Book excerpt: The guiding principle underlying the subject matter specifically compiled in Volume 5 has been to make available to the organic chemical community a sourcebook comprehensively covering all the important &pgr;-bond-dependent transformations. Thermal, photochemical, and metal-catalyzed cycloadditions of every major type are expertly detailed by the most knowledgeable researchers in these areas. The synthetically useful electrocyclic and sigmatropic processes where alkenic centers are intimately involved in the structural change are similarly canvassed in compact detail. With added attention given to ene reactions, small-ring rearrangements, and related transition metal-associated reactions, coverage has been achieved of the full range of organic transformations directly involving the rebonding of alkenic centers. As a consequence, this volume should serve as the comprehensive sourcebook of the field for the next decade and beyond.

It is an international language, a language without dialects, a language for all time, a language that explains where we came from, what we are, and where the physical world will allow us to go. Chemical Language has great esthetic beauty and links the physical sciences to the b- logical sciences. ” from The Two Cultures: Chemistry and Biology by Arthur Kornberg (Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, 1959) Over the past two centuries, chemistry has evolved from a relatively pure disciplinary pursuit to a position of central importance in the physical and life sciences. More generally, it has p- vided the language and methodology that has unified, integrated and, indeed, molecularized the sciences, shaping our understanding of the molecular world and in so doing the direction, development and destiny of scientific research. The “language of chemistry” referred to by my former Stanford colleague is made up of atoms and bonds and their interactions. It is a s- tem of knowledge that allows us to understand structure and events at a molecular level and increasingly to use that understanding to create new knowledge and beneficial change. The words on this page, for example, are detected by the eye in a series of events, now generally understood at the molecular level.

Book excerpt: TEAN-LOUIS LUCHE A French poet of this eentury, Pierre Mae Orlan, wrote "Adventure does not exist, it is only in the mind of he who is pursuing it, and, as soon as it is at one's finger tips, it vanishes to come back to life, far away, in a different shape, at the frontiers of imagination". This sentence could be used to define the adventure that many sonochemists experienced. Most of them did not even suspect that the "laboratory trick" they were using was the first contact with a considerable amount of science. If a personal note is allowed here, it ean be interesting to mention the part played by chance in my involvement in sonochemistry. Almost 20 years ago, we had to perform an apparently simple Grignard reaetion with n-butylmagnesium bromide and geranial, but the results were repeatedly unsatisfactory. The one-pot Barbier technique was attempted, also without success. From my studies at the University, I imagined that the failure of the latter reaction could be caused by a common phenomenon known by solid state chemists as passivation, which in some cases can be overcome by ultrasonication. By chance, an ultrasonie bath was sitting on the next beneh, borrowed to clean some equipment. We clamped our reluctant reaction mixture into the bath, the reaction proceeded vigorously, and ... the adventure started. Without knowing anything about cavitation, high energies, ete., we had an illustration of Goethe's word "Am Anfang war die Tat" (at the Beginning was the Act).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The C-C bond is a basic building block in chemistry and its formation is often the first step towards building more complex molecules. The direct generation of C-C bonds from C-H by cross-dehydrogenative-coupling (CDC) reactions in 2003 has presented a paradigm shift towards more efficient synthetic design, and over the last decade this has become a hot topic in Green Chemistry. This edited book presents a summary of the latest developments in the formation of C-C bonds direct from two different C-H bonds via oxidative dehydrogenative couplings. The editor, (CJ Li, McGill University) has pioneered various copper and organo-catalyzed CDC reactions within his Green Chemistry and Organic Synthesis group, and has brought together expertise from across the world to present the various CDC reactions being used today. Practicing synthetic chemists seeking to improve the efficiency of their reactions will benefit from this approach, while students and those wishing to adopt these reactions will gain a thorough understanding of the field. The conclusions presented at the end of the book will inspire all readers to the future opportunities in the field.

Book excerpt: Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry Teaches students to solve problems in Organic Chemistry using methods of analysis that are valuable and portable to other fields Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry provides a unique decision-based approach that develops a chemical intuition based on a crosschecked analysis process. Assuming only a general background in chemistry, this acclaimed textbook teaches students how to write reasonable reaction mechanisms and use analytical tools to solve both simple and complex problems in organic chemistry. As in previous editions, the author breaks down challenging organic mechanisms into a limited number of core elemental mechanistic processes, the electron flow pathways, to explain all organic reactions—using flow charts as decision maps, energy surfaces as problem space maps, and correlation matrices to display all possible interactions. The third edition features entirely new chapters on crosschecking chemical reactions through good mechanistic thinking and solving spectral analysis problems using organic structure elucidation strategies. This edition also includes more biochemical reaction mechanism examples, additional exercises with answers, expanded discussion of how general chemistry concepts can show that structure determines reactivity, and new appendix covering transition metal organometallics. Emphasizing critical thinking rather than memorization to solve mechanistic problems, this popular textbook: Features new and expanded material throughout, including more flowcharts, correlation matrices, energy surfaces, and algorithms that illustrate key decision-making processes Provides examples from the field of biochemistry of relevance to students in chemistry, biology, and medicine Incorporates principles from computer science and artificial intelligence to teach decision-making processes Contains a general bibliography, quick-reference charts and tables, pathway summaries, a major decisions guide, and other helpful tools Offers material for instructors including a solutions manual, supplemental exercises with detailed answers for each chapter usable as an exam file, and additional online resources Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry: A Decision-Based Guide to Organic Mechanisms, Third Edition, is the perfect primary textbook for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate courses in organic reaction mechanisms, and an excellent supplement for graduate courses in physical organic chemistry, enzymatic reaction mechanisms, and biochemistry.
