Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public and political concern about the increasing prevalence of diabetes has prompted major concern about treatment of patients with the condition. Foot complications are some of the commonest causes of hospitalisation of people with diabetes and if not treated well often lead to amputation. There is evidence that 85% of these amputations can be prevented by better understanding of the problem and by multi-disciplinary teams working more effectively together. This has been recognised and NICE have recently published guidelines on diabetic foot complications as have Diabetes UK and NHS Diabetes. These have been successful in raising awareness of the problem but the local multi-disciplinary teams need clear practical advice on how to manage the foot in diabetes and deliver high quality care. With the current interest in improving outcomes for patients with foot complications this is an ideal time to make a practical evidence-based handbook available. This book will provide clear practical guidelines on how to manage all aspects of the foot in diabetes as well as an in-depth analysis of the most recent evidence. The book will be based on care pathways with algorithms for each section so it would be of practical value in any clinic in primary or secondary care. It will appeal to a wide range of health care professionals treating people with diabetes: vascular surgeons and trainees, orthopaedic surgeons, diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and tissue viability nurses.

Book excerpt: This book first proposes a noninvasive screening method for diabetes based on the thermoregulation of the peroneal vessel. Since diabetes affects the proneal vessel of the patients significantly, the thermoregulatory behaviour of peroneal vessel is studied for induced hot and cold stress in this work. Next, the authors highlight recent findings in the area of human mesenchymal stem cells sources, their differentiation ability, immunogenicity, adaptation to the microenvironment, as well as use in human clinical trials. The authors also propose that, given the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant pathogens and the failure of antibiotic-exclusive therapeutics in the treatment of diabetic foot infections, combinations of antimicrobial peptides and antibiotics may be a potential treatment alternative. Advanced diabetic foot ulcer therapies are explored based on current research. Recent studies show that diabetic patients have a 25% risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers in their lifetime. Lastly, a study was carried out to investigate the effects of social support on the reduction of wound size after four weeks of treatment with standard care in patients with Grade B, Stage I diabetic foot ulcer.

Book excerpt: The third edition of Clinical Care of the Diabetic Foot has been fully revised and updated, and it will continue to be the essential handbook on foot care and the treatment of the diabetic foot. The diabetic foot is typically the victim of nerve damage, micro- and macrovascular disease and faulty healing, mechanisms that without proper care can lead to amputation. More than 80,000 diabetes-related amputations are performed in the United States each year, but non-specialist primary care providers, as well as residents, nurses, and diabetes educators, can help prevent this devastating, life-altering, and expensive complication. Healthcare professionals and medical students alike will find that this concise, well-indexed, and updated guide offers practical advice on detecting and managing diabetes-related foot complications.

Divided into three sections, the first part focuses on clinical features and diagnosis; the second on pathophysiology; and the third on the management of diabetic foot problems. In addition to updating all previous chapters, several new contributions have been added, reflecting advances in our understanding of the causes of diabetic foot ulcers and efforts to develop new and more effective therapies. The authors, many practicing at the famous Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center, again illuminate the successful new multidisciplinary approach now clearly required for successful treatment of the diabetic foot. Drawing on the experiences of diabetologists, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists, orthotists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, 4th Edition expertly describes standard techniques and current methods derived from the most recent data. This updated edition will be of significant value to all physicians and researchers with interest in a state-of-the-art understanding of the diabetic foot.

People with diabetes are 15 times more likely to have a limb amputated due to gangrene. Diabetic foot is an often overlooked complication in general diabetes care. This book is a practical guide to the management of diabetes-related complications of the foot. Beginning with an overview of diabetic foot care, anatomy and biomechanics of the foot, and peripheral neuropathy, the following sections cover a variety of diabetes-related disorders. Each condition is explained in detail covering its pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis and treatment, including surgery and rehabilitation where appropriate. The final section discusses recent advances and future techniques and technologies in the management of diabetic foot. The text is further enhanced by algorithms and diagrams to assist understanding of potential treatment strategies.
