Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present a coherent collection of overviews of recent Russian research in Control Theory and Nonlinear Dynamics written by active investigators in these fields. It is needless to say that the contribution of the scientists of the former Soviet Union to the development of nonlinear dynamics and control was significant and that their scientific schools and research community have highly evolved points of view, accents and depth which complemented, enhanced and sometimes inspired research directions in the West. With scientific exchange strongly increasing, there is still a consider able number of Eastern publications unknown to the Western community. We have therefore encouraged the authors to produce extended bibliogra phies in their papers. The particular emphasis of this volume is on the treatment of uncer tain systems in a deterministic setting-a field highly developed in the former Soviet Union and actively investigated in the West. The topics are concentrated around the three main branches of un certain dynamics which are the theory of Differential Games, the set membership approach to Evolution, Estimation and Control and the the ory of Robust Stabilization. The application of these techniques to non linear systems as well as the global optimization of the latter are also among the issues treated in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new optimization approaches and methods and their application in real-world and industrial problems. Numerous processes and problems in real life and industry can be represented as optimization problems, including modeling physical processes, wildfire, natural hazards and metal nanostructures, workforce planning, wireless network topology, parameter settings for controlling different processes, extracting elements from video clips, and management of cloud computing environments. This book shows how to develop algorithms for these problems, based on new intelligent methods like evolutionary computations, ant colony optimization and constraint programming, and demonstrates how real-world problems arising in engineering, economics and other domains can be formulated as optimization problems. The book is useful for researchers and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: In response to the growing interest in bounding error approaches, the editors of this volume offer the first collection of papers to describe advances in techniques and applications of bounding of the parameters, or state variables, of uncertain dynamical systems. Contributors explore the application of the bounding approach as an alternative to the probabilistic analysis of such systems, relating its importance to robust control-system design.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamilton-Jacobi equations and other types of partial differential equa tions of the first order are dealt with in many branches of mathematics, mechanics, and physics. These equations are usually nonlinear, and func tions vital for the considered problems are not smooth enough to satisfy these equations in the classical sense. An example of such a situation can be provided by the value function of a differential game or an optimal control problem. It is known that at the points of differentiability this function satisfies the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs-Bellman equation. On the other hand, it is well known that the value function is as a rule not everywhere differentiable and therefore is not a classical global solution. Thus in this case, as in many others where first-order PDE's are used, there arises necessity to introduce a notion of generalized solution and to develop theory and methods for constructing these solutions. In the 50s-70s, problems that involve nonsmooth solutions of first order PDE's were considered by Bakhvalov, Evans, Fleming, Gel'fand, Godunov, Hopf, Kuznetzov, Ladyzhenskaya, Lax, Oleinik, Rozhdestven ski1, Samarskii, Tikhonov, and other mathematicians. Among the inves tigations of this period we should mention the results of S.N. Kruzhkov, which were obtained for Hamilton-Jacobi equation with convex Hamilto nian. A review of the investigations of this period is beyond the limits of the present book. A sufficiently complete bibliography can be found in [58, 126, 128, 141].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of two-person, zero-sum differential games started at the be ginning of the 1960s with the works of R. Isaacs in the United States and L.S. Pontryagin and his school in the former Soviet Union. Isaacs based his work on the Dynamic Programming method. He analyzed many special cases of the partial differential equation now called Hamilton Jacobi-Isaacs-briefiy HJI-trying to solve them explicitly and synthe sizing optimal feedbacks from the solution. He began a study of singular surfaces that was continued mainly by J. Breakwell and P. Bernhard and led to the explicit solution of some low-dimensional but highly nontriv ial games; a recent survey of this theory can be found in the book by J. Lewin entitled Differential Games (Springer, 1994). Since the early stages of the theory, several authors worked on making the notion of value of a differential game precise and providing a rigorous derivation of the HJI equation, which does not have a classical solution in most cases; we mention here the works of W. Fleming, A. Friedman (see his book, Differential Games, Wiley, 1971), P.P. Varaiya, E. Roxin, R.J. Elliott and N.J. Kalton, N.N. Krasovskii, and A.I. Subbotin (see their book Po sitional Differential Games, Nauka, 1974, and Springer, 1988), and L.D. Berkovitz. A major breakthrough was the introduction in the 1980s of two new notions of generalized solution for Hamilton-Jacobi equations, namely, viscosity solutions, by M.G. Crandall and P.-L.

Book excerpt: This is the second and final issue of the collection of papers that were contributed by friends and colleagues of (Late) Professor P. R. "Pat" Sethna of the University of Minnesota to commemorate his 70th birthday on May 26, 1993. The first set of contributions was published in Nonlinear Dynamics as the last issue (no. 6) of Vol. 4 in 1993. As circumstances would have it, Professor Sethna was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1992 and, after an extended battle with the disease, he passed away on November 4, 1993, just a few days before the first set of contributed papers appeared in print. It is gratifying to report that the organizers of these vi Foreword commemorative issues in Nonlinear Dynamics were able to present to Professor Sethna, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, complete details of the planned commemorative issues. This second set of contributions is dedicated, in memoriam, to Professor P. R. Sethna. As many of you are well aware, Professor Sethna was an active researcher in the field of nonlinear vibrations and dynamics for nearly forty years, making many fundamental and significant contributions to both the theoretical and applied aspects of this field. He was also recognized for his outstanding leadership and administrative abilities, amply demonstrated through his position as the Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota for twenty-six years (1966-1992).
