Book excerpt: This report discusses the development of new approaches for providing anti-jam, multipath resistant, multi-user communications based on filterbank and wavelet techniques. The first portion considers the synthesis of spreading waveforms using full binary tree multi-rate filterbank design techniques. Non-binary spreading waveforms are produced that are optimized for multi-user, multipath and interference channels and shown to out-perform some conventional spreading sequences. The second part of the report describes and evaluates a spread spectrum version of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wherein the same information is transmitted on multiple orthogonal carriers, creating both time and frequency diversity. In the receiver, time domain and transform domain excision are used to improve performance in pulsed wideband or narrowband jamming, respectively. In addition, the report considers replacing the inverse and forward FFT's commonly used in OFDM systems with inverse and forward Modulated Lapped Transforms (MLT's). Performance results demonstrate the effectiveness of the techniques. For both the spreading waveform design and OFDM work, simulations were performed using the Signal Processing WorkSystem (SPW) from AltaGroup of Cadence Design Systems, Inc.

A central purpose of this study is to gain sufficient scientific information and insight to enable the development of both representative and useful models of the superabundance of physical processes that surround us. The engineers need these models and the associated insight in order to build the information processing systems and control systems that comprise these new and emerging technologies. Much of the early modeling work that has been done on these systems has been based on the linear time-invariant system theory and its extensive use of Fourier transform theory for both continuous and discrete systems and signals. However many of the signals arising in nature and real systems are neither stationary nor linear but tend to be concentrated in both time and frequency. Hence a new methodology is needed to take these factors properly into account.

Book excerpt: The field of Digital Signal Processing has developed so fast in the last two decades that it can be found in the graduate and undergraduate programs of most universities. This development is related to the growing available techno logies for implementing digital signal processing algorithms. The tremendous growth of development in the digital signal processing area has turned some of its specialized areas into fields themselves. If accurate information of the signals to be processed is available, the designer can easily choose the most appropriate algorithm to process the signal. When dealing with signals whose statistical properties are unknown, fixed algorithms do not process these signals efficiently. The solution is to use an adaptive filter that automatically changes its characteristics by optimizing the internal parameters. The adaptive filtering algorithms are essential in many statistical signal processing applications. Although the field of adaptive signal processing has been subject of research for over three decades, it was in the eighties that a major growth occurred in research and applications. Two main reasons can be credited to this growth, the availability of implementation tools and the appearance of early textbooks exposing the subject in an organized form. Presently, there is still a lot of activities going on in the area of adaptive filtering. In spite of that, the theor etical development in the linear-adaptive-filtering area reached a maturity that justifies a text treating the various methods in a unified way, emphasizing the algorithms that work well in practical implementation.

The introduction covers the fundamentals of analysis-synthesis systems and signal representations. Some of the topics in the introduction include perfect and near-perfect reconstruction, the distinction between parametric and nonparametric methods, the role of compaction in signal modeling, basic and overcomplete signal expansions, and time-frequency resolution issues. These topics arise throughout the book as do a number of other topics such as filter banks and multiresolution. The second chapter gives a detailed development of the sinusoidal model as a parametric extension of the short-time Fourier transform. This leads to multiresolution sinusoidal modeling techniques in Chapter Three, where wavelet-like approaches are merged with the sinusoidal model to yield improved models. In Chapter Four, the analysis-synthesis residual is considered; for realistic synthesis, the residual must be separately modeled after coherent components (such as sinusoids) are removed. The residual modeling approach is based on psychoacoustically motivated nonuniform filter banks. Chapter Five deals with pitch-synchronous versions of both the wavelet and the Fourier transform; these allow for compact models of pseudo-periodic signals. Chapter Six discusses recent algorithms for deriving signal representations based on time-frequency atoms; primarily, the matching pursuit algorithm is reviewed and extended. The signal models discussed in the book are compact, adaptive, parametric, time-frequency representations that are useful for analysis, coding, modification, and synthesis of natural signals such as audio. The models are all interpreted as methods for decomposing a signal in terms of fundamental time-frequency atoms; these interpretations, as well as the adaptive and parametric natures of the models, serve to link the various methods dealt with in the text. Adaptive Signal Models: Theory, Algorithms and Audio Applications serves as an excellent reference for researchers of signal processing and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

The fourth chapter is concerned with some new and exciting results regarding the follower jammer paradigm. A counter-countermeasure technique is reviewed, notable for its counterintuitive characteristic which can be understood from a simple yet elegant game framework. The fifth chapter recounts some results pertaining to random coding for an optical spread spectrum link. The technique is based on laser speckle statistics and uses a coherent array of spatial light modulators at the transmitter but allows the receiver to be realized as a spatially distributed radiometric and therefore incoherent structure. The sixth and final chapter looks at an important and interesting application of spread spectrum to accurately locate a wideband, ‘bent pipe’, satellite transponder. It is, in a strong sense, an inverted GPS technique.
