Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the rapid progress in the area of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). MDS are a group of age-associated heterogeneous malignant bone marrow stem cell disorders. MDS are characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, which leads to refractory cytopenias and to clonal instability. Patients with MDS have myeloid dysplasia, intramedullary apoptosis and an increased risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The use of next generation sequencing has allowed for the identification of molecular mutations in several genes in about 90% of MDS patients. Several mutations will likely be incorporated into future prognostic scoring systems for MDS. About 50% of MDS cases are characterized by the presence of cytogenetic abnormalities. The correct morphological and cytogenetic analysis interpretation plays an important role in diagnosis and prognosis of these disorders. Cell death and an inflammatory gene signature are associated with MDS. Better understanding of the genetic and molecular mechanisms of MDS pathogenesis provides an opportunity for new treatment strategies to be developed. Promising novel therapies targeting pathophysiological mechanisms of MDS are being studied but the drugs currently used in MDS therapy remain limited. The only curative therapy for MDS is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Recent advances in strategies to minimize transplant-related toxicity make this treatment possible for more MDS patients who are sufficiently fit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the standard diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and examines ongoing research developments in the field. The importance of appropriate prognostic stratification, taking into account recent advances in understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of MDS, is explained, and both established and novel treatment approaches are discussed in depth. The coverage includes, for example, the use of erythropoietic stimulating agents, iron chelation therapy, the immunomodulator lenalidomide, hypomethylating agents such as azacitidine, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Myelodysplastic syndromes are heterogeneous and complex hematologic disorders ranging from indolent conditions to forms approaching the aggressiveness of acute myeloid leukemia. The diversity of MDS gives rise to challenges in diagnosis and clinical decision making, and the highly variable clinical course necessitates a risk-adapted treatment strategy and the application of disease-specific therapies. Hematologists, oncologists, and other interested clinicians will find this book to be an invaluable source of information on diagnostic and prognostic evaluation and treatment selection.

Book excerpt: This book provides a concise update on current understanding of the biology of acute and chronic leukemias and other bone marrow neoplasms, including myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders, and explores new and emerging treatments. There is a particular focus on the molecular abnormalities that are drivers of leukemia and on their detection by modern molecular techniques. Knowledge of the ways in which genomic and metabolic abnormalities in the hematologic neoplasms affect prognosis and treatment decision making is reviewed. Detailed attention is devoted to targeted therapies, including novel drugs, and to potential targets for future drug development. In addition, readers find in-depth discussion of cellular and antibody-based immunotherapies as well as the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of leukemias and bone marrow malignancies. The book is of special interest for hematologists, oncologists, and cancer researchers; it is also of value for hematology trainees and medical students.

This affects a wide spectrum of research and practice, anywhere from basic research to health care organization. Core examples of these close associations are addressed in this book. Starting with basic research, the first chapters cover cancer development, mTOR inhibition, senescent cells altering the tumor microenvironment, and immune senescence affecting cancer vaccine response. Taking into account the multidisciplinarity of geriatric oncology, several chapters focus on geriatric and oncologic aspects in patient assessment, treatment options, nursing and exercise programs. The book is rounded off by a discussion on the impact of the metabolic syndrome illustrating the interactions between comorbidity and cancer and a chapter on frailty. This book provides the reader with insights that will hopefully foster his or her reflection in their own research and practice to further the development of this most exciting field. Given the aging of the population worldwide and the high prevalence of cancer, it is essential reading not only for oncologists and geriatricians but for all health practitioners.

The diagnosis of MDS can be challenging, while the outcomes of MDS patients vary widely. This book provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of MDS. The book begins by reviewing the diagnostic workup of MDS, with a specific focus on the 2016 WHO criteria for MDS diagnosis, and the biology and pathophysiology of the disease. The text then presents the molecular landscape of MDS and its impact on disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decisions. The book continues by profiling different prognostic models of MDS and concludes with a thorough review of treatment algorithms for lower and higher-risk MDS, as well as the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplant to combat the disease. Written by experts in the field, Diagnosis and Management of Myelodysplastic Syndromes: A Clinical Guide is a valuable resource for clinicians, practitioners, and researchers who are interested in MDS. The text also features over 100 illustrations, photographs, and tables.

Book excerpt: Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a family of clonal haematopoietic stem cells disorders characterized by dysplasia, ineffective hematopoiesis and susceptibility to transformation to Acute Myeloblastic Leukaemia (AML) that are shown to be strikingly refractory to current therapeutic modalities. The first chapter of this book provides a detailed review of the risk factors, treatment options and prognosis of MDS. Chapter two studies the inflammatory and autoimmune nature of MDS. Chapter three discusses the pathogenesis of 5q-syndrome. Chapter four examines the genetic mutations identified in MDS and their significance. Chapter five reviews different prognostic factors and stratifications of risk in Argentinean patients with MDS. Chapter six discusses epigenetics and epigenetic therapy. Chapter seven introduces mild oral chemotherapy treatments for elderly patients with a higher-risk myelodyspastic syndrome. Chapter eight discusses lenalidomide treatment in lower risk myelodysplastic syndromes. Chapter nine analyzes the old and new-integrating prognostic models and mutational advances with epigenetic and cellular therapies for MDS. The last chapter studies the entropy evaluation of bone marrow biopsies in MDS.

Book excerpt: Being diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome can be daunting and unexpected. Many people have never heard of the blood/ bone marrow disorder MDS. I have written this short MDS book to help you quickly understand some of the jargon and medical issues relating to Myelodysplastic syndromes. This book will cover diagnosis, symptoms, treatments and more. If you have any of the following questions then this guide may help you understand some aspect of MDS what does MDS stand for? What is Myelodysplastic Syndrome? How MDS is diagnosed? How does MDS typically affect the body? What MDS treatments are available? Is MDS cancer? Does MDS turn into AML? Is MDS genetic? There is also a section which covers how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and understanding a person's limitations when living with MDS. The effects of common symptoms of anaemia, low blood cell counts (white blood cell types and red blood cells) and low platelets and how to counter their effects with growth factors and blood transfusions. Ideal for MDS sufferers and their caregivers / family. Also included are references to sites that you may find useful. Please note, I am not a medical professional, but have had a family member with this condition and help care for them over many years. All the best, Arthur Hadley
