Book excerpt: Highlighting recent trends that employ innovative management and conservation approaches, this volume provides an informative overview of the issues and challenges in water resources affected by climate change, such as drought, flooding, glacier changes, and overbuilt-up urban areas. Focusing on surface and groundwater related issues, the book presents solutions that include such methods as morphometric assessment, parameter estimation, long-term trend analysis, sustainability indexes, storm water management models, entropy-based measurement of long-term precipitation, and more. The volume focuses on providing a better understanding of climatic uncertainty through hydrometeorological data sets and their application in hydrological modeling. These analyses help to serve as the basis for the design of flood-control and water-usage management policies.

Book excerpt: A sub-discipline of civil engineering that is concerned with the flow and conveyance of fluids like water and sewage is known as hydraulic engineering. The force driving the movement of these fluids is the force of gravity. The principles of physical modeling, open channel hydraulics, mechanics of sediment transportation, fluid mechanics, hydrology, etc. are integral to the field of hydraulic engineering. This area of study is vital to the designing of dams, canals, bridges, channels and levees. It is also useful in the construction of hydraulic structures for sewage collection networks, water distribution networks, storm water management, sediment transport, etc. Developing strategies for the control, storage, transport, collection, regulation and use of water is an important dimension of hydraulic engineering. This book includes some of the vital pieces of work being conducted across the world, on various topics related to hydraulic engineering. It strives to provide a fair idea about this discipline and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances within this field. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike and contribute to the growth of hydraulic engineering.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling of the rainfall-runoff process is of both scientific and practical significance. Many of the currently used mathematical models of hydrologic systems were developed a genera tion ago. Much of the effort since then has focused on refining these models rather than on developing new models based on improved scientific understanding. In the past few years, however, a renewed effort has been made to improve both our fundamental understanding of hydrologic processes and to exploit technological advances in computing and remote sensing. It is against this background that the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Recent Advances in the Modeling of Hydrologic Systems was organized. The idea for holding a NATO ASI on this topic grew out of an informal discussion between one of the co-directors and Professor Francisco Nunes-Correia at a previous NATO ASI held at Tucson, Arizona in 1985. The Special Program Panel on Global Transport Mechanisms in the Geo-Sciences of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division agreed to sponsor the ASI and an organizing committee was formed. The committee comprised the co directors, Professor David S. Bowles (U.S.A.) and Professor P. Enda O'Connell (U.K.), and Professor Francisco Nunes-Correia (Portugal), Dr. Donn G. DeCoursey (U.S.A.), and Professor Ezio Todini (Italy).
