Book excerpt: Gastroenterology is one of the branches of medicine that can profit most from modem technology, whether this involves the advances in diagnostic instrumentation, in data and image processing and management, or in computer applications like expert systems. To evaluate current status of imaging, computerization, and expert systems in gastroenterology, a group of clinical researchers and computer experts met in Bologna, Italy, for several days' discussion. The presentations at this symposium are introduced in this volume, which we believe to be a useful contribution to a specialization of great importance for health care as a whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging technologies are the cornerstone in the diagnosis and staging of benign and malignant lesions in the liver and pancreas. Although the methods are partly competing, they often need to be used in a complementary way in order to obtain optimal results for decision making. The introduction of new and refined non-invasive imaging technologies has lately led to a major progress in the diagnostic approach to diseases of the digestive system. For example, this is the case with echo-enhanced sonography: This technique is based on the property of microbubbles to resonate and emit harmonic waves in an ultrasound field. The initial method, defined as 'second harmonic imaging', was limited by the incapacity to separate the signals obtained from the bubbles and the tissue texture. This procedure has been replaced by the pulse inversion imaging technique which now gives a much better picture quality, allowing to depict the vascularization pattern of distinct lesions in the liver and pancreas. Similarly, the performance of other key imaging modalities such as CT-scan, magnetic resonance imaging, Doppler sonography and endosonography has been improved. Clinicians seeking current information on modern imaging modalities for diagnosis, differentiation and staging of gastrointestinal diseases will find this publication very useful.

This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical students and junior doctors are an integral part of the healthcare system. On an academic gastroenterology service, they often initially evaluate the patients that are then staffed by the consulting physician. Like all clinical specialties, the acquisition of medical knowledge is required to gain expertise. There are several resources such as textbooks and evidence-based articles that are available for this purpose. Inspired from patient care, this book offers a fresh approach to clinical teaching. 50 Gastrointestinal Cases and Associated Imaging is a different kind of book. It encompasses a gamut of cases for which gastroenterologists are commonly consulted for in the hospital and outpatient setting. Each case is presented from initial history and workup including imaging (various modalities including endoscopy), followed by a brief discussion on management. Questions are presented to the reader in each case followed by an answer. Since each case is unique, the pertinent teaching points are tested in a question format within the case narrative. Similar to real-life scenarios, this helps the reader to retain the most important information. Why buy this book? Unlike listing facts as most review books do, teaching points are integrated into realistic clinical cases. Medical students to residents/registrars in internal medicine, emergency medicine, GI medicine, radiology and surgery would benefit from this book alike. Secondary audiences will include nurses and general practitioners who want to understand the presentation of common GI cases and associated imaging. Moreover, it could also be potentially used as a training tool – a valuable educational resource for senior colleagues who enjoy teaching. Finally, this book would make an excellent prerequisite prior to starting any gastroenterology rotation.

Book excerpt: Surgery has traditionally been the standard of care for the treatment of neoplastic lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. With advances in endoscopic resection techniques, there has been a paradigm shift in how to approach many of these precancerous and early cancerous lesions. Potential advantages of endoscopic resection include its minimally invasiveness which often translates into quicker patient recovery. In recent years, there have been major strides in safety and efficacy of minimally invasive endoscopic approaches with ongoing advances in therapeutic endoscopy. Advanced Techniques for Endoscopic Resection in the GI Tract by Drs. Peter V. Draganov, Takuji Gotoda, and Dennis J. Yang provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of advanced endoscopic techniques for the evaluation and resection in the gastrointestinal tract. Each chapter in the book addresses specific topics such as: endoscopic evaluation of lesions technical aspects of the procedure management of adverse events post-procedural care and follow-up Advanced Techniques for Endoscopic Resection in the GI Tract provides a comprehensive review of all the different aspects of advanced endoscopic resection in the gastrointestinal tract which makes it ideal for interventional GI endoscopists and general gastroenterologists, as well as surgeons.
