Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancing the state of aviation safety is a central mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Congress requested this review of NASA's aviation safety-related research programs, seeking an assessment of whether the programs have well-defined, prioritized, and appropriate research objectives; whether resources have been allocated appropriately among these objectives; whether the programs are well coordinated with the safety research programs of the Federal Aviation Administration; and whether suitable mechanisms are in place for transitioning the research results into operational technologies and procedures and certification activities in a timely manner. Advancing Aeronautical Safety contains findings and recommendations with respect to each of the main aspects of the review sought by Congress. These findings indicate that NASA's aeronautics research enterprise has made, and continues to make, valuable contributions to aviation system safety but it is falling short and needs improvement in some key respects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book excerpt: Advanced aerial mobility is a newly emerging industry that aims to develop and operate new air vehicles potentially capable of safe, reliable, and low-noise vertical flight. The world has seen a recent increase in the adoption of electric vertical lift aircraft for urban, suburban and rural operations. These new innovations and technologies change the way that we move cargo and people, affecting industries across the economy. These changes will challenge today's airspace monitoring systems and regulatory environment. The U.S. government and its regulatory agencies need technical guidance to facilitate the development of these technologies, and to create the regulatory framework to foster the growth of this vertical flight industry to the benefit of the aviation industry. Advancing Aerial Mobility evaluates the potential benefits and challenges associated with this emerging industry. This report provides recommendations that seek to foster an environment in which the nation can maintain its leading position in developing, deploying, and embracing these new technologies. This publication presents a national vision for advanced aerial mobility, market evolution, and safety and security management.

Book Synopsis In-Time Aviation Safety Management by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book In-Time Aviation Safety Management written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of continuous efforts to address known hazards in the national airspace system (NAS) and to respond to issues illuminated by analysis of incidents and accidents have made commercial airlines the safest mode of transportation. The task of maintaining a high level of safety for commercial airlines is complicated by the dynamic nature of the NAS. The number of flights by commercial transports is increasing; air traffic control systems and procedures are being modernized to increase the capacity and efficiency of the NAS; increasingly autonomous systems are being developed for aircraft and ground systems, and small aircraftâ€"most notably unmanned aircraft systemsâ€"are becoming much more prevalent. As the NAS evolves to accommodate these changes, aviation safety programs will also need to evolve to ensure that changes to the NAS do not inadvertently introduce new risks. Real-time system-wide safety assurance (RSSA) is one of six focus areas for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) aeronautics program. NASA envisions that an RSSA system would provide a continuum of information, analysis, and assessment that supports awareness and action to mitigate risks to safety. Maintaining the safety of the NAS as it evolves will require a wide range of safety systems and practices, some of which are already in place and many of which need to be developed. This report identifies challenges to establishing an RSSA system and the high-priority research that should be implemented by NASA and other interested parties in government, industry, and academia to expedite development of such a system.

This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must read for researchers and practitioners with a personal and professional desire to improve general aviation safety. As a general aviation enthusiast and researcher, the author wants to ensure general aviation remains a viable and flourishing sector of the aviation industry. This book highlights a growing phenomenon of integrating innovative technologies in general aviation. The goal is to ensure technologists, researchers and the aviation industry ameliorate collaborative endeavors to counterbalance the pros and cons of integrating technologies in general aviation to decrease the number of accidents and fatalities. Technologically advanced aircraft are fascinating and pilots with the proper training are able to capitalize on flying advanced aircraft with comparable technologies that are analogous to commercial and military aircraft. This book expounds on general aviation pilots' concerns with integrating glass cockpits in general aviation. The research within corroborates a previous study that technologically advanced aircraft have not improved general aviation safety. At issue are training, safety, proficiency and competency, and aeronautical decision-making implications. General aviation remains under researched when compared to commercial and military aviation sectors. This book provides recommendations for improving general aviation safety by eliminating the after-effects of innovations in general aviation. accidents, adaptable automation, aeronautical decision-making, aeronautical examination, air traffic control, air transport industry, aircraft, analog gauges, assessments, Automation management, autopilot, aviation, aviation leaders, Aviation Safety Officer (ASO), Aviation Safety Program (ASP), avionics, certified flight instructors, cockpit instrumentation, cockpit scanning, cockpit standardization, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), commercial aviation, Crew Resource Management (CRM), curriculum, data analysis, decision-making skills, dispatchers, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), FITS training, Fixed-wing aircraft, flight management systems, flight schools, flight training, Future Aviation Advisory Committee (FAAC), General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC), glass cockpits, global positioning systems, Government Accountability Office, ground controllers, Human Factors Analysis & Classification System, International Civil Aviation Organization, National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), National Transportation Safety Board , NextGen, pilots, Safety Management System (SMS), Single-pilot resource management, snowball sampling, technologically advanced aircraft (TAA), training deficiency, van Kaam model #accidents, #adaptableautomation, #aeronauticaldecision-making, #aeronauticalexamination, #airtrafficcontrol, #airtransportindustry, #aircraft, #analoggauges, #assessments, #Automationmanagement, #autopilot, #aviation, #aviationleaders, #AviationSafetyOfficer(ASO), #AviationSafetyProgram(ASP), #avionics, #certifiedflightinstructors, #cockpitinstrumentation, #cockpitscanning, #cockpitstandardization, #CodeofFederalRegulations(CFR), #commercialaviation, #CrewResourceManagement(CRM), #curriculum, #dataanalysis, #decision-makingskills, #dispatchers, #FederalAviationAdministration(FAA), #FITStraining, #Fixed-wingaircraft, #flightmanagementsystems(FMS), #flightschools, #flighttraining, #FutureAviationAdvisoryCommittee(FAAC), #GeneralAviationJointSteeringCommittee(GAJSC), #glasscockpits, #globalpositioningsystems(GPS), #GovernmentAccountabilityOffice(GAO), #groundcontrollers, #HumanFactorsAnalysisandClassificationSystem, #InternationalCivilAviationOrganization(ICAO), #NationalAeronauticsandSpaceAdministration(NASA), #NationalTransportationSafetyBoard(NTSB), #NextGenerationofAirTransportationSystem(NextGen), #pilots, #SafetyManagementSystem(SMS), #Single-pilotresourcemanagement, #snowballsampling, #technologicallyadvancedaircraft(TAA), #trainingdeficiency, #vanKaammodel

Book Synopsis Why Airplanes Crash by : Clinton V. Oster Jr.
Download or read book Why Airplanes Crash written by Clinton V. Oster Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the causes of airplane accidents and what private and public policies are needed to improve aviation safety. It begins by examining the safety record of the United States commuter airline industry in the post-deregulation era characterized by increased emphasis by airlines on cost control and growing pressures on the air traffic control and airport system. The authors go beyond the safety of the scheduled airlines to examine the reasons for accidents in the nonscheduled and general aviation segments of the United States industry, where the bulk of fatalities occur and where airline pilots increasingly receive most of their training and experience. They then turn to an examination of aviation safety throughout the world, first with a detailed comparison of Canadian and American aviation safety, and then with a look at air safety in all regions of the world and the safety performances of all the world's major airlines. Three emerging issues are then examined in greater detail: assessing the margin of safety, worldwide aging of all airline fleets, and terrorism.
