Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Biology Most adolescent boys and girls are more interested in themselves than in abstract problems. Although colleges emphasize mathematics and languages in their entrance requirements and say little about science, there has been a rapid growth in the number of sciences elected in the high schools. This is primarily due to the realization that science is more a part of the lives of pupils than other school subjects and an answer to more of their questions. Youth is more interested in making direct observations and reasoning from them than in abstract thinking. There is a concerted effort to ascertain the truth about phenomena and to find out how and why things happen. Science teaches a valid method of interpreting evidence and helps one to arrive at logical conclusions. In most secondary schools throughout the country elementary biology or general science is taught in the first or second year. There has been a growing demand for an advanced course in general biology to follow the elementary science course. This text has been written primarily to fill this need. The emphasis of the book is on problems relating to human welfare. The origin and principles of the development, structure, and functions of plants and lower animals are introduced mainly as a background for the proper understanding of human problems. An interesting and novel feature of the text is the historical treatment of many of the subjects, which gives the pupil a bird's-eye view of the entire subject without overwhelming him with unrelated facts. Teaching material is given at the end of each chapter, designed to help the pupil in organizing, in his own mind, the important principles discussed. The list of supplementary readings offers the pupil sources of information other than the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Thor is caught between titanic forces of good and evil, as Andronicus and Rafi use all of their dark sorcery to attempt to crush Thor's identity and take control of his very soul. Under their spell, Thor will have to battle a greater fight than he has ever known, as he struggles to cast off his father and free himself from their chains. Gwendolyn, with Alistair, Steffen and Aberthol, ventures deep into the Netherworld, on her quest to find Argon and free him from his magical trap. She sees him as the only hope to save Thor and to save the Ring, but the Netherworld is vast and treacherous, and even finding Argon may be a lost cause. Reece leads the Legion members as they embark on a near-impossible quest to do what has never been done before: to descend into the depths of the Canyon and find and retrieve the lost Sword. As they descend, they enter another world, filled with monsters and exotic races-all of them bent on keeping the Sword for their own purposes. Romulus, armed with his magical cloak, proceeds with his sinister plan to cross into the Ring and destroy the Shield; Kendrick, Erec, Bronson and Godfrey fight to free themselves from their betrayal; Tirus and Luanda learn what it means to be traitors and to serve Andronicus; Mycoples struggles to break free; and in a final, shocking twist, Alistair's secret is finally revealed.

After a careful second reading of my Opinions, I have been totally unable to discover a single statement that cannot be most amply sustained by the very best of evi dence, and doubt whether any fair-minded and intelligent Roman Catholic can do otherwise. So much for the history of these lectures, which are now for the first time presented in full to my readers. In most cases science has long been familiar with the facts they set forth; not so, however, I fear, the vast hosts of Catholics in this country, both laymen and clergy. So it is to them, especially, that I dedicate my labors, with the profound hope that they may read and comprehend the truths I have endeavored to convey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Biology for Students in General, Medical and Technical Courses IN this edition the general plan of the previous editions is retained but made more logical by bringing forward the chapters on plants so that the value to be derived from the evolutionary point of view can be employed in the study of the plant types discussed. The chapter on hydra is shifted for a similar reason. The section dealing with the biology of cells (chapters VIII - XI) has been entirely rearranged and extended in order that it may furnish a better foundation for the present-day conception of biology. The laboratory suggestions at the beginning of each chapter are omitted and attention is called to Laboratory Outlines by Hargitt and Hargitt which meets the needs of those wishing laboratory directions for the present edition. This book may be secured by writing directly to Professor C. W. Hargitt, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N. Y. The historical development of biology, typified in large part by the emphasis which certain great men placed first upon one aspect of living things and then upon another, affords a natural approach to our subject: Linnaeus (1707 - 17 78) emphasized the external form of organisms, while Haller (1708 - 1777) inquired into the general physiological activities of living things. These two men may be given credit for defining the two lines of study, morphology and physiology, which enter so largely into all modern courses in biology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Biology, Vol. 1 Several years ago it was our good fortune to follow as grad uate students a course of lectures and practical study in General Biology, under the direction of Professor Martin, at Johns Hop kins University. Since that time we have ever been strongly of the opinion that beginners in Biology should be introduced to the subject by some similar method, following in the main the outlines marked out by Huxley and Martin more than ten years ago. The present work thus owes its origin to the influence of the authors of the Elementary Biology, our deep indebtedness to whom we gratefully acknowledge.
