The report of the treasurer presents the fact, that, including a bequest of $500 of Gerard Beekman, and a balance from last year, the income exceeds the expenditure by $104 29; but excluding these, the actual income falls below the expense in the sum of 9967 71. American Board, Ainoy was first visited by the ever to be loved and honored David Abeel. His visit there was soon followed by the regular establishment of a Mission, consisting of Ministers of the Reformed Dutch Church with their families. Of the successive and individual laborers in that field we need not speak, but of their aggregate work it is not too much to say, that it has been characterized by a truly apostolic zeal, perseverance, energy, and success. The Missionaries there have endeared their names to the whole Christian world, and especially to that Household of Faith of which they are loved and honored members. They hare never been forgotten in our prayers, nor in our thanksgivings, nor in the distribution of our pious gifts. No words at our command can tell what fond and flaming sympathies have overleaped broad oceans and bound them and us together. "Words, like nature, half reveal And half conceal the soul within." And so it must be left to the blessed intimacies of that communion, which the mercy seat secures and hallows, to disclose how much and how well the Church and her faithful Missionaries at Amoy have loved and trusted each other. Years have augmented their mutual confidence, while the labor of faith, on one hand, and the generous gifts of gratified expectation, on the other, have bound them together in tics which, it is hoped, nothing will be allowed to sunder. In the year 1857 the Seneral Synod, with a unanimity which seemed to have been inspired by an immediate divine influence, resolved in future to conduct its own Foreign Missionary work separate from that of the American Board.
