Book excerpt: "Massive levels of integration following Moore's Law ushered in a paradigm shift in the way on-chip interconnections were designed. With higher and higher number of cores on the same die traditional bus based interconnections are no longer a scalable communication infrastructure. On-chip networks were proposed enabled a scalable plug-and-play mechanism for interconnecting hundreds of cores on the same chip. Wired interconnects between the cores in a traditional Network-on-Chip (NoC) system, becomes a bottleneck with increase in the number of cores thereby increasing the latency and energy to transmit signals over them. Hence, there has been many alternative emerging interconnect technologies proposed, namely, 3D, photonic and multi-band RF interconnects. Although they provide better connectivity, higher speed and higher bandwidth compared to wired interconnects; they also face challenges with heat dissipation and manufacturing difficulties. On-chip wireless interconnects is one other alternative proposed which doesn't need physical interconnection layout as data travels over the wireless medium. They are integrated into a hybrid NOC architecture consisting of both wired and wireless links, which provides higher bandwidth, lower latency, lesser area overhead and reduced energy dissipation in communication. However, as the bandwidth of the wireless channels is limited, an efficient media access control (MAC) scheme is required to enhance the utilization of the available bandwidth. This thesis proposes using a multiple access mechanism such as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to enable multiple transmitter-receiver pairs to send data over the wireless channel simultaneously. It will be shown that such a hybrid wireless NoC with an efficient CDMA based MAC protocol can significantly increase the performance of the system while lowering the energy dissipation in data transfer. In this work it is shown that the wireless NoC with the proposed CDMA based MAC protocol outperformed the wired counterparts and several other wireless architectures proposed in literature in terms of bandwidth and packet energy dissipation. Significant gains were observed in packet energy dissipation and bandwidth even with scaling the system to higher number of cores. Non-uniform traffic simulations showed that the proposed CDMA-WiNoC was consistent in bandwidth across all traffic patterns. It is also shown that the CDMA based MAC scheme does not introduce additional reliability concerns in data transfer over the on-chip wireless interconnects."--Abstract.

The need for spectrally efficient systems has motivated the development of adaptive transmission techniques. Enabling this adaptation requires protocols for information exchange as well as mathematical tools to optimize the controllable parameters. In this dissertation, we provide insights into such protocols and mathematical tools that target efficient utilization of the wireless spectrum. First, we propose a distributed CDMA-based medium access protocol for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Our approach accounts for multiple access interference at the protocol level, thereby addressing the notorious near-far problem that undermines the throughput performance in MANETs. Second, we present a novel power-controlled MAC protocol, called POWMAC, which enjoys the same single-channel, single-transceiver design of the IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc MAC protocol, but which achieves a significant throughput improvement over the 802.11 protocol. Third, we consider joint power/rate optimization in the context of orthogonal modulation (OM) and investigate the performance gains achieved through adaptation of the OM order using recently developed optimization techniques. We show that such adaptation can significantly increase network throughput while simultaneously reducing the per-bit energy consumption relative to fixed-order modulation systems. Finally, we determine the maximum achievable p̀̀erformance" of a wireless CDMA network that employs a conventional matched filter receiver and that operates under \emph{optimal} link-layer adaptation where each user individually achieves the Shannon capacity. The derived bounds serve as benchmarks against which adaptive CDMA systems can be compared.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Among different wireless technologies, wireless ad hoc networks and cellular networks account for a large part of wireless communications. In this work, we take an extensive study at the management of the two of very important resources in both wireless ad hoc networks and cellular networks: power and code (bandwidth). In the first part, we focus on the power management in IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks. We first aim at the mismatch between the power management protocol and the ever-increasing transfer rate. We propose modifications on the power management operations of IEEE 802.11 which introduce very little overhead but bring a big boost on the performance in both power efficiency and data throughput by combining a scheduling algorithm with the power management. Then, we concentrate on the new challenges faced by the power and synchronization protocols when pushing the IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode into the multi-hop environment. We study the relationship between clock synchronization and power management in Mobile Multi-hop Ad Hoc Network (MANET). After reaching the conclusion that clock synchronization is vital for not only efficient power management, but many other network operations as well, we present a protocol to generate a globally synchronous system from synchronized sub-networks. We discuss the correctness of the protocol, and show the power efficiency brought by such a synchronous system in simulations. Lastly, we present a framework, which takes advantage both of the two main approaches in energy conservation, i.e. power management and power control, to maximize power-saving. Because the goals that each scheme seeks contradict each other, we study the balance and the trade-off between them, and use them as the guideline on building our framework. In the second part of this work, we shift to the code (bandwidth) assignment for multimedia traffic in Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks. We propose several algorithms to handle the jitters of compressed video transmissions, and try to get a better playback quality while reducing the effects which video traffic has on other users in the system. Our simulations show the improved performance from those algorithms, especially at heavy traffic scenarios.

Such changes were mainly driven by the continuous emergence of innovative wireless communication services and products. These services and products represents a direct upshot of enduring research outcomes within the area. Nevertheless, the blessing of such innovation was accompanied by extremely high demands in forms of data traffic, per-user transmission rate, minimum transmission delay and in the number of wireless devices per unit area. Tackling these issues through cellular network densification was faced by many technical issues related to high interference levels, tedious user scheduling processes, and complicated network resource allocation algorithms. Trying to address these imperative technical issues in future wireless networks, this thesis develops several innovative enabling techniques for massive wireless multiple access. Specifically, we commence this work by introducing a new concept of partial spectrum overlapping among active users equipment (UEs). The proposed scheme represents a trade-off between fully orthogonal multiple access schemes (e.g. time division multiple access [TDMA], frequency division multiple access (FDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)) and that of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Second, we develop several innovative dynamic cell-free network architectures that support massive wireless connectivity through adaptive access points (APs)/base stations (BSs) coordination and/or cooperation. The proposed network models are then evaluated under different state-of-the-art enabling wireless techniques such as millimeter wave (mmWave) channel links and massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed architectures is investigated through the derivation of several closed-form expressions of exact and/or asymptotic performance metrics (example, probability of outage, asymptotic outage, instantaneous rate and outage-capacity). Finally, for practical control and monitoring of the proposed access techniques and network models, we develop several low-complexity deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based modeling frameworks that can efficiently learn the solution of several combinatorial optimization problems related to network partitioning (clustering) and uplink/downlink beamforming. This is achieved through innovative nested DRL designs that utilizes continuous and discrete deep neural networks (DNN) agents based on the nature of the problem. Several operating scenarios of the proposed techniques are evaluated through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations (Matlab and Python) with practical parameters and assumptions.
