Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admirals of the British Navy If the Army, on the contrary, is so much under the microscope, it is largely because it has few or no mysteries. We know the rules. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. So much for the causes of our odd willingness to forego one of the chief privileges of British birthright, which is to criticise, even to belittling, all that is ours. But there is justification, too, as the state of the sea to-day testifies. Thanks to the Navy there is at this moment hardly an enemy ship at large on the surface of the waters. The Kaiser's darling ironclads are idle as painted ships upon a painted ocean: not even an ocean, a canal. Our troops in millions have crossed to the Continent. We have enough to eat. Book excerpt: Admirals Of The British Navy (Part I): In Two Parts - Part I This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

G: Admiral of the Fleet, and General of Marines Under these circumstances it may not unreason ably be asked, what new materials are now put forward - how happens it, considering the number of naval officers who write naval novels, and works on professional subjects (and many of whom write well), that a landsman should undertake the history of one of the most distinguished admirals of the British navy - and lastly, what is the extent of his acquaintance with naval matters? Without demurring to the right of these, or any such ques tions, being put, which the perusal of the work itself would best satisfy, there can be no objection to answer them briefly at once. The opening of the year 1780 presented very unfavourable prospects to Great Britain: the war in which she was engaged with her revolted colonies, and which at its commencement it was hoped would soon be terminated, had hitherto been carried on in such a manner as promised no speedy or successful termination; but this was not the only, or perhaps the principal evil to which this country was exposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Admiral Lord Anson, the Father of the British Navy, 1697-1762 To understand and fully appreciate the story of the life of any great character in history, it is necessary to throw oneself into the sur roundings of that particular time - to see the scenery as it was there, and the other characters who were on the stage at that time; and this is especially the case in the Life of Lord Anson - the Father of the British Navy, one of the greatest and most interesting characters who ever shed his in uence over our country. From his training in that splendid achieve ment, his voyage round the world, which now reads as an almost impossible romance, he learned that indomitable supremacy over all obstacles, that thoroughness of preparation which he so carefully exercised when he went to the Admiralty, and by which all the great actions of his time were rendered possible; and like all great men of action, he never talked about what he had done. To set forth the annals of the time in which the hero has existed, and to note his contact with them, is only a part of his life - the life of the man is more than his public career. It is made up of a thousand touches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy How far these pages may prove of general interest I cannot tell, but they will at least show how opposed the Navy can be to necessary re forms, involving radical departures from traditional routine; the extent to which national interests may be injured owing to conservative forces within, and without, the public services; and what injury the country may suffer from politicians interfering in technical matters, which they necessarily do not understand. It is my hope that ultimate benefit may result from an honest attempt to shed light upon matters of Vital concern to the nation by means of my personal record. In that belief, these reminiscences have been published, and I would only wish to add that nothing has been set down in malice. My intention has been not to attack persons, but to expose rather the weaknesses and defects of our administrative machinery, in so far as I had experience of it.
