Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lindsay's fourth published novel, 'Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly' was first published in 1926 in the UK and released in the US rather inappropriately as 'Blade for Sale' in the same year. 'Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly' is a humorous adventure set in the France of Louis XIV. Possibly the lightest and least fantastical of David Lindsay's novels, this romp through the realm of the Sun King nevertheless contains moments of high tragedy and tantalising glimpses of Lindsay's fascinating philosophy. Monsieur Gaston de Mailly is a soldier, an adventurer and, above all, a gentleman, trying to combat a disgraceful poverty in the year 1700, in a France where social norms are rapidly changing. An exciting adventure in its own right, this is a book no David Lindsay devotee will want to be without.

Book excerpt: In May 1956, aged just 24, Colin Wilson achieved success and overnight fame with his philosophical study of alienation and transcendence in modern literature and thought, The Outsider. Fifty-four years on, and never out of print in English, the book is still widely read and discussed, having been translated into over thirty languages. In a remarkably prolific career, Wilson, a true polymath, has since written over 170 titles: novels, plays and non-fiction on a variety of subjects. This volume brings together twenty essays by scholars of Colin Wilson's work worldwide and is published in his honour to mark the author's 80th birthday. Each contributor has provided an essay on their favourite Wilson book (or the one they consider to be the most significant). The result is a varied and stimulating assessment of Wilson's writings on philosophy, psychology, literature, criminology and the occult with critical appraisals of four of his most thought-provoking novels. Altogether a fitting tribute to a writer

He encounters a family with three marriageable daughters, and takes refuges from them in the company of some neighbors, including the calculating Celia Hantish and the well-known composer Lore Jensen, who has written a tune called "Sphinx" which hints at the riddle of existence. Meanwhile as Cabot experiments with his machine, he finds that dreams give access to a deeper meaning of life.

Book excerpt: 'Devil's Tor', first published in 1932, is the undoubted masterpiece of David Lindsay. Many of the extraordinary and disturbing themes of his first and most famous work, 'A Voyage to Arcturus' (1920), are explored more deeply and expressed more clearly in this book. The story describes the experiences and mental processes of various people drawn by an active Fate to Devil's Tor, a minor Dartmoor height. Lives are transformed, shattered and ended by forces that can remake stars and galaxies. Nowhere in printed English is the working of the Unseen in living minds more vividly drawn than in David Lindsay; and nowhere in Lindsay more magnificently than in 'Devil's Tor'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginations of female rule and the imaginative strategies of women rulers What is the gender of political power ? What happens to the history of sovereignty when we reconsider it from a gender perspective ? Political sovereignty has been a major theme in European thought from the very beginning of intellectual reflection on community. Philosophy and political theory, historiography, theology, and literature and the arts have, often in dialogue with one another, sought to represent or recalibrate notions of rule. Yet whatever covenant was imagined, sovereign rule has consistently been figured as a male prerogative While in-depth studies of historical women rulers have proliferated in the past decades, these have not systematically explored how all women rulers throughout the entirety of European culture have had to operate in a context that could not think power as female – except in grotesque terms. Strategic Imaginations demonstrates that this constitutive tension can only be brought out by studying women’s political rule in a comparative and longue durée manner. The book offers a collection of essays that brings together studies of female sovereignty from the Polish-Lithuanian to the British Commonwealth, and from the Middle Ages to the genesis of modern democracy. It addresses historical figures and takes stock of the rich yet unsettling imagination of female rule in philosophy, literature and art history. For all the variety of geographical, social, and historical contexts it engages, the book reveals surprising resonances between the strategies women rulers used and the images and practices they adopted in the context of an all-pervasive skepticism toward female rule.
