Though crabbing has been a mainstay of West Coast economies for decades, little information has been collected or analyzed on adult Dungeness crab movement, in general, and for the Oregon Coast, specifically. To help begin addressing this critical information gap, The Oregon Wave Energy Trust (OWET), the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission (ODCC) and Oregon Sea Grant added value to a planned baseline study conducted by H.T. Harvey and Associates. Crabs collected for the baseline study were tagged after they were measured and before they were returned to the ocean. Commercial crabbers later returned the tags, and were rewarded for collaborating in the project. Methods: Legal sized male crabs (6 1/4" carapace width) were tagged at three locations near Reedsport, Oregon, in October and November of 2009. A total of 2788 tags was deployed and crabs were recaptured in the commercial crab fishery. Tags were returned with recapture locations to Oregon Sea Grant and a $20/tag reward was provided. Results: Out of 2788 tagged crabs released, 952 crabs were recaptured and the tags returned to Oregon Sea Grant. A total of 626 tags was returned with location data of sufficient detail for analysis. The overall return rate of 34.15% is notably high for a mark-recapture study; however, this is not unreasonable because a high percentage of male crabs is harvested during each season. Additionally, a historic Oregon crab tagging study found a similar return rate. Crabs travelled distances ranging from 0.27 km to 90.68 km (Table 1). 65% of crabs traveled less than 20 km, 77.7% of crabs traveled less than 30km, and 95.5% of crabs traveled less than 50km (Figure 1). Crabs moved primarily in the alongshore direction, with minimal across shelf movement (Figure 4). See enclosed maps of recapture locations. Caveats: Because commercial crabbers target their fishing effort based on past experience, it is likely that some locations had a higher chance of being sampled than others. This sampling bias might inflate the tag recovery rate in those areas and has the potential to skew our results. That said, the tag recapture locations should not be interpreted as reflecting the distribution of fishing effort in the Reedsport study area. The distances reported here represent a minimum distance that the crab traveled. Additional tags were returned with general locations indicating that crabs may be moving as far north as Tillamook, Oregon (approximately 140 miles). It remains unknown to what degree Dungeness crab movements vary from year to year. The findings of this study should be treated as preliminary rather than definitive. Additional studies are needed to fully characterize adult Dungeness crab movements in Oregon's coastal waters."--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: Spatial and temporal genetic variation was assessed using mitochondrial DNA from adult and megalopae of Dungeness crabs, Cancer magister, from Fraser Delta in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. Megalopae were continuously sampled using light traps in one location, Coos Bay, Oregon, and compared with adults sampled across the species' range. While small-scale spatial and temporal variation were evident, there was no significant fit to the Isolation-by-Distance model when considering adult and larvae populations sampled over a coastal length of ~1700 km (Mantel r = 0.059, p = 0.289). Smaller bays showed higher genetic diversity than larger bays, contrary to typical expectations. MtDNA diversity measures (assessed by canonical correlation analysis) were correlated with bay size and depth, suggesting that hydrological patterns or fishing harvests in local areas (or a combination of both) influenced the observed genetic signature. The Dungeness crab ancestral population likely went through a historic population expansion associated with recent glacial relaxation, as evidenced by mismatch distributions and predominance of singleton haplotypes. In larval samples, we commonly observed numerous individuals of a haplotype, which suggests that families of larvae remain aggregated during dispersal. Sampled offspring revealed a low fraction of the adult gene pool (in accordance with the Hedgecock effect), yet high variability in recruitment over time. A realized long distance dispersal of larvae and the additive effects of recruitment from different sources over time may have prevented significant genetic differentiation within the C. magister range.

Book excerpt: Results of studies beginning in 1947 on the biology of the Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) in Oregon coastal waters are reported. A review is made of the history of the fishery with regard to trend of the catch by magnitude, area, and season; the development and conduct of the fishery itself; and the regulations governing the fishery. The first reported commercial crab landings in Oregon were 6,628 pounds in 1880. The fishery expanded slowly until 1933 after which the catch rose sharply to a peak of about 11 million pounds in 1943. Landings in recent years have fluctuated between 6 and 11 million pounds from a commercial fishery which is carried out along the major portion of the Oregon coast. During the period 1947-50, 6,249 tagged crabs were released in offshore and bay waters of Oregon and 34.6 percent of the tags were subsequently recovered. The average movement of 1,042 recoveries of crabs released in offshore waters, as measured by the distance from the tagging site, was 8.3 miles (range 0-133 miles) in 80 days. For crabs released within bays, 606 recoveries averaged a minimum distance traveled of 4.2 miles (range 0-81 miles). Fifty-seven percent of the recoveries of offshore releases and 84 percent of the recoveries of bay releases were made within 4 miles of the respective tagging sites. Over 90 percent of the recoveries of offshore releases were made within 6 months, although 3 crabs were out more than a year with 1 at liberty 878 days. Tagged crabs moved from offshore to bays, from bay to bay, and from bays to offshore. There was no significant difference in percentage recovery for crabs with or without missing appendages. Egg-bearing female crabs are present in offshore waters during the period October to March, inclusive. Larval crabs assumed to be C. magister were observed in offshore waters from April to July, inclusive. Considerable variation in early growth of post larval crabs was observed in laboratory experiments. The amount of growth of crabs between 6.4 and 146.0 mm., as observed by measuring them before and after molting, increases until a shoulder width of about 95 mm. is reached. The increase with each subsequent molt thereafter remains relatively constant. Macroplankton-eating fishes feed upon free swimming crab larvae. Adult crabs up to at least 114 mm. in shoulder width are preyed upon by voracious fish such as ling-cod (Ophiodon elongatus), the great marbeled sculpin (Scorpaenichthys armoratus), wolf eel (Anarrhichthys ocellatus), halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis), and some of the rock fishes of the genus Sebastodes.

