Book excerpt: This informative text provides an introduction to schizophrenia and a review of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments being used in treating both schizophrenia and other mental diseases. Rather than focusing on how to carry out acupuncture and TCM, it examines the best way to apply treatments. Covering both the Western biomedical diagnosis and the essentials of Chinese differential diagnosis, treatment protocols are provided for each condition. A controversial text whose basic message is that TCM has much to offer for the future of psychiatric medicine.

This book was released on 2012-10-13 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is one of the leading killers in the world and the incidence is increasing, but most cancer patients and cancer survivors suffer much from the disease and its conventional treatments’ side effects. In the past, clinical data showed that some complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) possessed anticancer abilities, but some clinicians and scientists have queried about the scientific validity of CAM due to the lack of scientific evidence. There is great demand in narrowing the knowledge gap to explore the scientific and evidence-based knowledge of CAM in the anticancer field. With this aim, an unparalleled undertaking of a book series is launched to structurally consolidate this area. Although acupuncture and moxibustion have been practiced for millennia, they have come under scientific investigation only recently. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been used clinically to treat cancer-related symptoms (e.g. cancer pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia), manage treatment-induced side effects (e.g. hot flashes, nausea and vomiting) and enhance immunity (e.g. blood cell count, lymphocyte and natural killer cell activity). This is the first book manages to provide comprehensive and updated scientific evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion intervention for cancer care. Laboratory and animal studies have uncovered the mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion for cancer therapy. Promising results of most clinical trials show the efficacy and safety of acupuncture and moxibustion in cancer management. This book consists of fifteen chapters which address a range of important aspects that will impact on the application of acupuncture and moxibustion. An overview of the safety and side effects of acupuncture and moxibustion for cancer care are also covered. In addition, the integration of acupuncture with Western medicine in cancer treatment and recent clinical trials are included as well. Opinion leaders around the world have teamed up to pursue a thorough and up-to-date review of the area, this volume will contribute great to the cancer, clinical and academic community by providing evidence-based information on the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion as an anticancer therapy.

Book excerpt: In Acupuncture and Moxibustion, acupoints are expounded comprehensively in aspects of their indications, theoretical bases of their use, present clinical applications and modern experimental study. Although there are 361 channel points, the commonly used ones in clinical treatment are less than half. Therefor, only the most frequently used points are selected. Analysis of functionally analogues points is presented as one section. This part attempts to clarify the main differences between acupoints for beginners. In addition, paring points and point distinction are discussed. Achievements of modern study of channels, cholaterals and acupoints are introduced respectively. These parts help readers get a deeper understanding of acupuncture. In order to facilitate study for Western readers, the treatment is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Identification while the diseases' names are taken from Western medicine. On the basis of introducing the fundamental acupuncture theory, much effort has been made to clearly explain some difficult and key points. Therefor, the book can be taken as a textbook for beginners as well as a reference book for those with a certain level of Traditional Chinese Medicine knowledge. Since practicality is the basic purpose in compiling this book and clinical applications are explained in details, the book will be very useful for all clinical medical workers. Pinyin-Chinese indexes of technical terms, acupoint names and source text are included for easy reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American Consortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Preparatory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM edu- tion within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Sh- dong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Book excerpt: These proceedings showcase the best papers selected from more than 500 submissions, and introduce readers to the latest research topics and developmental trends in the theory and application of MMESE. The integrated research topic Man–Machine–Environment System Engineering (MMESE) was first established in China by Professor Shengzhao Long in 1981, with direct support from one of the greatest modern Chinese scientists, Xuesen Qian. In a letter to Long from October 22nd, 1993, Qian wrote: “You have created a very important modern science and technology in China!” MMESE studies the optimum combination of man–machine–environment systems. In this system, “man” refers to the people in the workplace (e.g. operators, decision-makers); “machine” is the general name for any object controlled by man (including tools, machinery, computers, systems and technologies), and “environment” describes the specific working conditions under which man and machine interact (e.g. temperature, noise, vibration, hazardous gases, etc.). The three main goals of optimizing man–machine–environment systems are to ensure safety, efficiency and economy. These proceedings present interdisciplinary studies on concepts and methods from physiology, psychology, system engineering, computer science, environmental science, management, education, and other related disciplines. They offer a valuable resource for all researchers and professionals whose work involves interdisciplinary areas touching on MMESE subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is moxibustion too difficult to apply, too risky or too smoky? Discover the effective new moxa method from Japan that gets rapid results - safely. Moxibustion is ancient. Even more ancient than needling. In modern acupuncture, however, it is often considered too time-consuming or difficult to master. And yet the classics say: for chronic conditions, moxa has no equal. Coming to the rescue of time-poor, present-day acupuncturists is the Ontake Method from Japan. This innovative technique uses a piece of bamboo filled with burning moxa wool to roll, tap and press on the acupuncture meridians using a metronome programmed to each meridian's frequency. The rhythmic application of heat, frequency and pressure triggers rapid shifts in your patients' body condition and mood but this method generates only a little smoke. In this book, you will learn: Dr Manaka's meridian frequencies and how to apply them Branch treatments for symptom relief Root treatments for whole-body regulation The integration of Dr Tan's holographic models with Ontake for the rapid relief of pain in the neck, back and joints Moxa in Motion presents a step-by-step guide to clinical practice utilising the Ontake Method. Easily integrated into any style of acupuncture, Shiatsu or Tuina, the Ontake Method will boost your results and build your practice. Oran Kivity is a veteran acupuncturist from the UK, living in Asia. He has dedicated countless hours of clinical observation and study to integrate the knowledge of contemporary Japanese masters. Through writing and teaching, he has ignited interest in Ontake, a remarkable new moxa tool from Japan, developing these dynamic new techniques further and compiling them into this practical handbook of moxibustion.
