This is approximately 7 percent of the population (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 2007). Of this number, 5-10 percent is thought to have type 1 diabetes, or juvenile onset. Recent investigations worldwide have shown that as few as 1/3 of adolescents with diabetes have Hgb A1C levels (the glycosylated hemoglobin, a measure of the past 2-3 months of BG levels) less than 8 percent (Graue, Wentzel-Larson, Hanestad, & Sovik, 2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate how much parental involvement affects specific aspects of the diabetes treatment plan, how well the adolescents adhere to their treatment plan, as well as to how conflict affects this adherence. This study replicated a study that examined the relationships between these variables (Anderson et al., 2002), but this study used an older group of adolescents, with a longer disease duration to see if the results were similar. The Diabetes Family Responsibility Questionnaire (DFRQ) (Anderson, Auslander, Jung, Miller, & Santiago, 1990) and the Diabetes Family Conflict Scale (DFCS) (Hood, Butler, Anderson & Laffel, 2007; Rubin, Young-Hyman, & Peyrot, 1989) were both used in the study that is being replicated. This study also used the Self-Care Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) (LaGreca, Swales, Klemp, & Madigan, 1988).
