And yet how important is this study in the life of every one. How much of evil, how much of dan ger, and how much of misery and ruin should we avoid, if we were to do so. Franklin's self-scrutiny carried him so far as to make him keep a di ary of his faults and errors. He not only rose in the morning with a de termination to do well, and restrain all of his evil pass1ons and propensities, but at night he enquired of himself whether he had done so, and wrote down every omission. In the lives and characters of most great men, we shall find that their greatness is too often sullied by some weakness or glaring faults of char acter. Few men are perfect. But we may profit as much by the faults of great men, as by their virtues. Like dark spots on a bright picture, we see them the more readily, and more deeply regret them, on account of the brightness of the picture. C., At the Appointment, and by the Request of the Euphemian Society, on the Sixth Anniversary, Sept. 17, 1845 But by far too much importance is commonly attached to the efficiency of written constitutions, and by far too much influence ascribed to the agency Of individuals in the constructions of those governments which have proved effectual and permanent. From the fact, that a people live under constitutional forms nothing can be inferred as to the spirit of the actual government. To suppose that liberty is to be found in forms, would be to confound means with ends, the shadow with the substance. Constitutions are the prescribed modes, in which it is intended, the sover eigu power should be exerted, and by which it is intended, the action of the government should be limited. But they are of use only so far as they accomplish these purposes. If they are not regarded, and the action of the government not conformed to them if those entrusted with power trample upon those sacred limitations of authority, they are so much waste paper and idle words. Under such circumstances the spirit of des potism will preside under the forms ofliberty, the very essence of despot ism consisting in the ability of rulers to disregard every obstacle to the accomplishment of their will. If constitutions are to be any thing more than mere words, they must be observed, and there must exist somewhere the power to enforce their Observance. This important function must ultimately, in all cases, devolve upon the people themselves. Everything, therefore, depends upon the people; without their cooperation, the con trivancesof the wisest legislators will be vain. Laws and constitutions, which are not dictated and sustained by a fixed and permanent public opinion, but proceed only from the brains of those who contrive them, canbe of no avail unfounded in the character of the people for, whom they are intended, they will be without the breath of life, and will exist no where except upon the paper upon which they are written. Neither then in the forms under which we live, are we to seek the essence of the liberty we enjoy, nor can we refer the success of our institutions altogether to the wisdom and foresight of those who framed our copstitutions. A short distance hence - at the point where the trail from Ninety-Six to the Keowee crossed the Cherokee boundary - stood a small Indian trading-house, known as Dewett's Corner. Hostilities had then, already, commenced between Great Britain and her Colonies. Fort Moultrie, hastily constructed of spungy logs from its immediate vicinity, and fighting under the famous crescent banner of blue, had already driven the Fleet of Sir Petee Paekek, shattered and defeated, from the harbor of Charleston, and by that heroic achievement had given renown to the Palmetto, and a proud device to the escutcheon of the embryo State. The Cherokee Indians, urged by Cameeox and other British agents, and stimulated by the hope of plunder, and of revenge for all their hoarded wrongs, real and imaginary, had, in violation of recent treaties, seized the tomahawk, crossed the border near this place, and rushed, with savage ferocity, upon the exposed inhabitants of the frontier. The occasion is fraught with the most lively interest. Age is here with its venerable crown of gray hairs'e - Middle age' with its'firm and settled vigour - fyouth, with its exuberance of l1fe and health - and Woman, with the sunshine Of her smile to illumine the Whole scene. Fond expectations have mounted, from the parent's breast, to the eye and cheek, and are there blushing, as the soft glow of electric heat upon the distant cloud. Anticipation has gone forth, like a pioneer, into'the future, and has carved out a destiny of usefulness and honor, if not of brilliancy and Splendor, for each inmate of this Institution.
