Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, the 92-metre frieze of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, one of the largest historical narratives in marble, has been made the subject of a book. The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the 'Great Trek' (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Conceptualising the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made. The book considers the active role the Monument played in the rise of Afrikaner nationalism and the development of apartheid, as well as its place in post-apartheid heritage. The frieze is unique in that it provides rare evidence of the complex processes followed in creating a major monument. Based on unpublished documents, drawings and models, these processes are unfolded step by step, from the earliest discussions of the purpose and content of the frieze, through all the stages of its design, to its shipping to post-war Italy to be copied into marble from Monte Altissimo, up to its final installation in the Monument. The book examines how visual representation transforms historical memory in what it chooses to recount, and the forms in which it is depicted. The second volume expands on the first, by investigating each of the twenty-seven scenes of the frieze in depth, providing new insights into not only the frieze, but also South Africa’s history. François van Schalkwyk of African Minds, co-publisher with De Gruyter writes: From Memory to Marble is an open access monograph in the true sense of the word. Both volumes of the digital version of the book are available in full and free of charge from the date of publication. This approach to publishing democratises access to the latest scholarly publications across the globe. At the same time, a book such as From Memory to Marble, with its unique and exquisite photographs of the frieze as well as its wealth of reproduced archival materials, demands reception of a more traditional kind, that is, on the printed page. For this reason, the book is likewise available in print as two separate volumes. The printed and digital books should not be seen as separate incarnations; each brings its own advantages, working together to extend the reach and utility of From Memory to Marble to a range of interested readers. For more material you can browse at Stanford's database "Voortrekker Monumentality: a digital archive".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Southern Africa, in the Years 1803, 1804, 1805 and 1806, Vol. 2 Three considerable rivers have their sources in the Snow Mountains, which are constantly supplied With water the whole year round from the melted snows and the rain water. Towards the south flows the Zondag's River; towards the east several small streams, which at last unite to form the great Fish River and at the foot of the mountains, on the north side, rises the sea-cow River: this flows after a while into the Orange River; and the latter, subsequent to this union, continues its course for more than a hundred miles, when it falls into the sea on the western coast. Both the other rivers run in a southerly direction - a description of them, near the mouth of each, has been given in a former part of this work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That humans originated from Africa is well-known. However, this is widely regarded as a chance outcome, dependant simply on where our common ancestor shared the land with where the great apes lived. This volume builds on from the 'Out of Africa' theory, and takes the view that it is only in Africa that the evolutionary transitions from a forest-inhabiting frugivore to savanna-dwelling meat-eater could have occurred. This book argues that the ecological circumstances that shaped these transitions are exclusive to Africa. It describes distinctive features of the ecology of Africa, with emphasis on savanna grasslands, and relates them to the evolutionary transitions linking early ape-men to modern humans. It shows how physical features of the continent, especially those derived from plate tectonics, set the foundations. This volume adequately conveys that we are here because of the distinctive features of the ecology of Africa.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Southern Africa: In the Years 1803, 1804, 1805 and 1806 The dispositions of the excellent persons in whose service I was engaged forbids me to say all that 'i could gladly say of them. From the mouth of one who owes them so much, the most truly deserved praise, the mere ex pression of the gratitude due to them, might appear too much like flattery; and there is a certain class of readers, who can discover in ever so slight a tribute of applause sufficient ground'for a suspicion of partiality, which would ill become a German writer. True it is, that in these people I love a whole nation, but I should consider it as the most unpardonable weakness were I to degrade my narrative with any thing that might have the remotest appearance of untruth in order to gratify that love and I had rather remain wholly silent than forbear to speak with the frankness and sincerity which foreigners have always found so praise-worthy in the character of my country men.' 'what renders the present work, however, one of the most pleasing undertakings of my life is, thati have never had any temptation, through ia discretion towards my benefactors, to hazard losing the recompense which posterity Will perhaps first bestow upon my undeviating adherence to truth.
