Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of the year 1798 and what followed immediately afterward are of great interest to students of history and prophecy. In this collection of primary and secondary documents compiled shortly thereafter, Brother Heiks has filled out the events surrounding the captivity of Pope Pius VI and the setting up of the Roman Republic through the eyes of those who participated in those events at the time. One can follow this course of events in intimate detail through the witness of those who favored such a change and those who did not. All of this makes the importance of those events much more clear and Brother Heiks is to be congratulated for bringing together these remarkable sources that provide so much detail in their witness. Readers will find that Heiks clarifies documentation and resolves all the best arguments brought against what he considers, and has presented as, correct interpretation. The author also includes the Source Books’ bibliographies, which are a great resource for any scholar, historian, or layperson doing research.

Book excerpt: In the Hebrew of the Old Testament the word tamid is used as an adverb, which modifies a verbal motion, to point out that the action goes on regularly, consistently or continually--daily at regular, repeated intervals. It is never used of an object or action in the most holy place, where the priest ministered only once a year. Nor is it ever used of pagan worship or the use of idols. It is used almost thirty times in connection with the tabernacle in the wilderness and the temple of Jerusalem--always referring to some action the priest carried out in its courtyard or in the holy place. The question, then, is what single word or phrase can encompass all of these regular priestly activities in both areas? The daily, which was followed once a year by the yearly or annual ministration in the Most Holy Place. Since these earthly functions were a typological model of what takes place in the heavenly sanctuary, its connection there shows that it belongs to the heavenly mediation and intercession of Christ on behalf of his earthly children. --William H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Gowan offers a unified reading of the prophetic books, showing that each has a distinctive contribution to make to a central theme. These books--Isaiah through Malachi--respond to three key moments in Israel's history: the end of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BCE, the end of the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE, and the beginning of the restoration from the Babylonian exile in 538 BCE. Gowan traces the theme of death and resurrection throughout these accounts, finding a symbolic message of particular significance to Christian interpreters of the Bible.

Book excerpt: Is God really out there? How can we know? Did God give us evidence that can’t be reasonably ignored? The only logical way to prove His existence is to use the evidence God gave us for that purpose. That is what we will explore in this book. As we go through this evidence, we will also see His plan, what He is doing now, what He is waiting for, why He is waiting, your part in the plan, how He will answer all your questions, and the ultimate end: a peaceful universe. Author Dan Tierney is confident that, if you honestly pursue the evidence that God has given, you will come to the solid conclusion that God is real. If it is the truth, it will all fit together and make sense. He also includes some helpful material about the origin of life and the physical evidence for a worldwide flood. Moses asked God what to tell the Israelites when they ask what His name is. God gave him the answer, “I AM has sent me to you,” Exodus 3:14. We also must believe that “He is,” Hebrews 11:6. Hence, the title of the book. What are you waiting for? Come now and let us reason together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group biography of seven enduring and beloved games, and the story of why—and how—we play them. Checkers, backgammon, chess, and Go. Poker, Scrabble, and bridge. These seven games, ancient and modern, fascinate millions of people worldwide. In Seven Games, Oliver Roeder charts their origins and historical importance, the delightful arcana of their rules, and the ways their design makes them pleasurable. Roeder introduces thrilling competitors, such as evangelical minister Marion Tinsley, who across forty years lost only three games of checkers; Shusai, the Master, the last Go champion of imperial Japan, defending tradition against “modern rationalism”; and an IBM engineer who created a backgammon program so capable at self-learning that NASA used it on the space shuttle. He delves into the history and lore of each game: backgammon boards in ancient Egypt, the Indian origins of chess, how certain shells from a particular beach in Japan make the finest white Go stones. Beyond the cultural and personal stories, Roeder explores why games, seemingly trivial pastimes, speak so deeply to the human soul. He introduces an early philosopher of games, the aptly named Bernard Suits, and visits an Oxford cosmologist who has perfected a computer that can effectively play bridge, a game as complicated as human language itself. Throughout, Roeder tells the compelling story of how humans, pursuing scientific glory and competitive advantage, have invented AI programs better than any human player, and what that means for the games—and for us. Funny, fascinating, and profound, Seven Games is a story of obsession, psychology, history, and how play makes us human.

Book excerpt: A quest for the source of power threatened to doom the land of Xanth As a ruler of a country steeped in enchantment, King Trent was naturally curious about the source of its magic. It made sense to order Bink, the only one of his subjects immune to supernatural harm, to undertake a quest to discover the wellspring of Xanth’s uniqueness. From the beginning, Bink and his companions, Chester the centaur and Crombie, the soldier transformed into a griffin, were harried by an unseen enemy determined to thwart them. Even the power of Good Magician Humfrey, together with Bink’s protective talent, scarcely saved their lives. Then when Humfrey and Crombie turned against him, all seemed lost. But Bink's ingenuity and luck prevailed, and he reached his goal. The King’s orders had been carried out . . . But the King had not expected Bink’s next act—to destroy utterly the magic of Xanth!
