Book excerpt: Now featuring scholarship published since the first edition, revised lists of recommended readings that include important books published since 1988, and appendices of rulers of Spain and Portugal, this lively, very readable history provides a concise yet comprehensive study of the Iberian colonies in the New World from the pre-conquest background through European exploration, conquest, and colonization, to the wars of independence in the early nineteenth century. As before, numerous photographs and maps lend immediacy to the narrative, and biographical examples of both conqueror and conquered illustrate colonial life. Clear and engaging, this extremely well-balanced book is invaluable for anyone who wants to learn about Latin America's colonial legacy and difficult transition into the modern era.

Download or read book The Absorption of Immigrants written by S N Eisenstadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Absorption of Immigrants (1954) examines the assimilation of immigrants in the Yishuv (the Jewish Community in Palestine) and in the State of Israel. It provides a historical analysis of the social structure of the Yishuv and of the development of the new Israeli society. The book also applies the general framework to the analysis of some main types of modern migrations and a series of tentative conclusions is given which may serve as detailed hypotheses for subsequent inquiries. In this way a comparative study of different types of migrations and absorption of immigrants is built up, and an objective evaluation can be made of the place of an Israeli Society among other communities, and their special ways of absorbing new immigrants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1976 volume originated in the mood of disillusion and despair which followed the Third United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Santiago in 1972. The prospects for cooperation between rich and poor nations seemed poor and new policies and instruments needed to considered if the interests of the rich and poor nations were not to become even more unbalanced in favour of the rich. The contributors to this volume consider what unexploited possibilities might be open to the less developed countries, both jointly and individually, in international affairs, which would generate a more equitable outcome. The issues addressed in these papers were, at the time of publication, of immediate relevance following the success of oil producing countries in revising prices, worldwide inflation, famine in the poorest countries, recession in industrial countries. Simultaneously, the less developed countries were declaring the need for a new international economic order, which this volume discusses.
