Book excerpt: To recapitulate, Greeks differ from Independents and from the academy's value priorities, but for the most part these differences derive from antecedent charac teristics. Moreover, there are some grounds for speculating that these anteced ent differences reflect fundamental temperamental differences (extraversion and gregariousness mediated by social interaction, as opposed to interaction through ideas). Only to a limited degree does the Greek "system" appear to adversely affect the acquisition and assimilation of the academy's value priori ties; i.e., students as a whole, Greek and Independent alike, appear to become more independent, liberal, socially concerned, and culturally sophisticated by graduation. However, the Greek system's effect on the behavior of Greeks is more trou bling, an effect largely mediated by the use and abuse of alcohol and the relative absence of direct institutional supervision. Assuming the retention of the Greek system, then, the promotion of the acad emy's agenda appears dependent on (a) an understanding and accommodation of the personal characteristics of Greeks, using appropriate pedagogical meth ods to advance the academy's educational objectives, and (b) both educational and administrative/regulatory efforts to control the use and abuse of alcohol. With or without the Greek system, the advancement of the academy's agenda involves these considerations, since the characteristics of students as a whole encompass the characteristics emphasized among Greeks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few decades, many university presidents and provosts have expressed an intent to internationalize their institutions to equip students with the broad intellectual skills necessary to succeed in the global twenty-first century. But as various academic and professional studies have shown, these well-intentioned calls for internationalization have remained little more than rhetoric. Obstacles embedded in developing faculty engagement in internationalization are largely responsible for this inability to turn rhetoric into reality. This groundbreaking book identifies what successful institutions have done to overcome endogenous challenges and successfully engage faculty in the internationalization process. Examining two exemplary cases of internationalization, this book extrapolates strategies for colleges and universities to adapt to their unique institutional cultures, histories, and priorities, to support faculty in internationalizing their teaching, research, and service. In addition to in-depth analysis of each successful institution, the book analyzes cross-case findings and implications. This book presents a new conceptual model and typology of faculty engagement in internationalization that can be used both by university administrators to expand faculty involvement in the implementation of their institution's internationalization plans and by faculty to advance their knowledge of internationalization.

The authors clearly show how to implement a strategic plan that will meet the myriad challenges of today's complex higher education environment and spell success for the academy."It is amazing that while sports teams of colleges and universities meticulously plan their contests against their opponents, their institutions' administrators don't spend nearly enough time or effort in creating andimplementing a strategy. Institutions of higher education seem to be missing the requisite tools to develop and activate their 'play book.' With this new age of globally available real-time information, it becomes increasingly more essential to have a map to help go over and around obstacles, avoid the ever-present pitfalls, and effectively aid in selecting the best route.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Strategic Change in Colleges and Universities, the Rowley, Lujan, and Dolence show how the strategic planning process can lead to more constructive and effective change within the college and university environment. Solidly grounded in theory, this practical book builds on the authors' experience of successfully implementing an original strategic planning approach on a variety of campuses in the United States and Canada. This powerful model works well in the wide range of higher educational settings, provides a consistent framework that unifies all levels involved, and is effective in keeping diverse groups of decision-makers focused on the most important elements of the organization's success. The authors outline, step by step, a strategic planning process that is uniquely tailored to the needs of academic settings where multiple constituencies require a more collaborative planning approach than is used in corporations. Strategic Change in Colleges and Universities is filled with illustrative examples that clearly show how the authors' strategic planning principles, which they describe as a ?strategic planning engine,? work in practice. The book also discloses practical and realistic methods of navigating the political land mines that often obstruct the development of a strategic plan and its implementation. Offering clear directions on the many components of a successful implementation strategy, the authors show how to encourage communication, gain the backing of top leaders, and develop campuswide support. This collaborative model of strategic planning which (unlike other approaches used in academe) results in rather than starts from the institution's mission statement. Each campus applies the same principles, developing its own method of planning to match its institution's particular needs and characteristics.Strategic Change in Colleges and Universities is written for those charged with strategic planning--presidents, chancellors, vice presidents, Details a strategic planning approach that has proved effective in institutions across the country. The authors address the complex nature of stakeholders and conflicting purposes in an academic setting.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses the topic of managing with scarce resources. Contributions have been designed to assist those who direct institutional research, those engaged in planning the use of resources, and faculty leaders and higher education administrators both on campus and in broader higher education roles. Institutional researchers and strategic planners can survey the areas in which research is needed and consider how they can facilitate decision making by supplying information and analysis and indentifying options. Faculty leaders and administrators can benefit from the discussion of options that best further the basic objectives to be served in a period in which resources for higher education are particularly scarce.

Book excerpt: Strategic Choices for the Academy is filled with practical advice for developing strategic plans that will transform colleges and universities to meet the demands of today's (and tomorrow's) information age learner. Drawing on the strategic planning and management concepts, the authors reveal which innovative organizational structures, facilities, teaching approaches, reward systems, and delivery systems are most effective for providing education to this new segment of learners - those who come to learn in every stage of life and who may be increasingly reluctant to enroll in traditional campus settings. The book also presents a series of flexible models that can be adapted to the strategic direction and needs of individual institutions.
