Book excerpt: A fast-paced account of what happens on a bridge in Lagos Nigeria in traffic, where a ruthless gang of robbers ambush a stream of cars and then demand at gunpoint from commuters their jewellery, cell phones and other valuables. A shootout between police and gangsters follows with bodies all over the place. The author Folorunso G. Makinde gives us a fascinating look into life in Nigeria today with all its violence, gangster activity and a vast amount of corruption thrown in; where taking bribes has become a way of life; which many citizens accept as the inevitable consequence of living in this bustling country, albeit with widespread violence and criminal activities. Does this all sound disturbingly familiar? Read 'On the Bridge' for yourself and draw your own conclusions!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounds of Other Shores takes an ethnographic ear to the history of transoceanic stylistic appropriation in the Swahili taarab music of the Kenyan coast. Swahili taarab, a form of sung poetry that emerged as East Africa's first mass-mediated popular music in the 1930s, is a famously cosmopolitan form, rich in audible influences from across the Indian Ocean. But the variants of the genre that emerged in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa during the twentieth century feature particularly dramatic, even flamboyant, appropriations of Indian and Arab sonic gestures and styles. Combining oral history, interpretive ethnography, and musical analysis, Sounds of Other Shores explores how Swahili-speaking Muslims in twentieth-century Mombasa derived pleasure and meaning from acts of transoceanic musical appropriation, arguing that these acts served as ways of reflecting on and mediating the complexities and contradictions associated with being "Swahili" in colonial and postcolonial Kenya. The result is a musical anthropology of Kenyan Swahili subjectivity that reframes longstanding questions about Swahili identity while contributing to broader discussions about identity and citizenship in Africa and the Indian Ocean world.

Book excerpt: A curious scheme is afoot in Blighty. Attempting to tackle spiralling levels of crime and anti-social behaviour, the government has a new solution: to dye offenders purple. For once, even journalist Eve Baxter is shocked – she’s spent years gathering the world’s weird and wacky news, but has never seen anything as loopy as this. Learning of these shamed ‘bruises on society’, the nation is agog – and divided. There’s anger and agreement, protest and debate. Oh, green and pleasant and now purple land... But still, there’s a mystery to be solved: just how do the transformations to Purpleness occur? Transfixed by clues and conspiracies, Eve wonders if this could be her route into real news. And when her friends and family are affected by the Purple scheme, she begins to investigate...

Book excerpt: Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there has been much discussion on the subject of immigration to America, including the intersection of race, culture and identity. The devastating attack had an effect, not only on Americans but, also on citizens in other countries who hope to live or visit the United States. Public discourse has produced questions and concerns, but few from a personal standpoint. Lost & Found in America is the story of an immigrant from Africa, who, after the events of September 11, 2001, gets caught up circumstances that transforms his relationships, personal well-being, and perceptions about the United States. Lost & Found in America explores the multi-faceted circumstances that immigrants face, including how they deal with racism, expectations from home, the Barack Obama phenomenon, love and romance. As immigrants grapple to understand variations of American identities, Lost & Found In America provides a lens through which the folks from Africa see and analyze events in United States and tells the unique story of how new immigrants find a sense of belonging in the American culture. Reviews "Lost & Found in America is an outstanding first novel" Dr Yvonne Seon, Founding Director Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center, Wright State University The story in this book is real, fascinating and humorous" - Dayton Weekly News
