Book excerpt: "This action plan addresses the entire set of populations of Blue, Fin, Sei and North Pacific Right Whales (Balaenoptera musculus, B. physalus, B. borealis, and Eubalaena japonica) in Canadian Pacific waters. It identifies recovery measures to implement the broad goals and objectives outlined in the Recovery Strategy for Blue, Fin and Sei Whales in Pacific Canadian Waters (Gregr et al. 2006), and the Recovery Strategy for North Pacific Right Whales (DFO 2011). All four species are being considered together because of their similar geographic distribution, common threats to survival, and the efficiency of integrating activities and resources required for recovery. It is considered an action plan because current best available information is insufficient to identify critical habitat (DFO 2012). When sufficient information allows, critical habitat will be identified for one or more of the species in a later iteration of the action plan or an amended recovery strategy"--Executive summary, p. iii.

Book excerpt: Hardly a day goes by without news of the extinction or endangerment of yet another animal species, followed by urgent but largely unheeded calls for action. An eloquent denunciation of the failures of Canada's government and society to protect wildlife from human exploitation, Max Foran's The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife argues that a root cause of wildlife depletions and habitat loss is the culturally ingrained beliefs that underpin management practices and policies. Tracing the evolution of the highly contestable assumptions that define the human–wildlife relationship, Foran stresses the price wild animals pay for human self-interest. Using several examples of government oversight at the federal, provincial, and territorial levels, from the Species at Risk Act to the Biodiversity Strategy, Protected Areas Network, and provincial management plans, this volume shows that wildlife policies are as much – or more – about human needs, priorities, and profit as they are about preservation. Challenging established concepts including ecological integrity, adaptive management, sport hunting as conservation, and the flawed belief that wildlife is a renewable resource, the author compels us to recognize animals as sentient individuals and as integral components of complex ecological systems. A passionate critique of contemporary wildlife policy, The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife calls for belief-change as the best hope for an ecologically healthy, wildlife-rich Canada.

Book excerpt: COSEWIC Status Appraisal Summary on the North Pacific Right Whale Eubalaena japonica in Canada ENDANGERED 2015 COSEWIC status appraisal summaries are working documents used in assigning the status of wildlife species suspected of being at risk in Canada. [...] The numbers in the eastern North Pacific are extremely low, with estimates of fewer than 50 individuals in the southeastern Bering Sea, the only known area of regular occurrence of this population. [...] Sightings of Right Whales in the Gulf of Alaska are far fewer in number than in the Bering Sea, but there has been relatively little survey effort in the Gulf, notably in offshore waters where the species was historically widely distributed (Brownell et al. [...] Sightings of North Pacific Right Whales in the northeastern Pacific south of the Gulf of Alaska are extremely rare. [...] The nature and severity of these threats in the Canadian Pacific are unlikely to have diminished and in some cases may be increasing.

Book excerpt: "The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) has developed criteria to evaluate reports of human-caused injury and mortality to large whales. The criteria minimize the identification of false positive human-caused mortalities and serious injuries and provide a minimum value of human impact to whale stocks. Serious injury is defined as an injury that is likely to lead to death. This report describes determinations made for reports received from 2005 - 2009 involving North Atlantic right (Eubalaena glacialis), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae), fin (Balaenoptera physalus), sei (B. borealis), blue (B. musculus), minke (B. acutorostrata), and Bryde's (B. edeni) whales observed along coastal Gulf of Mexico and the eastern seaboard of the United States and adjacent Canadian Maritimes. A total of 496 unique large whale events were verified during the period, of which 252 (51%) involved human interactions, 20 (4%) did not involve a human interaction, and for 224 (45%) of the events it was unknown if a human interaction occurred. Of the events involving human interactions, we confirmed 193 unique entanglements and 63 ship strikes. Four events had evidence of both entanglement and ship strike, and are included in the totals for both these event categories. Eighteen (9%) of the entanglements and 28 (44%) of the ship strikes were fatal. Serious injury was sustained in 22 (11%) of the entanglement events and in 2 (3%) of the confirmed ship strikes. Serious injury was prevented due to disentanglement efforts in 30 (16%) entanglement events. Forty-one (21%) of the entanglements and 11 (17%) of the ship strike events did not have adequate documentation to determine if serious injury occurred. Seventy-eight (40%) of the entanglement events and 18 (29%) of the ship strike events were determined to have not caused serious injury or death. We also confirmed a total of 308 mortalities: 46 (15%) due to human interaction, 16 (5%) due to natural causes and 246 (80%) which lacked sufficient evidence to determine cause of death. Minke whales had the greatest number of entanglement mortalities (n=7); humpback whales had the highest number of serious injury events resulting from entanglements (n=12); fin whales had the greatest number of ship strike mortalities (n=9); and right whales had the only serious injuries (n=2) from ship strikes. These mortality and serious injury numbers are minimum counts because of poor detection probabilities and inadequate documentation for the majority of events. Thus, the true level of human impact to these stocks is assumed to be greater than that reported here; the amount greater is unknown"--Abstract.

We confirmed 188 unique entanglement, 57 ship strike, and 330 mortality events. Twenty-four (13%) of the entanglements and 30 (53%) of the ship strikes were fatal. Serious injury was sustained in 18 (10%) of the entanglement events and in 2 (4%) of the confirmed ship strikes. Thirty-three (18%) of the entanglements and six (11%) of the ship strike events did not have adequate documentation to determine if serious injury occurred. Seventy-nine (42%) of the entanglement events and 15 (26%) of the ship strike events were determined to have not caused serious injury or death. Minke whales had the greatest number of entanglement mortalities (n=11); humpback whales had the highest number of serious injury events resulting from entanglements (n=11); fin whales had the greatest number of ship strike mortalities (n=10); and right whales had the only serious injuries (n=2) from ship strikes. These mortality and serious injury numbers are minimum counts because of poor detection probabilities and inadequate documentation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, making it an ideal and abundant resource for studying species diversity, faunal communities, and ecosystems. India’s massive coastline (5,044 miles) means it plays a major role in housing these faunal communities. Of the 32 animal phyla, 15 are represented in India’s marine ecosystem, covering more than 15,000 species. Marine and coastal ecosystems of India provide supporting services in the form of wide range of habitats. Major ecosystems such as estuaries, mangroves, coral reefs, lagoons, seaweeds and sea grasses serve as nurseries for both inshore and offshore fishes and others, many of which are supposed to be commercially exploited. Marine Faunal Diversity in India describes different marine faunal group ranges from sponges, corals, mollusks, crabs, fishes, reptiles, birds, marine mammals, mangrove fauna and tsunami impact on marine faunal diversity. The chapters, written by reputed experts in their respective fields, illustrate diversity and distribution of marine faunal communities. Key aspects of the ecology and conservation of this important ecosystem are also discussed. Marine Faunal Diversity in India provides marine biologists and related researchers with access to the latest research and field studies from this major region. Provides the latest field research on marine faunal diversity throughout the vast and species-rich Indian region Brings together expertise from top marine biology researchers in the country Covers a diverse array of aquatic environments, including coastal and island areas Discusses conservation ecology of marine faunal groups
