Book excerpt: This comprehensive resource explains how network application engineers benefit from store-and-forward protocols. It reviews the motivation and design of delay tolerant networks (DTNs) and presents a series of design patterns, with examples, for developing and deploying delay-tolerant applications. The rationale for delay-tolerant applications as an evolution of standard solutions to current terrestrial internet networking challenges is presented. Similarities between internet architectures and DTN features are described, along with an overview of the history of DTNs, the architecture defining modern DTNs, and the Bundle Protocol transport mechanism. The book identifies emerging, advanced networking concepts that require delay tolerance and presents network design patterns as a general way of reasoning about these concepts. Delay-tolerance is explained, and how it can be used to cache content in a network, perform open-loop autonomous control of nodes, annotate messages to reduce traffic needs, perform distributed error correction, implement in-network data fusion, and operationalize regional administration. The book discusses special considerations unique to DTNs that must be accommodated by delay-tolerant applications, examples of using these patterns, and a case study for their deployment.

Satellites are used to transmit television and radio signals to a large geographical area, allowing people to access a wide range of programming regardless of their location. They are used to provide internet access to remote or underserved areas that may not have access to traditional terrestrial infrastructure. Satellites can be used to provide telephone service, especially in areas with limited or no access to traditional telephone networks. GPS and other navigation systems to determine the location of vehicles, ships, and aircraft work only with the help of navigational satellites. Satellites are used for a variety of military and government purposes, such as intelligence gathering, communication, and surveillance. It plays a significant role in communication by connecting people and businesses around the world and enabling a wide range of important services.

This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA enterprises have growing needs for an advanced, integrated, communications infrastructure that will satisfy the capabilities needed for multiple human, robotic and scientific missions beyond 2015. Furthermore, the reliable, multipoint infrastructure is required to provide continuous, maximum coverage of areas of concentrated activities, such as around Earth and in the vicinity of the Moon or Mars, with access made available on demand of the human or robotic user. As a first step, the definitions of NASA's future space communications and networking architectures are underway. Architectures that describe the communications and networking needed between the nodal regions consisting of Earth, Moon, Lagrange points, Mars, and the places of interest within the inner and outer solar system have been laid out. These architectures will need the modular flexibility that must be included in the communication and networking technologies to enable the infrastructure to grow in capability with time and to transform from supporting robotic missions in the solar system to supporting human ventures to Mars, Jupiter, Jupiter's moons, and beyond. The protocol-based networking capability seamlessly connects the backbone, access, inter-spacecraft and proximity network elements of the architectures employed in the infrastructure. In this paper, we present the summary of NASA's near and long term needs and capability requirements that were gathered by participative methods. We describe an integrated architecture concept and model that will enable communications for evolutionary robotic and human science missions. We then define the communication nodes, their requirements, and various options to connect them. Bhasin, Kul and Hayden, Jeffrey L. Glenn Research Center NASA/TM-2004-213074, E-14550

Book excerpt: Historically, the United States has been a world leader in aerospace endeavors in both the government and commercial sectors. A key factor in aerospace leadership is continuous development of advanced technology, which is critical to U.S. ambitions in space, including a human mission to Mars. To continue to achieve progress, NASA is currently executing a series of aeronautics and space technology programs using a roadmapping process to identify technology needs and improve the management of its technology development portfolio. NASA created a set of 14 draft technology roadmaps in 2010 to guide the development of space technologies. In 2015, NASA issued a revised set of roadmaps. A significant new aspect of the update has been the effort to assess the relevance of the technologies by listing the enabling and enhancing technologies for specific design reference missions (DRMs) from the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate and the Science Mission Directorate. NASA Space Technology Roadmaps and Priorities Revisited prioritizes new technologies in the 2015 roadmaps and recommends a methodology for conducting independent reviews of future updates to NASA's space technology roadmaps, which are expected to occur every 4 years.
