The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classification, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well. We want to thank all the contributors of this fifth volume for their research works and their interests in the development of DSmT, and the belief functions. We are grateful as well to other colleagues for encouraging us to edit this fifth volume, and for sharing with us several ideas and for their questions and comments on DSmT through the years. In this regard, different models have been proposed, mainly in flat peer-to-peer networks, in which exchanging information efficiently is a key aspect due to scarce resources. However, little research has been conducted on information quality metrics for cyber-physical scenarios. In this paper, we propose an information quality metric and show its application to an information fusion model. It is a “model-oriented quality metric” since it allows non-predefined variants on its configuration depending on the application domain. The model was tested on several simulations using open datasets. The results obtained in the performance of the model confirm the validity of the information quality metric, proposed in this paper, on which the model is based. The model may have a wide variety of applications such as mobile recommendation or decision making in critical environments (emergencies, war, and so on).

Book excerpt: This work proposes the multilayered information fusion system MACRO (multilayer attribute-based conflict-reducing observation) and the μBalTLCS (fuzzified balanced two-layer conflict solving) fusion algorithm to reduce the impact of conflicts on the fusion result. In addition, a sensor defect detection method, which is based on the continuous monitoring of sensor reliabilities, is presented. The performances of the contributions are shown by their evaluation in the scope of both a publicly available data set and a machine condition monitoring application under laboratory conditions. Here, the MACRO system yields the best results compared to state-of-the-art fusion mechanisms.

Book excerpt: The newly introduced theories, proposed as extensions of the fuzzy theory, such as the Neutrosophic, Pythagorean, Spherical, Picture, Cubic theories, and their numerous hybrid forms, are criticized by the authors of [1]. In this paper we respond to their critics with respect to the neutrosophic theories and show that the DST, that they want to replace the A-IFS with, has many flaws. Their misunderstanding, with respect to the partial and total independence of the neutrosophic components, is that in the framework of the neutrosophic theories we deal with a MultiVariate Truth-Value (truth upon many independent random variables) as in our real-life world, not with a UniVariate Truth-Value (truth upon only one random variable) as they believe. About the membership degrees outside of the interval [0, 1], which are now in the arXiv and HAL mainstream, it is normal that somebody who over-works (works overtime) to have an over-membership (i.e., membership degree above 1) to be distinguished from those who do not work overtime (whose membership degree is between 0 and 1). And, similarly, a negative employee (that who does only damages to the company) to have a negative membership (i.e., membership degree below 0) in order to distinguish him from the positive employees (those whose membership degree is above 0). There are elementary practical applications in this paper that allow us to think out of box (in this case the box is the interval [0, 1]).
