Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Legality of a Jewish State, the author traces the diplomatic history that led to the partition of Palestine in 1948 and the creation of Israel as a state. He argues that the fate of Palestine was not determined on the basis of principle, but by the failure of legality. In focusing on the lawyer-diplomats who pressed for and against a Jewish state at the United Nations, he offers an explanation of the effort in 1947-48 by Arab states at the UN to gain a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice about partition and the declaration of a Jewish state. Their arguments at that time may surprise a twenty-first-century reader, touching on issues that are still at the heart of the contemporary conflict in the Middle East.

Book Synopsis A UN 'Legion' by : Stephen Kinloch Pichat
Download or read book A UN 'Legion' written by Stephen Kinloch Pichat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh examination of the origins, evolution and future of proposals for a UN 'Legion' - a permanent military force recruited, trained and deployed by the UN. This new book shows how this idea has grown, re-emerged and evolved in direct connection with the development of UN international military forces. The legionnaires have been seen as the future representatives of a modern constabulary, international police or humanitarian chivalry. They have also invariably evoked the idea of mercenaries and resurrected fears of supranational government and a 'world army'. Such a force has been unattainable when needed, not needed when attainable, revealing the deficiencies of the international system in the perspective of a particular task. The idea highlights the inadequacy of the means as compared to the objectives, and the limits of the UN's capacity to adapt itself to new challenges. This study examinmes how the project of a UN 'Legion' is conditional on the viability of the original Utopia, and vice versa. It also argues that the extreme polarization of the debate may reflect a tendency to negate the inherent contradictions of reality, reminding us of the historical dimension of the building of an international organization, a 'work in progress'.

Book Synopsis The Jerusalem Question and Its Resolution by : Rût Lapîdôt
Download or read book The Jerusalem Question and Its Resolution written by Rût Lapîdôt and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1994-05-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a universally accepted truism that Jerusalem is a unique city. It stirs up strong emotions among adherents of various religions as it is the centre of three religions, and it is subject of conflicting national aspirations of two peoples. The diverse attitudes and wishes associated with the city are expressed, inter alia, in certain documents. This collection is meant to present to the reader the most important of these documents. This, it is hoped, will help to understand the difficulties and may assist in the search for solutions. There may be differences of opinion over historical facts and the documents may be subject to differing interpretations. Convenient access to the relevant documents is a prerequisite for any attempt to understand the problem and seek solutions. The collection includes documents concerning the status of Jerusalem from the point of view of Israel's law and administration, as well as documents from the Arab world and from the international sphere. The editors have focused on official documents and in particular on those that have had a practical influence on the status of the city, or are likely to do so in the future. The collection will assist students and scholars who seek to understand the special status of Jerusalem, as well as politicians and diplomats who are responsible for ensuring its welfare and prosperity.

This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, when he was 80 years old, Leo Gross compiled 45 of his essays which had been published in scholarly journals and other collections from 1945 to 1984. The collection was published in two volumes by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and Transnational Publishers in 1984, with a Preface by Judge Stephen M. Schwebel of the International Court of Justice. The collection has been out of print for some time. In response to many requests, the Publishers have now decided to issue a shorter, one-volume collection, the selection from the 1984 books having been carried out by Professor Alfred P. Rubin, who occupied the office adjoining that of Leo Gross in the Fletcher School for no less than seventeen years. In his impressive and illuminating Introduction to this one-volume collection, Alfred Rubin pays tribute to his former colleague and points to a number of the most impressive features of the Gross essays. In discussing the criteria of his choice, he concludes: `Tough choices had to be made to present the reader with the widest and deepest selection of the works of a wide and deep mind. The bottom line was always the utility of the selection to the next generation of students of public international law and organization. '
