Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics, Second Edition, is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the physics of the Earth beyond what any geophysics text has provided previously. Thoroughly revised and updated, it provides fundamental and state-of-the-art discussion of all aspects of geophysics. A highlight of the second edition is a new volume on Near Surface Geophysics that discusses the role of geophysics in the exploitation and conservation of natural resources and the assessment of degradation of natural systems by pollution. Additional features include new material in the Planets and Moon, Mantle Dynamics, Core Dynamics, Crustal and Lithosphere Dynamics, Evolution of the Earth, and Geodesy volumes. New material is also presented on the uses of Earth gravity measurements. This title is essential for professionals, researchers, professors, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Geophysics and Earth system science. Comprehensive and detailed coverage of all aspects of geophysics Fundamental and state-of-the-art discussions of all research topics Integration of topics into a coherent whole

Book Synopsis Mantle Dynamics by : David Bercovici
Download or read book Mantle Dynamics written by David Bercovici and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 7000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Mantle Dynamics, Volume 7 aims to provide both a classical and state-of-the-art introduction to the methods and science of mantle dynamics, as well as survey leading order problems (both solved and unsolved) and current understanding of how the mantle works. It is organized around two themes: (1) how is mantle convection studied; and (2) what do we understand about mantle dynamics to date. The first four chapters are thus concerned with pedagogical reviews of the physics of mantle convection; laboratory studies of the fluid dynamics of convection relevant to the mantle; theoretical analysis of mantle dynamics; and numerical analysis and methods of mantle convection. The subsequent chapters concentrate on leading issues of mantle convection itself, which include the energy budget of the mantle; the upper mantle and lithosphere in and near the spreading center (mid-ocean ridge) environment; the dynamics of subducting slabs; hot spots, melting anomalies, and mantle plumes; and finally, geochemical mantle dynamics and mixing. Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic in detail Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Book Synopsis The Earth's Crust and Mantle by : Raisa Mikhaĭlovna Demenit︠s︡kai︠a︡
Download or read book The Earth's Crust and Mantle written by Raisa Mikhaĭlovna Demenit︠s︡kai︠a︡ and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The translation is a summary of complex data on the earth's crust and upper mantle. In the examination of the data on the various regions of the terrestrial globe (characteristics of the gravity, magnetic, seismic, thermal and electric fields of the earth) and the comparison between them and the structure of the crust, the author reveals the specific features of the different geological structures and determines the diagnostic significance of the geophysical data. Much attention is given to the crustal structure of the oceanic areas. A description of the general characteristics of the relief and the physical properties of the upper mantle is given in the last section of the book, where the physical map of the upper mantle is given in the last section of the book, where the physical map of the upper mantle is presented. In conclusion, a review is given of the projects of ultradeep scientific boring in the Pacific ocean, territory of the USSR, Japan and Canada. (Author).
Book Synopsis Anatomy of Seismograms by : O. Kulhánek
Download or read book Anatomy of Seismograms written by O. Kulhánek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequent updating of existing interpretation codes and routines is a prerequisite for modern seismogram interpretation and research. The primary goal of this book is to present in a rather tutorial form all the necessary information and techniques pertinent to essential seismogram interpretation. The treatment is descriptive rather then mathematical, and emphasis is placed on practical aspects, especially for the benefit of students and junior seismogram interpreters affiliated to seismographic stations and observatories. Those workers more knowledgeable in seismology, and curious enough in the detailed deciphering of seismogram peculiarities, will also find the presentation useful. The book is divided into two parts: a verbal description (Chapters 1-6) and a collection of 55 plates (Chapter 7) with interpretations. The verbal description explains in a rather elementary form the most fundamental physical phenomena relevant to seismogram appearance. The collection of plates exhibits a large variety of seismogram examples, and the corresponding interpretations cover different seismic sources (tectonic and volcanic earthquakes, underground explosions, cavity collapse, sonic booms), wave types, epicentral distances, focal depths and recording instruments (analog, digital, short- and long-period, broad band). The book compliments older manuals in that both analog and digital records are considered. Seismograms from more traditional narrow-band as well as from modern, broad-band instruments are displayed. Tectonic and volcanic earthquakes are represented, and the exhibited seismograms form a worldwide collection of records acquired from seismographic stations located in North and Central America, Asia, Europe and New Zealand, i.e. in various geological and tectonic environments. Terminology and usage of definition does vary among agencies in different parts of the world; that used in this book is common to Europe.
