EEWC aims at addressing the challenges that modern and complex enterprises are facing in a rapidly changing world. The participants of the working conference share a belief that dealing with these challenges requires rigorous and scientific solutions, focusing on the design and engineering of enterprises. The goal of EEWC is to stimulate interaction between the different stakeholders, scientists as well as practitioners, interested in making Enterprise Engineering a reality. The 12 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected out of 34 submissions. The topics of the presented papers allowed for active participation in interesting discussions and exchange of ideas and stimulated future cooperation among the participants. This made EEWC a real working conference contributing to the further development of Enterprise Engineering as a mature discipline. Topics covered include: Organization Implementation; Value and Co-Creation; Evolvability; Modelling, Patterns and Viability; and Foundations of Enterprise Engineering.

In this digital age, business processes are scattered not only throu- out the labyrinth of their own enterprises, but also across di?erent enterprises, and even beyond the national boundaries. An evidence of this is the gr- ing phenomenon of business process outsourcing. Increasing competition, higher customer demands, and emerging technologies require swift adaptation to the changes. To understand, design, and engineer a modern enterprise (or an enterprise network) and its interwoven business processes, an engineering and systematic approach based on sound and rigorous theories and methodologies is necessary. Along with that, a paradigmshift seems to be needed for addressing these issues adequately. An appealing candidate is to look at an enterprise and its business processes as a social system. In its social setting, an enterprise and its bu- ness processes represent actors with certain authorities and assigned roles, who assume certain responsibilities in order to provide a service to its environment. The need for this paradigm shift along with the complexity and agility of modern enterprises, gives inspiration for the emerging discipline of Enterprise Engineering. For the study of this socio-technical phenomenon, the prominent tools ofModeling andSimulation play a signi?cant role. Both (conceptual) m- eling and simulationare widely used for understanding,analyzing,andengine- ing an enterprise (its organization and business processes).

Future enterprises will therefore have to operate in an ever more dynamic and global environment. They need to be more agile, more adaptive, and more transparent. In addition, they will be held more publicly accountable for every e?ect they produce. These challenges are traditionally addressed by black-box thinking-based knowledge, i.e., knowledge concerning the function and the behavior of ent- prises, as contained in the organizational sciences. Such knowledge is su?cient, and perfectly adequate, for managing an enterprise (within the range of c- trol). However, it is de?nitely inadequate for changing an enterprise. In order to bring about changes, white-box-based knowledge is needed, i.e., knowledge concerning the construction and the operation of enterprises. Developing and applying such knowledge requires no less than a paradigm shift in our thi- ing about enterprises, since the organizational sciences are dominantly oriented toward organizational behavior, based on black-box thinking.

Book excerpt: The integration of AI with software is an essential enabler for science and the new economy, creating new markets and opportunities for a more reliable, flexible and robust society. Current software methodologies, tools and techniques often fall short of expectations, however, and much software remains insufficiently robust and reliable for a constantly changing and evolving market. This book presents 54 papers delivered at the 20th edition of the International Conference on New Trends in Intelligent Software Methodology Tools, and Techniques (SoMeT_21), held in Cancun, Mexico, from 21–23 September 2021. The aim of the conference was to capture the essence of a new state-of-the-art in software science and its supporting technology and to identify the challenges that such a technology will need to master, and this book explores the new trends and theories illuminating the direction of development in this field as it heads towards a transformation in the role of software and science integration in tomorrow’s global information society. The 54 revised papers were selected for publication by means of a rigorous review process involving 3 or 4 reviewers for each paper, followed by selection by the SoMeT_21 international reviewing committee. The book is divided into 9 chapters, classified by paper topic and relevance to the chapter theme. Covering topics ranging from research practices, techniques and methodologies to proposing and reporting on the solutions required by global business, the book offers an opportunity for the software science community to consider where they are today and where they are headed in the future.

Enterprise design and engineering aims to take an integrative and engineering-oriented perspective to enterprise development management. As such, it considers enterprises as purposefully designed systems where all relevant aspects should be designed in coherence. The new scope of EDEWC reflects the rapid increase in digitization of enterprises in the last decade. This has resulted in a substantial change in the nature and structure of enterprises, which was the main focus of EDEWC 2023. The 5 full papers and 2 short papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 15 submissions.

Book excerpt: This book is positioned as a rst in a series of books on enterprise architecture needed for a Master of Enterprise Architecture program, and is targeted both at university students and practitioners with a drive to increase their understanding of these elds. As an introductory book, this book aims to explore the concept of enterprise architecture. At rst glance, writing such an introductory book might seem as a straight forward task of setting up a structure and lling in “the blanks. ” However, writing this book turned out to be a pleasant journey of discovery. Based on our past experiences, each of us had a clear understanding of enterprise architecture, based on several years of experience and insight in the eld. However, when we started writing this book, and each of us exposed our individual understandings, it became apparent that our understanding of the eld differed in several ways. This prompted several discussions leading to an abundance of new insights. Without exception, thesediscussionstookplaceina pleasantandopenatmosphere, fueledbyourshared driveforunderstandingandincreasedinsight. Wearenowevenmoreconvincedthan before, that the eld enterprise architecture is a true multi-disciplinary profession. In the resulting book, we would like to share our insights, while also hoping to continue our discussions, now also involving you as a reader. We also realise that the journey is still far from complete. While this introductory book provides an overview of the eld of enterprise architecture from the perspective of our insights, many aspects need further re nement.
