Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine the experiences and expectations of three instrumental music teachers. The participants were all first year teachers who graduated from the Ithaca College School of Music in the spring of 2003. Information about each participant’s experience was gathered throughout their first academic year of teaching via regularly scheduled personal and phone interviews, observations and journal records. In addition to these aforementioned data collection methods, school administrators, mentors, students and band parents were interviewed. The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium core principles were used as a template by which each new teacher could measure his or her success during the initial year of teaching. While personal life issues, personalities and the different communities in which each taught affected these teacher’s experiences, it was determined that the first year instrumental music teachers in this study had difficulties working with band parents, selecting appropriate music for their ensemble and setting limits for student behavior. All three participants believed that they were well prepared to teach music but that certain aspects of teaching especially the desire to be liked by the students made the first year experience a challenge.
