This book was released on 1984 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in composite materials and active control principles have lead to renewed interest in the Forward Swept Wing (FSW) as a feasible aircraft design alternative. Sweeping a wing forward results in low static divergence speeds and additional aeroelastic instabilities which must be adequately controlled for an aircraft employing this wing design to have an acceptable flight envelope. This thesis seeks to demonstrate the utility of applying active feedback control principles to suppress aeroelastic instabilities associated with a FSW design. Analytical studies investigate the potential of applying optimal control theory techniques to synthesis of active flutter suppression control laws. For an example application, a FSW/fuselage model previously analyzed by Thomas Noll of AFFDL was used. Through use of Pade approximants to represent unsteady aerodynamic forces, the equations of motion are written in standard state space form. Linear optimal regulator theory is then applied to determine particular sets of gains which minimize a quadratic cost function in terms of the states and controls. Control laws are developed at a design flight condition which increases the onset of the lowest instability speed 20% above the wing bending/torsion instability speed. The optimal control law is then applied at off-design flight conditions to assess the robustness of the optimal regulator. Program listings are included.

Honlinger and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive research programs have been conducted at MBB and at AFWAL to investigate the application of active controls for the suppression of wing/store flutter. A flutter suppression system was developed and flight tested on an F-4F aircraft. The control law was designed by MBB using optimal control theory to minimize the control surface motion and to provide the required stability margins. During the test it was found that the dynamic behavior of the wing-pylon-store changed considerably with excitation amplitude due to free play and preload. The active flutter suppression system worked well and provided an increase in flutter speed. (Author).

This book was released on 1975 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study to utilize the recent advances in structural dynamic analysis, unsteady-aerodynamic theories, control theories and optimization techniques in the design and analysis of flutter suppression systems was conducted. At the present time the best formulation of the problem is still open to question, therefore, the formulations that appear most promising for design study applications are presented. One class of formulation presented is more suitable to a parameter optimization design approach in the frequency domain while the second is more suitable to optimal control design techniques. Some of the inherent difficulties associated with casting the problem in the optimal control form are illustrated.
