Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1854, funded by a syndicate of San Francisco businessmen, Charles D. Poston and a party of twenty-five men launched an expedition from San Francisco to Sinaloa and Sonora, Mexico, before trekking north into Arizona and returning to California. Reconnaissance in Sonora brings to light Poston’s handwritten report to the syndicate about the journey, published here for the first time. Poston led his party through Sonora and the territory of the 1854 Gadsden Purchase, which today encompasses southern Arizona and a portion of southern New Mexico. The syndicate’s charge to the young adventurer was to acquire land in Mexico in anticipation of the Gadsden Purchase and the building of the transcontinental railroad. Reconnaissance in Sonora details Poston’s expedition, including the founding of the town of Colorado City at the site of present-day Yuma, Arizona. C. Gilbert Storms explores the American ideas of territorial expansion and Manifest Destiny, the national debate over a route for a transcontinental railroad, the legends of rich gold and silver mines in northern Mexico, and the French and American filibusters that plagued northern Mexico in the early 1850s.

Book excerpt: Danger is waiting to strike in the Sonoran Desert When the part-time cavalry scout Murphy agrees to ride out and warn the Arizona settlers that Apaches have jumped their reservation, he isn't expecting any trouble. The worst that might happen is the Indians come after his scalp. But when he runs into the beautiful Rosemary, he finds himself pitted against ruthless enemies of every kind. Kidnappers, comancheros and renegade Apaches are on his trail - and after his blood. But most implacable of all, there is the Sonoran Desert itself, where everything that grows either bites, stings or scratches. It has claimed many victims over the years and Murphy could be next. Murphy needs all his skill and wit about him if he is to have any hope of survival. Apache Country is a brilliantly authentic tale of the Old West, combining meticulous research with gripping story-telling. Christopher Kenworthy was a journalist and novelist. His other Westerns include Last Shot and Hired Gun, and he has also written two naval fiction series - the John Paul Jones adventures and the In the Dark of the Moon saga.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You've certainly heard of the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, "Shoeless Joe" and the other "outlaws," but do their stories end in a Windy City courtroom? When banished from baseball, an "outlaw" had two options: hang up the cleats, or find an outlaw league roster spot. SOUTHWESTERN OUTLAW BASEBALL is a meandering enumeration of baseball's westward expansion with some skillfully-placed geographical and historical tidbits, concluding with the collapse of the outlaw Copper League in 1927. From "Bean Town" to Bisbee and points in between, SOUTHWESTERN OUTLAW BASEBALL paints a poetic picture of some disgraced athletes who weren't quite ready to put their flannels in mothballs."

Graff Collection of Western Americana consists of some 10,000 books, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, broadsides, broadsheets, and photographs, of which about half are described in the present catalogue. The Graff Collection displays the remarkable breadth of interest, knowledge, and taste of a great bibliophile and student of Western American history. From this rich collection, now in The Newberry Library, Chicago, its former Curator, Colton Storm, has compiled a discriminating and representative Catalogue of the rarer and more unusual materials. Collectors, bibliographers, librarians, historians, and book dealers specializing in Americana will find the Graff Catalogue an interesting and essential tool. Detailed collations and binding descriptions are cited, and many of the more important works have been annotated by Mr. Graff and Mr. Storm. An extensive index of persons and subjects makes the book useful to the scholar as well as to the collector and dealer. The book is not a bibliography but rather a guide to rare or unique source materials now enriching The Newberry Library's outstanding holdings in American history.
