Cette méthode efficace et commode nécessite toutefois la régénération périodique du charbon saturé, régénération qui est, malheureusement, très onéreuse. L'objet de ce travail est de montrer que l'application d'un potentiel électrique à un lit de charbon actif en grains (C.A.G.) permet de faire varier in situ sa capacité d'adsorption soit pour augmenter la quantité de produit adsorbé soit, au contraire, pour effectuer une régénération partielle. Les composés organiques utilisés comme tels dans ce travail sont d'une part le chloroforme, d'autre part, quatre composés organiques : le phénol, le -naphtol, les acides benzoïque et picrique. Les trois charbons testés, de nature différentes sont le Darco mesoporeux, d'acidité moyenne, le Chemviron f 400, micro poreux, basique et le Picaflo, macro poreux et acide. Dans un premier temps, cette étude a nécessité la mise au point de l'appareillage et de la méthode expérimentale inédits au laboratoire. L'étude de l'électrosorption a ensuite permis d'étudier l'influence de quelques paramètres : potentiel imposé, nature de charbon, électrolyte support, Ph, température, vitesse de percolation, etc... pour interpréter les résultats un modèle moléculaire a été proposé. Ce modèle tient compte des groupes fonctionnels les plus remarquables dans l'électrosorption, des ions constitutifs du charbon ainsi que des irrégularités de surface.

Un des principaux objectifs de cette etude est d'examiner les eventuelles influences sur l'adsorption de differentes concentration de biomasse fixee sur charbon actif. Cette concentration a ete mesuree par une technique d'ensemencement direct du charbon actif. Les experimentations ont ete menees a l'echelle du laboratoire en reacteurs discontinus et continus. L'influence de la biomasse sur l'adsorption a ete mise en evidence par la comparaison d'experiences realisees sur des echantillons de charbon actif steriles et ensemences. Les experimentations concernent l'elimination de molecules phenoliques modeles choisies (phenol et 4-chlorophenol). Le travail experimental s'est deroule en deux parties. La premiere ayant pour objectif d'examiner l'adsorption de composes phenoliques en conditions abiotiques. Les resultats attirent l'attention, d'une part, sur l'influence des parametres du milieu (ph, temperature, force ionique) sur l'adsorption et, d'autre part, sur les relations qui existent entre les proprietes moleculaires des solutes et leur adsorption. Ces essais ont permis de choisir les conditions experimentales pour calibrer les experiences ulterieures. La deuxieme partie examine les effets d'une biomasse fixee, obtenue par ensemencement direct, sur le charbon actif sur l'elimination de solutes. Les resultats ont permis de montrer que la biomasse peut representer une resistance additionnelle au transfert des solutes. A tres court terme, la colonisation bacterienne de la surface du charbon actif peut avoir un effet negatif sur l'elimination de composes organiques. A plus long terme, l'activite biologique developpee sur le charbon actif conduit a des performances accrues d'elimination des composes organiques
