of autobiographies by the obscure is always, in any case, a target for criticism; but even obscure things have an interest; let us call it an autobiography. And before you say "self-advertisement" - think, what a bad advertisement. In explanation of the Aeneid-motif which runs through the chapter-headings and parts of the book; I had perhaps better give the obvious set of symbols. Troy is undisturbed and in a sense unreflective religion; in most lives it is overthrown, either to be rebuilt or to be replaced. The Greeks are the doubts that overthrow it. The "miniature Troy" of Helenus is the effort to reconstruct that religion exactly as it was. Carthage is any false goal that, for a time, seems to claim finality. And Rome is Rome."--

Book excerpt: The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed.

Book Synopsis Ronald Knoxs Lectures on Virgils Aeneid by : Francesca Bugliani Knox

This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes available Ronald Knox's hitherto unpublished lectures on Virgil's Aeneid delivered at Trinity College, Oxford, as part of a lecture course on Virgil in 1912. Written with Knox's customary incisiveness and with frequent allusions to contemporary life, the lectures are devoted to the appreciation of the Aeneid and focus on what he called the 'essential and dominant characteristics' that make up its greatness. They deal with Virgil's political and religious outlook, ideas of the afterlife, sense of romance and pathos, narrative style, sources, versification and appreciation of scenery. His interpretation of the relationship between Dido and Aeneas renders redundant the question, much debated to this day, of whether Aeneas loved Dido, and also portrays Aeneas more sympathetically than is currently fashionable. The additional introductory and critical essays by the contributors place the lectures in their historical and scholarly context, bring out their enduring relevance and illustrate how Ronald Knox's distinctive approach might be still developed to advantage. As Robert Speaight noted in his presidential address to the Virgil Society in 1958, 'many of us who love our Virgil will now understand him better because Ronald Knox loved and understood him so well'.

Book excerpt: The Aeneid: one of the seminal literary achievements of the ancient world. This is the story of the foundation of Rome from the ashes of Troy. Aeneas, Trojan veteran and son of Venus, tormented by the vengeful Juno, survives war and the dangerous odyssey which follows to become the legendary ancestor of the Roman people. This epic in heroic verse embodies the saga that unified the mythic history of Greece and Rome, and gave Romans a renewed sense of themselves. A classic tale of a man torn between love, duty, and the divine, the Aeneid remains as relevant now as it was to the ancients. Presented in a new format featuring both Latin and English, with new vocabulary presented in-line as it's encountered, this complete volume allows readers to verify their comprehension or to learn as they go. Each Latin paragraph is displayed with its English translation on the facing page, making this an easy and enjoyable read for students and enthusiasts alike.