Book excerpt: Among global coastal regions, the Northern California Current System (N-CCS) is already experiencing effects from ocean acidification and hypoxia during the summer, primarily due to the region's seasonal upwelling, current systems, and high productivity. Oxygen, pH, and temperature conditions are expected to become more stressful with continued fossil fuel emissions under global climate change, posing a serious threat to the region's fisheries. N-CCS fishing communities rely heavily on the economically and culturally important Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister). The fishery is currently sustainably managed, but potential negative impacts from changing ocean conditions on Dungeness crab life stages and populations could have adverse effects for the fishery and the communities that rely on it. To quantify the vulnerability of Dungeness crab life stages and populations to predicted future conditions, both model projections and empirical experiments need to be employed. A semi-quantitative, life stage-specific framework was adapted here to assess the vulnerability of Dungeness crab to low pH, low dissolved oxygen, and high temperature under present and future projected conditions in the seasonally dynamic N-CCS. This was achieved using a combination of regional ocean models, species distribution maps, larval transport models, a population matrix model, and a literature review. This multi-faceted approach revealed that crab vulnerability to the three climate stressors will increase in the future (year 2100) under the most intense emissions scenario, with vulnerability to low oxygen being the most severe to the N-CCS population overall. Increases in vulnerability were largely driven by the adult life stage, which contributes the most to population growth. Empirical experiments demonstrated that adult crab respiration rates increase exponentially with temperature, potentially making this life stage more susceptible to hypoxia in the future. Together, this work provides novel insights into the effects of changing ocean conditions on Dungeness crab populations, which may help inform fishery management strategies.|Archives and Special Collections at the Thomas J. Book excerpt: The British Columbia Dungeness crab (Metacarcinus magister) fishery is important to a diverse group of users, generating considerable value to coastal communities. While current management strategies have ensured sustainability and conservation of the species, persistently high exploitation by the commercial fishery limits access to the resource for First Nation and recreational crabbers. I evaluated the constraints on two possible management actions aimed at increasing access for recreational users. In chapter 1, I found that establishing abundance-based management using existing survey designs has potential for high use, multi-sector crab fisheries such as Burrard Inlet: provided that biases due to variable catchability are accounted for. In chapter 2, I demonstrated how discrepancies in requirements and responsibilities between the recreational and commercial sectors limit the scope of harvest rights attainable by the recreational sector. Reducing these discrepancies would help justify the changes to the management framework required to increase recreational access.

Book excerpt: The microsporidian parasite Nadelspora canceri infects Dungeness crabs, Cancer magister, along the United States Pacific Northwest coast. The prevalence and seasonal variation of N. canceri in Dungeness crabs from Alsea Bay, Oregon, are described based on examination of 2991 crabs collected at monthly intervals from October, 1991 to June, 1993. The average prevalence in monthly samples was 21.0% and ranged from 8.2% to 33.0%. No significant differences in monthly or seasonal parasite prevalence were observed. A total of 3061 Dungeness crabs was examined from an additional seven Pacific Northwest estuaries and Puget Sound to document the geographic distribution of N. canceri and the prevalence of the parasite in these locations. The estuaries sampled and the prevalences observed were: Humboldt Bay, California (14.6%), Coos Bay (10.6%), Yaquina Bay (2.0%), Tillamook Bay (41.2%), and Nehalem Bay, Oregon (14.2%), Willapa Bay (6.9%), and Grays Harbor Washington (0.44%). Dungeness crabs were examined from the Dungeness spit, Kala Point, and Mukilteo areas in Puget Sound and no infected crabs were found. A total of 9317 male Dungeness crabs> 15.9 cm carapace width (CW) captured in the commercial ocean crab fishery was examined for N. canceri and 27 (0.3%) were infected with the parasite. No infections were found in crabs smaller than 3.0 cm CW and the prevalence of infection generally increased with crab size reaching a peak of 22.2% in 14 cm CW crabs. The overall infection prevalence in male crabs (19.2%) was more than twice that of female crabs (8.0%), and of the 821 infected crabs found, 629 (76.6%) were males. The mortality of laboratory-held Dungeness crabs naturally infected with N. canceri was compared to that of uninfected crabs in two separate experiments and in both cases a significantly higher mortality was observed for infected crabs. Nadelspora canceri infections were established in both juvenile and adult Dungeness crabs that were fed parasite spores in laboratory experiments indicating that transmission is direct and intermediate hosts or vectors are not required for transmitting the parasite between hosts.

Book excerpt: The sample ratio of sublegal to legal male crabs retained in crab pots was used in calculations to predict future harvest of Dungeness crabs, Cancer magister, along the Oregon coast. Accurate predictions by this method require a sample ratio representative of the population ratio. I sampled the Oregon Dungeness crab population out of the ports of Astoria and Newport during the 1974-75 and 1975-76 crab seasons. Samples were taken with commercial crab pots modified to retain sublegal as well as legal crabs. My predictions of future harvest of Dungeness crab were inaccurate because the sample ratio was an inaccurate and biased estimator of the population ratio of sublegal to legal crabs. My results indicate that the samples obtained by my sampling gear and methods were not representative of the number of sublegal and legal crabs in the population.
