Book excerpt: A practical review of state-of-the-art non-contiguous multicarrier technologies that are revolutionizing how data is transmitted, received, and processed This book addresses the advantages and the limitations of modern multicarrier technologies and how to meet the challenges they pose using non-contiguous multicarrier technologies and novel algorithms that enhance spectral efficiency, interference robustness, and reception performance. It explores techniques using non-contiguous subcarriers which allow for flexible spectrum aggregation while achieving high spectral efficiency and flexible transmission and reception at lower OSI layers. These include non-contiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM), its enhanced version, non-contiguous filter-bank-based multicarrier (NC-FBMC), and generalized multicarrier. Following an overview of current multicarrier technologies for radio communication, the authors examine particular properties of these technologies that allow for more efficient usage within key directions of 5G. They examine the principles of NC-OFDM and discuss efficient transmitter and receiver design. They present the principles of FBMC modulation and discuss key challenges for FBMC communications while comparing performance results with traditional OFDM. They move on from there to a fascinating discussion of GMC modulation within which they clearly demonstrate how that technology encompasses all of the advantages of previously discussed techniques, as well as all imaginable multi- and single-carrier waveforms. Addresses the problems and limitations of current multicarrier technologies (OFDM) Describes innovative techniques using non-contiguous multicarrier waveforms as well as filter-band based and generalized multicarrier waveforms Provides a thorough review of the practical limitations and solutions for evolving and breakthrough 5G communication technologies Explores the future outlook for non-contiguous multicarrier technologies as regards their greater industrial realization, hardware practicality, and other challenges Advanced Multicarrier Technologies for Future Radio Communication: 5G and Beyondis an indispensable working resource fortelecommunication engineers, researchers and academics, as well as graduate and post-graduate students of telecommunications. At the same time, it provides a fascinating look at the shape of things to come for telecommunication industry executives, telecom operators, regulators, policy makers, and economists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HF radio provides a low-cost, long-range communications alternative to satellite communication (SATCOM). In the polar environment, however, the frequent occurrence of dense sporadic E layers during summer in high-sunspot periods can prevent propagation in the HF band for the desired communications ranges. During solar storms, intense radiation may induce significant D-region absorption which further reduces the utility of HF radio. These phenomena cannot be defeated by the use of automatic link establishment (ALE) HF radio equipment because of the broadband nature of these effects. The use of VHF communication techniques, such as meteor scatter, provide a viable supplement to maintain connectivity when normal ALE HF radio is ineffective. This study combines the analysis of Scott Base Ionosonde data with computer predictions using A Stand- Alone Prediction Program (ASAPS) from the Australian Radio Prediction Service and IONCAP from the Institute for Telecommunications of the U.S. Department of Commerce to quantify the possibility of HF communications and suggest suitable radio system design parameters. Similarly, predictions of meteor burst (MF) link performance are provided for comparison with available measurements so that comparisons may be performed with actual link operations. Finally, an HF/VHF radio system design is envisioned to meet polar communications requirements and follow-on work to develop and verify design details is recommended. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rockwell Collins SELSCAN adaptive high-frequency (HF) radio system, using an Air Force AN/ARC-190 transceiver, was operated over a 2615-km temperate latitude path for 24 hours. Propagation was monitored by an FMCW chirp oblique sounder. Voice and data transmissions were used to assess the quality of the selected channels. The SELSCAN always found a usable channel, and usually a very good one, even when propagation was limited to a small range of frequencies. A parallel effort to develop a test bed for experimentation with alternative probing waveforms is described. Results are incomplete because of difficulties with equipment and software. A theoretical analysis of probing waveforms for use with adaptive HF systems is presented. Finally, some recommendations are made for the application of adaptive HF. Keywords include: Adaptive High-Frequency Radio, HF Radio Communications, AHF, Oblique Ionograms, and SELSCAN.
