Such a system could adaptively make a trade-off between controlling the longitudinal, lateral, and rotational dynamics of the vehicle in such a way that the risk of collision is minimized. To support this development, the main aim of this licentiate thesis is to provide new insights into the optimal behavior for autonomous vehicles in safety-critical situations. The knowledge gained have the potential to be used in future vehicle control systems, which can perform maneuvers at-the-limit of vehicle capabilities. Stability control of a vehicle in autonomous safety-critical at-the-limit maneuvers is analyzed by the use of optimal control. Since analytical solutions of the studied optimal control problems are intractable, they are discretized and solved numerically. A formulation of an optimization criterion depending on a single interpolation parameter is introduced, which results in a continuous family of optimal coordinated steering and braking patterns. This formulation provides several new insights into the relation between different braking patterns for vehicles in at-the-limit maneuvers. The braking patterns bridge the gap between optimal lane-keeping control and optimal yaw control, and have the potential to be used for future active-safety systems that can adapt the level of braking to the situation at hand. A new illustration named attainable force volumes is introduced, which effectively shows how the trajectory of a vehicle maneuver relates to the attainable forces over the duration of the maneuver. It is shown that the optimal behavior develops on the boundary surface of the attainable force volume. Applied to lane-keeping control, this indicates a set of control principles similar to those analytically obtained for friction-limited particle models in earlier research, but is shown to result in vehicle behavior close to the globally optimal solution also for more complex models and scenarios.

Production driver assistance systems such as electronic stability control (ESC) have been shown to be highly effective in preventing many of these automotive crashes, yet these systems rely on a sensor suite that yields limited information about the road conditions and vehicle motion. Furthermore, ESC systems rely on gains and thresholds that are tuned to yield good performance without feeling overly restrictive to the driver. This dissertation presents an alternative approach to providing stabilization assistance to the driver which leverages additional information about the vehicle and road that may be obtained with advanced estimation techniques. This new approach is based on well-known and robust vehicle models and utilizes phase plane analysis techniques to describe the limits of stable vehicle handling, alleviating the need for hand tuning of gains and thresholds. The resulting state space within the computed handling boundaries is referred to as a safe handling envelope. In addition to the boundaries being straightforward to calculate, this approach has the benefit of offering a way for the designer of the system to directly adjust the controller to accomodate the preferences of different drivers. A model predictive control structure capable of keeping the vehicle within the safe handling boundaries is the final component of the envelope control system. This dissertation presents the design of a controller that is capable of smoothly and progressively augmenting the driver steering input to enforce the boundaries of the envelope. The model predictive control formulation provides a method for making trade-offs between enforcing the boundaries of the envelope, minimizing disruptive interventions, and tracking the driver's intended trajectory. Experiments with a steer-by-wire test vehicle demonstrate that the model predictive envelope control system is capable of operating in conjunction with a human driver to prevent loss of control of the vehicle while yielding a predictable vehicle trajectory. These experiments considered both the ideal case of state information from a GPS/INS system and an a priori friction estimate as well as a real-world implementation estimating the vehicle states and friction coefficient from steering effort and inertial sensors. Results from the experiments demonstrated a controller that is tolerant of vehicle and tire parameterization errors and works well over a wide range of conditions. When real time sensing of the states and friction properties is enabled, the results show that coupling of the controller and estimator is possible and the model predictive control structure provides a mechanism for minimizing undesirable coupled dynamics through tuning of intuitive controller parameters. The model predictive control structure presented in this dissertation may also be considered as a general framework for vehicle control in conjunction with a human driver. The structure utilized for envelope control may also be used to restrict other vehicle states for safety and stability. Results are presented in this dissertation to show that a model predictive controller can coordinate a secondary actuator to alter the planar states and reduce the energy transferred into the roll modes of the vehicle. The systematic approach to vehicle stabilization presented in this dissertation has the potential to improve the design methodology for future systems and form the basis for the inclusion of more advanced functions as sensing and computing capabilities improve. The envelope control system presented here offers the opportunity to advance the state of the art in stabilization assistance and provides a way to help drivers of all skill levels maintain control of their vehicle.

It first started with antilock brake systems (ABS) that prevented loss of steering control due to wheels locking up with hard braking or low friction. Vehicle dynamics control further developed to include traction control: a system that optimally distributes tractive forces and prevents excessive wheel slip. The most recent developments have been in the area of electronic stability control (ESC). As vehicle technology has evolved over the years and ABS and ESC are now becoming standard on most vehicles, not only automobile manufacturers but even governments and regulation bodies have programs dedicated to ensure standards and understand limitations of these systems. As a result, efforts have been made to develop testing systems and test maneuvers to quantify dynamic properties. This research focuses on studying standard maneuvers and developing new strategies to evaluate and rate the performance of modern vehicles equipped with advanced vehicle dynamic control systems. Another significant development of the last decade is autonomous (or unmanned) vehicles. An important application of autonomous vehicles is automated test drivers, which are systems that replace human drivers in vehicle dynamic testing. This increases the reliability and repeatability of test maneuvers, which is imperative for dependable results in some specialized maneuvers. Most vehicle dynamic tests involve precise actuation of steering wheel or brake/throttle pedals. Steering controllers and braking robots are designed to do just that. One such system designed by SEA, Ltd and used extensively by OSU researchers, has been demonstrated to perform various standard tests accurately for a wide range of vehicles and is also used by various organizations worldwide. In this research the areas of vehicle dynamics control and autonomous vehicles come together; the automated test driver is developed to execute path-following maneuvers to evaluate the performance of vehicle dynamics controllers, including those used in ESC, in evasive driving situations. During evasive maneuvers the tire forces are no longer a linear function of slip angles and the vehicle response is nonlinear and potentially unstable, a condition which the active stability systems are designed to mitigate. The definition of understeer gradient in the linear-range does not lend itself to analysis of nonlinear-range dynamics. Another focus of this research is to assess stability and controllability based on estimation of tire forces. A vehicle observer is designed for the purpose of detecting and measuring understeer and oversteer in dynamic maneuvers. The method can be used to benchmark a vehicle regardless of passive or active control. As an extension of the autonomous steering control problem, this project involves the study of application of active steering for vehicle stability control. Control algorithms are developed that use the information from tire force estimator and driver intent models to yield linearized and predictable vehicle lateral response by an active steering system. This research brings together the development of an automated test driver, active vehicle motion control systems and testing for dynamic stability by using tire force estimation.
