Book excerpt: Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 5 is a collection of scientific essays that focuses on the developments and applications in the field of liquid crystal science. The text begins with an article about the role of liquid crystals in living systems. The subjects covered in this article include the properties of phospholipids, lipid order parameters, lipid diffusion, and the movements of proteins in model and natural biomembranes. The second essay discusses the use of Mossbauer techniques to lyotropic liquid crystals. Such a method provides a list of characteristics of the crystals in focus. Another topic of interest is the theoretical and experimental aspects of microemulsions. The section that follows describes the carbonaceous mesophases and disclination structures. Types of disclination such as wedge disclination, twist disclinations, and disclinations arrays are covered. The neutron incoherent scattering is the focus of the last essay in the book. The book will provide valuable insights for scientists, developer of crystal displays, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains an eclectic collection of 22 papers on liquid crystalline polymers presented at the Sixth Polymer Workshop, in the series sponsored by the European Science Foundation, entitled: 'Liquid Crystal Polymer Systems', in Gentofte, Denmark, 12-14 September 1983. Since a contribution to this volume was strictly voluntary, and in some cases represents a considerably expanded version of that which was presented, it is strictly speaking not correct to term this a 'proceedings'. A description of the aims and purposes of the European Science Foundation with respect to the polymer area has been presented in: Shell Polymers, Vol. 5, No.2, pp. 34-35, 1981. The papers given here represent a cross-section of current research interests in liquid crystalline polymers in the areas of theory, synthesis, characterization, structure-property relationships and applications. At least some of the current interest is motivated by attempts to practically exploit the novel properties of these materials in the developing tech nologies of high strength fibres and advanced materials for constructional purposes, but also for functional materials in the areas of information retrieval, electronics and opto-electronics applications. The editor wishes to thank all those involved for their courtesy and co-operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystals are partially ordered systems without a rigid, long-range structure. The study of these materials covers a wide area: chemical structure, physical properties and technical applications. Due to their dual nature — anisotropic physical properties of solids and rheological behavior of liquids — and easy response to externally applied electric, magnetic, optical and surface fields liquid crystals are of greatest potential for scientific and technological applications. The subject has come of age and has achieved the status of being a very exciting interdisciplinary field of scientific and industrial research. This book is an outgrowth of the enormous advances made during the last three decades in both our understanding of liquid crystals and our ability to use them in applications. It presents a systematic, self-contained and up-to-date overview of the structure and properties of liquid crystals. It will be of great value to graduates and research workers in condensed matter physics, chemical physics, biology, materials science, chemical and electrical engineering, and technology from a materials science and physics viewpoint of liquid crystals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has become one of the most widespread technologies for spatial light modulation in optics and photonics applications. These reflective microdisplays are composed of a high-performance silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) backplane, which controls the light-modulating properties of the liquid crystal layer. State-of-the-art LCoS microdisplays may exhibit a very small pixel pitch (below 4 μm), a very large number of pixels (resolutions larger than 4K), and high fill factors (larger than 90%). They modulate illumination sources covering the UV, visible, and far IR. LCoS are used not only as displays but also as polarization, amplitude, and phase-only spatial light modulators, where they achieve full phase modulation. Due to their excellent modulating properties and high degree of flexibility, they are found in all sorts of spatial light modulation applications, such as in LCOS-based display systems for augmented and virtual reality, true holographic displays, digital holography, diffractive optical elements, superresolution optical systems, beam-steering devices, holographic optical traps, and quantum optical computing. In order to fulfil the requirements in this extensive range of applications, specific models and characterization techniques are proposed. These devices may exhibit a number of degradation effects such as interpixel cross-talk and fringing field, and time flicker, which may also depend on the analog or digital backplane of the corresponding LCoS device. The use of appropriate characterization and compensation techniques is then necessary.

This article focuses on the nematic phases of polymorphism that include cubic thermotropic phases and blue phases. A section of the book provides an extensive discussion of the means of experimental procedures used to evaluate the spectra and the implications of the spectral parameters. A critical analysis of the influence of molecular vibration including interdependence on the average order parameters is also included. The terms nuclear relaxation, quadrupole coupling constants, chemical shielding anisotropy, molecular order, and molecular structure and conformation are explained in detail. The last article briefly discusses the actions of liquid crystal systems in the muscle and connective tissue. The book will provide valuable insights for scientists, developers of crystal displays, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the classic text incorporates the many advances in knowledge about liquid crystals that have taken place since its initial publication in 1974. Entirely new chapters describe the types and properties of liquid crystals in terms of both recently discovered phases and current insight into the nature of local order and isotropic-to-nematic transition. There is an extensive discussion of the symmetrical, macroscopic, dynamic, and defective properties of smectics and columnar phases, with emphasis on order-of-magnitude considerations, all illustrated with numerous descriptions of experimental arrangements. The final chapter is devoted to phase transitions in smectics, including the celebrated analogy between smectic A and superconductors. This new version's topicality and breadth of coverage will ensure that it remains an indispensable guide for researchers and graduate students in mechanics and engineering, and in chemical, solid state, and statistical physics.

Book excerpt: Advances in Liquid Crystals, Volume 4 is a collection of papers that deals with liquid crystal sciences, particularly the flow problems in liquid crystals, the effects of high pressure on liquid crystals, lyotropic and thermotropic polymeric liquid crystals, and the light-scattering properties of thermotropic liquid crystals. One paper reviews the continuum theory in flow problems in liquid crystals, presents theoretical predictions, and compares these with associated observations. High-pressure experiments in liquid crystals pave the way for discoveries involving pressure-induced mesomorphism in certain materials, suppression of mesophases, tricritical phase transitions, and re-entrant behavior. Another paper describes the types of macromolecular structures that have a propensity for mesomorphism — linear, conventional types of polymers, such as block copolymers and graft copolymers. Another paper examines the application of light scattering in fluctuations that happens during the liquid crystalline phases. The paper investigates the assumption that light is scattered by inhomogeneities in the dialectric constant of the medium it is passing through. This collection can prove useful for scientists in liquid crystals, and industrial researchers in the field of advanced chemistry and physics.
