Book excerpt: In Mechanical Testing of Engineering Materials students learn how to perform specific mechanical tests of engineering materials, produce comprehensive reports of their findings, and solve a variety of materials problems. The book features engaging, instructive experiments on topics such as the modification of material microstructure through heat treatment, hardness measurement and the interpretation of hardness data, and the extraction of elastic and plastic material properties of different materials from uniaxial monotonic and cyclic loading experiments. Students also learn about the mechanical behavior of viscoelastic materials, wear testing, and how to correlate measured fatigue properties to microstructure characteristics. This latest edition of Mechanical Testing of Engineering Materials includes illustrative examples, important formulae, practice problems and their solutions, and updated experiments with representative results. In addition, each chapter features a question set which can be used for laboratory assignments. Based on the requirements for undergraduate courses in the discipline, the book is ideal for classes on the mechanical behavior of materials.

Book excerpt: This STAR on asphalt materials presents the achievements of RILEM TC 206 ATB, acquired over many years of interlaboratory tests and international knowledge exchange. It covers experimental aspects of bituminous binder fatigue testing; the background on compaction methods and imaging techniques for characterizing asphalt mixtures including validation of a new imaging software; it focuses on experimental questions and analysis tools regarding mechanical wheel tracking tests, comparing results from different labs and using finite element techniques. Furthermore, long-term rutting prediction and evaluation for an Austrian road are discussed, followed by an extensive analysis and test program on interlayer bond testing of three different test sections which were specifically constructed for this purpose. Finally, the key issue of manufacturing reclaimed hot mix asphalt in the laboratory is studied and recommendations for laboratory ageing of bituminous mixtures are given.

Therefore, it becomes necessary to obtain reliable information about the material and its current state. This is not easy task considering the variety of materials present and their applications. Therefore, this reprint brings together publications focused on two areas: new diagnostic methods adapted to new materials; and the procurement of new information about conventional materials used in innovative technical solutions. The solutions to the above are seen in the use of modern sensory systems, enabling and seeking information in new physical relationships, i.e., analyzing cross effects. In this collection, we can read about research on intelligent materials based, for example, on microgranules or rubber-ferritic conglomerate, which, in addition to fulfilling functional tasks, can provide valuable information about the operation of the object. Innovative ways of obtaining information about composites, steel, concrete and even printed plastic elements are discussed. Additionally, a review is provided, covering topics from miniature steel samples to the elements of a construction crane. This reprint is a necessary supplement and provides an exchange of experience and achievements in acquiring new information on both classic and modern materials used currently in mechanical engineering. By accessing new information on materials and their condition, it will be possible to maintain the safety and reliability of mechanical engineering facilities at an appropriate level.

INCORPORATING THE COMMERCIAL TEXT BOOK COMPANY PITMAN HOUSE, 381383 CHURCH STREET, TORONTO PREFACE THIS book is the outcome of a series of articles on Testing Machines and their Applications which I contributed to Machinery during the years 1931-1932. On considering requests for the publication of the articles in book form, I felt that, while a number of books on the testing of materials were in existence, there was room for one that coupled descriptions of modern testing equipment with its mode of use and which at the same time embraced in a practical way the theory underlying present-day developments in the testing of metals and their alloys. Consequently, the original articles form but a small part of the book. Only such types of testing equipment are described as may be found in up-to-date works, testing rooms, and laboratories. Moreover, some attempt has been made to keep within the range of tests already standardized by the British Standards Institution, or which bear closely on commercial testing. As the demand on engineering practice becomes more severe, it is reflected in the test room and its personnel. It is hoped, therefore, that the book will be helpful to those whose work brings theminto close touch with mechanical testing, and for whom, in fact, the book is mainly intended. Students of Strength of Materials should also find the book of service. I have adopted the plan of placing references at the end of the book and of indexing them, each with the number of the page to which it refers. My acknowledgments must be made with respect to sources of information and help. Especially must I thank Professor W. R. D. Jones, D. Sc., for his assistance and criticism through out the progress of the work. I have also to thank Mr. J. G. Grodsell for allowing me to draw upon his extensive experience in matters concerning sheet metals and Professor W. N. Thomas, M. A., D. Phil. To the Editor of Machinery for permission to make use of bhe articles contributed to that Journal to the Institution of A. utomobile Engineers and The American Society for Testing Materials for allowing me to extract from Papers published vi PREFACE in their respective Proceedings and which are included among the list of references, I have pleasure in also making acknow ledgment. Book excerpt: Production, new materials development, and mechanics are the central subjects of modern industry and advanced science. With a very broad reach across several different disciplines, selecting the most forward-thinking research to review can be a hefty task, especially for study in niche applications that receive little coverage. For those subjects, collecting the research available is of utmost importance. The Handbook of Research on Advancements in Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering is an essential reference source that examines emerging obstacles in these fields of engineering and the methods and tools used to find solutions. Featuring coverage of a broad range of topics including fabricating procedures, automated control, and material selection, this book is ideally designed for academics; tribology and materials researchers; mechanical, physics, and materials engineers; professionals in related industries; scientists; and students.

Book excerpt: The 1999 Joint Cryogenic Engineering Conference (CEC) and International Cryogenic Materials Conference (ICMC) were held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from July 12th to July 16th. The joint conference theme was "Cryogenics into the Next Millennium". The total conference attendance was 797 with participation from 28 countries. As with previous joint CEC and ICMC Conferences, the participants were able to benefit from the joint conference's coverage of cryogenic applications and materials and their interactions. The conference format of plenary, oral and poster presentations, and an extensive commercial exhibit, the largest in CEC-ICMC history, aimed to promote this synergy. The addition of short courses, workshops, and a discussion meeting enabled participants to focus on some of their specialties. The technical tour, organized by Suzanne Gendron, was of Hydro-Quebec's research institute laboratories near Montreal. In keeping with the conference venue the entertainment theme was Jazz, culminating in .the performance of Vic Vogel and his Jazz Big Band at the conference banquet. This 1999 ICMC Conference was chaired by Julian Cave of IREQ - Institut de recherche d'Hydro-Quebec, and the Program Chair and Vice-Chair were Michael Green of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Balu Balachandran of the Argonne National Laboratory respectively. We especially appreciate the contributions of both the CEC and ICMC Boards and the conference managers, Centennial Conferences, under the supervision of Paula Pair and Kim Bass, in making this conference a success.
