Book excerpt: This book presents the investigative work on an advanced video coder based on the structure of a classical predictive coding scheme, substituting two basic components: a) motion prediction is made with triangle meshes instead of blocks; b) transform coding is realized with discrete wavelet transform instead of DCT. These parts have been investigated separately by many scientists but never before in combination. Within this framework, the author investigated the individual processing of arbitrarily shaped regions with the aim of preferential coding. Here, different types of regions were considered: pre-segmented objects, and regions created with help of the triangle mesh. The mesh regions extract skin-colored areas, or those with a high prediction error to code them with preference in order to achieve locally higher subjective qualities. Results show, that the combination of mesh-based motion prediction and wavelet transform yields better subjective and objective image coding quality than either of them in combination with a block-based technique.

It investigates linearly combined motion comp- sated signals and generalizes the well known superposition for bidirectional prediction in B-pictures. The number of superimposed signals and the sel- tion of reference pictures will be important aspects of the discussion. The application oriented part of the book employs this concept to the well known ITU-T Recommendation H.263 and continues with the improvements by superimposed motion-compensated signals for the emerging ITU-T R- ommendation H.264 and ISO/IEC MPEG-4 (Part 10). In addition, it discusses a new approach for wavelet-based video coding. This technology is currently investigated by MPEG to develop a new video compression standard for the mid-term future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Driven by new multimedia applications and the growing demand for more flexible and efficient transmission of video, a new approach to video coding has been recently proposed as an alternative to classical hybrid schemes. Instead of sequential frame-based predictive processing, the new approach is based on spatio-temporal 3D transforms, open-loop non-predictive processing, and embedded quantization and coding. This thesis investigates motion modeling for this new coding environment, as well as the impact of such modeling on both coder design and performance. The first aspect of this thesis deals with video coding based on 3D discrete cosine transform (DCT). We analyze 3D DCT spectrum properties of a globally translating image and show how to use its characteristic footprint for fast and efficient video coding. Previous approaches to 3D DCT video coding have lead to rather modest compression gains due to a limited use of motion characteristics in the transform domain. We develop a coefficient scanning order that adapts to motion, unlike the fixed zig-zag scanning of JPEG. We combine this adaptive scanning with a new 3D quantization model to design a low-complexity 3D DCT video coder. The new coder consistently outperforms MPEG-2 both subjectively and objectively (by more than 1.5 dB) at about 25% reduced complexity, while approaching the performance of MPEG-4 (within 0.8 dB) at less than half computational complexity. The second aspect of this thesis involves the role of motion in emerging video coders based on 3D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF). Motion invertibility, central to the optimality of lifted MCTF implementation, is first investigated. We introduce a metric for invertibility error between two motion fields. We develop advanced motion inversion methods and demonstrate their effectiveness in improving the update lifting step. Experimental results confirm that a better motion inversion, quantified by lower invertibility error, leads to an increase in coding gain up to 0.5 dB over simpler inversion techniques. We propose a new method for occlusion-aware modeling and estimation of motion fields and use it to create an adaptive 3D DWT coding structure. Implicit modeling of occluded/uncovered areas, combined with the use of longer wavelet kernels, improves both the prediction and update lifting steps and results in the overall compression gain of up to 1 dB over a non-adaptive coder.

In the framework of video coding, it is combined with motion compensation in order to exploit the spatio temporal correlation of image sequences along the motion trajectory. It then achieves one of the most important compression factors of a video coder. By dividing each frame into rectangular blocks, motion vectors are obtained via the block matching algorithms (BMA). The full search algorithm (FS) is a brute force BMA. It searches all possible locations inside the search window in the reference frame to provide an optimal solution. However, its high computational complexity makes it often not suitable for real-time implementation. Many fast but sub-optimal algorithms are introduced to improve the performance of video coders. The present book analyses three prospects of improving the quality of existing video coding schemes. Namely, one at a time optimization, adaptive search stagey and feature domain based criteria.

Book excerpt: This thesis, we address the use of deformable meshes for modeling motion in video sequences. A 3-D Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) coder which uses motion compensated lifting is used as the framework. Motion invertibility is an important requirement for this framework and the suitability of using meshes over traditional block-based Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation (ME/MC) techniques is demonstrated. The experimental results of our new method show good gains in both subjective and objective video quality when compared to block-based or regular mesh based approaches. The algorithm is incorporated into two commonly used Motion Com pensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) frameworks, the Haar and the 5/3 wavelet transform and performance is consistent under both methods. The generality of this approach allows its use with other video encoding frameworks effectively with minimal changes. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the successful MPEG-2 standard, MPEG-4 Visual is enabling a new wave of multimedia applications from Internet video streaming to mobile video conferencing. The new H.264 ‘Advanced Video Coding’ standard promises impressive compression performance and is gaining support from developers and manufacturers. The first book to cover H.264 in technical detail, this unique resource takes an application-based approach to the two standards and the coding concepts that underpin them. Presents a practical, step-by-step, guide to the MPEG-4 Visual and H.264 standards for video compression. Introduces the basic concepts of digital video and covers essential background material required for an understanding of both standards. Provides side-by-side performance comparisons of MPEG-4 Visual and H.264 and advice on how to approach and interpret them to ensure conformance. Examines the way that the standards have been shaped and developed, discussing the composition and procedures of the VCEG and MPEG standardisation groups. Focussing on compression tools and profiles for practical multimedia applications, this book ‘decodes’ the standards, enabling developers, researchers, engineers and students to rapidly get to grips with both H.264 and MPEG-4 Visual. Dr Iain Richardson leads the Image Communication Technology research group at the Robert Gordon University in Scotland and is the author of over 40 research papers and two previous books on video compression technology.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, a fully scalable video coding system is proposed. This system achieves full temporal, resolution, and fidelity scalability by combining mesh-based motion-compensated temporal filtering, multihypothesis motion compensation, and an embedded 3D wavelet-coefficient coder. The first major contribution of this work is the introduction of the redundant-wavelet multihypothesis paradigm into motion-compensated temporal filtering, which is achieved by deploying temporal filtering in the domain of a spatially redundant wavelet transform. A regular triangle mesh is used to track motion between frames, and an affine transform between mesh triangles implements motion compensation within a lifting-based temporal transform. Experimental results reveal that the incorporation of redundant-wavelet multihypothesis into mesh-based motion-compensated temporal filtering significantly improves the rate-distortion performance of the scalable coder. The second major contribution is the introduction of a sliding-window implementation of motion-compensated temporal filtering such that video sequences of arbitrarily length may be temporally filtered using a finite-length frame buffer without suffering from severe degradation at buffer boundaries. Finally, as a third major contribution, a novel 3D coder is designed for the coding of the 3D volume of coefficients resulting from the redundant-wavelet based temporal filtering. This coder employs an explicit estimate of the probability of coefficient significance to drive a nonadaptive arithmetic coder, resulting in a simple software implementation. Additionally, the coder offers the possibility of a high degree of vectorization particularly well suited to the data-parallel capabilities of modern general-purpose processors or customized hardware. Results show that the proposed coder yields nearly the same rate-distortion performance as a more complicated coefficient coder considered to be state of the art.
