Book excerpt: By the mid-1940s. Gordon Parks had cemented his reputation as a successful photojournalist and magazine photographer, and Ralph Ellison was an established author working on his first novel, Invisible Man (1952), which would go on to become one of the most acclaimed books of the twentieth century. Less well known, however, is that their vision of racial injustices, coupled with a shared belief in the communicative power of photography, inspired collaboration on two important projects, in 1948 and 1952. Capitalizing on the growing popularity of the picture press, Parks and Ellison first joined forces on an essay titled "Harlem Is Nowhere" for '48: The Magazine of the Year. Conceived while Ellison was already three years into writing Invisible Man, this illustrated essay was centered on the Lafargue Clinic, the first nonsegregated psychiatric clinic in New York City, as a case study for the social and economic conditions in Harlem. He chose Parks to create the accompanying photographs, and during the winter months of 1948, the two roamed the streets of Harlem together, with Parks photographing under the guidance of Ellison's writing. In 1952 they worked together again, on "A Man Becomes Invisible", for the August 25 issue of Life magazine, which promoted Ellison's newly released novel. Invisible Man: Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison in Harlem focuses on these two projects, neither of which was published as originally intended, and provides an in-depth look at the authors' shared vision of black life in America, with Harlem as its nerve center.

Book Synopsis Advances in Mass Spectrometry by : R. M. Elliott
Download or read book Advances in Mass Spectrometry written by R. M. Elliott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 2 documents the proceedings of a conference on mass spectrometry held in Oxford in September 1961. This compilation is categorized into six major topics — mass spectrometry in research; mass spectrometry of inorganic compounds; instruments and techniques; theory and correlation of mass spectra; mass spectra and analysis; and ionization and dissociation. Under these major topics, parts of the papers discussed include field ionization mass spectroscopy; initial kinetic energy discrimination effects in crossed-field ion sources; mass spectrometric study of CaO and Ta; and spark source mass spectrometry as an analytical technique. The book also covers discussions on initial energy of hydrocarbon fragment ions; determination of the structure of alkaloids by mass spectrometry; and application of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to the examination of ion-molecule interactions. This volume is a useful reference to students and researchers conducting work on mass spectrometry.

Book Synopsis Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery by : L. Symon

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbiihl. Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have throughout been associated with this series. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contributions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by spe cialists in the given fields and constitute the first part of each volume.
