Book excerpt: Studies of Adjuvants involve many scientific fields from basic research of the chemistry, through investigations into physiological effects and environmental impact, to mixture formulation and field use. These important areas are illustrated in these two volumes, which are contributions from the First International Symposium on Adjuvants for Agrochemicals, held in Brandon, Manitoba on August 5 to 7, 1986. A total of 200 participants from 19 countries met to discuss their common interest in adjuvant science, technology, and application. It is the editors hope that these volumes will stimulate interest in and promote a better understanding of the chemical, physiological, and agronomic aspects of adjuvants as they relate agrochemicals. In addition, the revisedAdjuvants for Agrochemicals: A Selected Bibliography of World Literature in the English Language will be a valuable resource for agricultural researchers and other users. We hope that adjuvant research will lead to even safer, more efficient, and more economical use of chemicals in agriculture and forestry.

Book excerpt: In recent years the importance of adjuvants for optimising the activity of agrochemicals has become increasingly recognized. This book is aimed at accumulating the current knowledge of the interactions between adjuvants, agrochemicals and target organisms. It provides results, and ideas for future research and defines new methodological, biomechanistic and systematic approaches which can be implemented to streamline research and development of formulations and adjuvant/active ingredient combinations. The book contains micrographs of leaf surfaces and spray deposits, graphical and statistical presentations, and data on the properties of adjuvants. In particular a case study is presented demonstrating the interactions possible between formulation and adjuvant types.

Book excerpt: Agrochemical products and adjuvants are of vital importance in agriculture, to protect food and fibre crops from weeds, insect pests and diseases, in order to feed and clothe the growing world population. In recent years there have been increasing pressures to produce agrochemical formulations which have a lower environmental impact and are safer in use. Enormous changes have taken place in the chemistry and technology of agrochemicals over the last twenty years or so and this book provides a timely review of the most important area of technology in the development of new products. This book covers issues around international product quality and safety standards and describes the current and likely future trends which will carry the industry forward into the next millennium. It brings together well known international experts with many years of practical experience from agrochemical companies, consultancies, academic institutions and regulatory bodies. Chemists and technologists involved in developing new or improved agrochemical formulations will find this book an essential reference in the course of their work. The book will also be of interest to those working in research and development departments of raw material suppliers, as a concise review of this important field.

Book excerpt: Herbicides are one of the most widely used groups of pesticides worldwide for controlling weedy species in agricultural and non-crop settings. Due to the extensive use of herbicides and their value in weed management, herbicide research remains crucial for ensuring continued effective use of herbicides while minimizing detrimental effects to ecosystems. Presently, a wide range of research continues to focus on the physiology of herbicide action, the environmental impact of herbicides, and safety. The authors of Herbicides, Physiology of Action, and Safety cover multiple topics concerning current valuable herbicide research.

This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our studies the contact fungicide mancozeb and the systemic herbicide glyphosate were used as model substances to elucidate the influence of leaf surface characteristics and environmental factors on rainfastness of agrochemicals. The effect of drying time, rain intensity, rain amount, interruptions of rain showers, and addition of seed oil based adjuvants (rapeseed, linseed, and soybean) differing in degree of ethoxylation were studied in detail in apple seedlings (M. domestica Borkh.). Furthermore, the involvement of surface roughness as well as amount and composition of epicuticular waxes in rainfastness of mancozeb with or without tank-mix adjuvants was examined in adaxial leaf surfaces of apple seedlings, bean seedlings (P. vulgaris L.) and kohlrabi (B. oleracea gongylodes). The interaction between rain intensity and type of linseed oil ethoxylate adjuvant (LSO 10, LSO 0903, LSO 30, and LSO 3003) on the wash-off and biological efficacy of glyphosate was investigated in lambsquarter (C. album), velvetleaf (A. theophrasti) and green foxtail (S. viridis). Light, heavy and torrential rain events with intensities of 0.5, 5, and 48 mm h-1 respectively, were simulated using a laboratory rain simulator. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. Mancozeb was washed-off easily from the leaf surface of apple seedlings due to impact of few millimeters rain, whereas a higher amount of rain caused only little additional a.i. removal. Regardless of drying time, fungicide removal from the leaves followed a hyperbolic curve. Fungicide losses after 5 mm rain reached about 90 % of the initial deposit after a drying time of 2 h, 75 % and 80 % after drying times of 4 h and 24 h, respectively. Intensity and amount of rain independently affected a.i. removal from the seedling leaves. Ten milliliters rain at 0.5 mm h-1, 5 mm h-1 and 48 mm h-1 reduced fungicide concentration of the initial deposit to 43 %, 12 % and 8 %, respectively. Equations for mancozeb removal at light, heavy and torrential rain were determined for precipitation ranges between 0 and 30 mm, and between 0 and 5 mm. Interruptions of rain showers had only little influence on rainfastness at 2 mm rain, and no effect at 5 mm precipitation.
